Scouting Report Rock Ya Sin, Parris Campbell

Here is Chris Landry's pre draft quick hit scouting report on Rock Ya Sin and Parris Campbell-

Quick scouting report on 2 of the Colts draft choices (Pre draft from a real paid scout)-

 

Rock Ya Sin ( #32 )

 

Good size, speed, toughness, ball skills, really quick feet playing in off coverage. Very fluid when he turns and opens up. No wasted step on his plant drive, closes in a hurry. On press coverage, he needs to do a better job using his hands. Occasionally gets turned around by shiftier wideouts. Has speed to recover when out of position, plays the ball in the air well.

 

Aggressive in run support, reliable tackler in space. His competitiveness and athleticism is outstanding, and makes him a potential starter in the NFL. Plays with greater length than his 5'11" measurement. That combined with his quickness, suddenness, and loose hips allows him to stay low in his peddle and close very quickly in off coverage. Needs to add strength and improve in fighting in run support.

 

Plays mostly off man coverage, and is very good in that technique. Not a great tackler/wrapper, but can really cover, inside and outside and can a really good player at the next level. Grade at #32, so he's predicted to be taken late 1st round or very early second round.

Parris Campbell  ( #62 )

 

Reminds of Jeremy Maclin, fluid receiver, kick returner, difference make with his speed, change of direction, ability after the catch.  Very good size, long arms, good athlete, strong hands, good route runner. Can separate quickly, good runner after the catch, fast and elusive. Not a very good blocker, limited route tree (as is case most of the time) and can have some 'concentration drops'.  But a very productive inside from the slot with bubble screens, crossing routes, hitches, some seam routes etc.   Has quick cutting ability, good burst and run instincts. He was a high school RB, and track guy. Can turn a short catch into a long gain.

 

He has outside versatility as well. He has really good value here in the second round, may be even higher in round 2 after his workout numbers. This guy is going to be a better player. Right now looking at him (routes,production, running) you wouldn't have him this high. But this is where scouting comes in. You see the ability he has, you see what he can be, With_Development, where 2 years from now folks may say why wasn't this guy taken in the first round?

 

He has to improve his physicality at the catch point, and become more productive as a downfield receiver. (I assume increase his route tree)  Right now he's mid to late second grade.

Good stuff, thanks. I'm extremely happy with both picks. Every analyst I hear mention Rock does so oozing about him as a player, and talks about what a great pick it was. I think he was the top CB on many boards. Parris is an excellent addition to the offense, with the additions of Funchess and Campbell, and hopefully Cain, with what was already in place, they're looking pretty explosive!

He only listed so many (130 or so) and I do not think they made it that list.  If he does publish or podcast them now that we're in later rounds of the draft, I'll share.

 

Remember, this is a grade of ALL players pre draft, with no regard to Character, Scheme, medical, and other factors.  If adjusted to teams, I'll bet the list gets trimmed to less than 80, and of those <80, it would be a completely different grouping for every team.

He likes a lot, but for different reasons, for different schemes/teams.  I had published an earlier list of his top 148 for the Colts Fan Forum mock drafts.  Pick a name out of there and I'll bet there's a good chance I can get a quick scouting snippet on the guy.

Working outside in-

 

"Benny Snell  (#147)

 

Powerful inside runner, moves piles, can be his own blocker, good vision. Runs with good lean, willing pass blocker. Good hands, durable, very average speed. Does not have ideal quickness or route pattern recognition is pass game, but can work the check downs. Complementary rotation back with a chance to make a team.

 

Deionte Thompson ( #52 )

 

Nice size, length, like his athletic ability, his speed, his range. Instinctive, reminds of Eddie Jackson (Bears?)  Really good in zone, solid job in man. Stays low in his peddle, smooth transition and turns. Closes quickly with good ball reactions. Good hands, good catch radius, good run support. Good tackler, sheds well.  More of a hitter than tackler right now (improvement). Plays about 4.5, only 1 year starter, but less worrisome with Alabama kids.

 

Needs to add a little bulk without losing speed/athleticism. Aware, instinctive with good ball skills. Better suited for Free Safety, and not overly polished, for now. If he went back to Alabama 1 more year, he might be top 15 next year, but he came out. So you can get a next years top 15 guy on your roster now, and develop him in a pro setting.

Good size, like his speed, like his feet, he's sudden. Asked to play a lot of man coverage, played it pretty well. Pretty instictive, anticipates well, pretty good in run support, takes on and sheds blocks. Sure tackler, good zone player. plays a little soft, a cushion, in off coverage because he doesn't turn or cover quite as well. Has instincts, range, and ball skills to play deep. Can play man cover against bigger guys in Nickel. But is more of an off guy then press guy. Aggressive, run supporter with deep safety ability.  Very good on the inside, and a good value in the late second or 3rd round.

 

Renell Wren  ( #123 )

 

Like his size, frame can be a 320 lb guy, quick off the ball, showed some explosiveness to get push and disruption in the run game. Aggressive player, good motor. Instincts are average, loses track of the ball. Not a pass rusher, has poor hand use. Doesn't shed quickly, lacks speed, not a top pursuit player.

Run stuffer that could make more plays if he had better instincts.  Has some bull rush push, but that's about it. Not starter caliber, but can be a quality early down rotational player. Lack of instincts a concern. Some value in round 4 if only because of his run defense (second round level), but a player needs more and there is ceilings to his game.
