Evan Mathis Visiting Seattle

There's no doubt in my mind that the Colts know Mathis' asking price, and have considered him as an option.

I think it's a matter of three factors: 1) he's 33; 2) he wants at least $5.5m/year (based on reports); 3) he's predominantly a zone blocking guard, and the Colts run a power/man blocking scheme.

Maybe you can reconcile two of those three factors, but his salary demands are the primary reason that no one has signed him so far.

You are spot on with the ZBS fit - Kubiak runs that and that's where he is.

Todd Herremans was on that same team with that exact same zone blocking scheme. He is here now......Mathis would have been more then just fine because he is a technically sound O Lineman. Something we don't have a lot of among our starting unit. With that said I never thought getting Mathis was realistic primarily because I think Grigson and company are content to go with what we have

Herremans signed for minimal money to be a placeholder. Mathis wanted 'I'm gonna be great and deserve to be paid as such' money. The "discounted" contract he got from the Broncos is still twice as much as what we gave Herremans. If you're going to give a guy that kind of money, you should feel confident that he's a good scheme fit.

If Evan Mathis was the best guard in football, he wouldn't be currently unemployed

Yeah, Rick Venturi didn't seem to think highly of him like many fans do on this board. On JMV 1070 the fan, Venturi said he is a player who thinks he's worth more than he is. A solid player, but he didn't think it would've made some ridiculous ungodly impact to the OL. Even though he wasn't a great coach, I'll trust his 30 years of experience vs most on the forum.

    • Time for this weeks prediction. I'm 1-1 thus far. I really didn't think we could conceivably lose to a qb who had only thrown 6 career passes heading into last Sundays game, but as they say."on any given Sunday the Irsay's can lose to any inferior opponent while making a journeyman qb look like an all-pro"(I paraphrased that a little, but it is historically accurate). So, onto todays game, facing a rookie qb making just his 3rd nfl. start, 4 fewer than ours, so that really balances out. If we use the offensive game plan against the Bears that we used against the Texans and mix in some deep throws we will shut up the yapping Bears defense and win. If we use the pedestrian, bland offensive game plan we used against the Packers we will lose. I am going to flip a coin, hold on-------------the coin says we will win! So I'll go with the win today. Game time at 1 o'clock, go Colts!!!!
    • I watched a Mike Tyson documentary last night, what stood out was Tyson ALWAYS took the fight to the opponent, he NEVER sat back and waited for his opponent to attack him. Maybe Gus and the Colt defense should take note of that. Against the Texans we attacked down field, the Packer game we threw ONE pass over 50 yards(last play of the game). Disappointing thus far, but onto to the Bears.
    • Where is Davis at? Also why is Grover not playing nose instead? This makes no sense to me.
    • You?    Disagree with me?!?    Gee, that only happens 24/7/365.   🙄
    • It's easy for other people to say for someone else to walk away from like $160 million guaranteed. We know your health, especially mental, is more important than money. But generation wealth & financial security for your self and family is hard to turn your back to
