This level of cold hurts the game

What difference does it make that the season wasn't this long back when the sport was invented?

The NFL has been around for what,  75 years?     Longer?

I started following football in the mid-60's and while the regular season ended in mid/late December, the playoffs went right through January with the Super Bowl typically in Mid and then Late January.

There were frozen playoff games in places like Green Bay,  Minnesota,  Chicago,  Cincinnati,  Cleveland, Buffalo,  you name it.

This has been going on for 50 years.....      who cares what football was like before then?

I appreciate that the quality of football sucks in terrible weather.    And it was worse back in the 60's, 70's and 80's because the ability to keep players warm was much less understood,  so players really suffered back in the day.      It was much worse back then than it is now because the technology exists to keep players warmer for longer period of time.     Gloves,  thermal clothing,  turtle neck sweaters,  caps for heads....   heated benches when they come to the sidelines and heavy/long coats to shield players from the elements.

Players have it much better today than they did 30-60 years ago.....

Just agree with me.....

All good points. I remember that frigid Cincinnati playoff game. It was a good one. That's when Collings worth was playing. Forget who won tho.

Here's a unique comparison.....

The Indianapolis 500 is run every Memorial Day weekend. It is run whether it's 100 degrees out or 55. There is a minimum safe temperature for the safety of the race, around 50 degrees ambient temp...so the tires will have grip. On race day, 300,000 fans pack the place. If it's hot, lots end up at the first aid stations with heat related issues. But they still come. The racing is also affected by temperature. Hotter means less grip on the track and affects race strategy. Same goes for cooler days. In 1992 it was barely 50 degrees and the race was marred with lots of crashes bc of the cold (tires couldn't heat up to get grip) They won't run in the rain, but as soon as it dries the cars are back out there. And on road courses they do run in the rain.

My point is this. The 500 has been run for over 100 years. They don't have a "window" of acceptable weather except for the minimum temperature for the drivers' safety. It can be hot as Hades and they'll run. The fans know it too. Lots of people ignore the warnings and end up in the hospital  (drinking and heat don't mix). But the show goes on. Only a downpour will stop it....and that's bc racing at 230 mph is a bit different than football.

Cold is part of football. Always has been, always will be.

Cincy won.....    but many thought San Diego,  the team that lost,  was the better team.     They just couldn't play in such frigid weather....

Ah thanks. That does ring a bell the loser was the better team.

A good number of NFL people called that Chargers offense of that year the greatest offense in the history of the league.

QB - Dan Fouts

WR - John Jefferson

WR - Charlie Joiner

TE -  Kellen Winslow

RB -  Chuck Muncie

RB2 -  either James Brooks, or Lionel Little Train James.

And they had a great offensive line as well.

They just had a very poor defense.

This was the original "Air Coryell"....   and they were a sight to behold!

yes that was a super team that should have gone all the way. They just had bad luck I didn't focus on their defense so they were bad eh.. I remember that game in Miami they lost (playoff game I think) and I was rooting for them like crazy.

They've been trying to get back there ever since.

Actually,  if my memory is still working,  San Diego won that game.     They won it on a FG in overtime.

Not sure if that took them to the game in Cincinnati where they ultimately lost,  or if in another year,  they went back home and played the Raiders where their defense let them down again and Oakland won and went on to a Super Bowl.

Forgive me,  too late to looking things up.     Nearly 3am here in So. Cal.     I have to crawl into bed and collapse.

But that Chargers -- Dolphins playoff game decided in overtime is one of the greatest games in NFL history!

Cincy had defeated the Chargers 40-17 earlier in the same season. It was even a San Diego home game in good weather. So much for the "many" who thought that the Chargers were the better team and only lost because of the cold weather. Perhaps the "many" were delusional. Was Skip Bayless one of the "many"? ;-)

BTW, Kellen Winslow still suffers from an aching toe due to frostbite from that game. Ken Anderson suffered a frostbitten ear and now is extremely cold sensitive/intolerant. I was at the game and spent much of the time in the concession area jogging in place to try and get my numb feet warmed up. That was despite placing a pile of newspapers between my insulated boots and the cold concrete as recommended by the newspaper.

    • How bout this? Draft better and u build a play off caliber team. Ain't rocket science.
    • Look im not gonna say Ballard haven't had his own issues, but the guy has been put in an impossible position particularly every year.   2017 - He has a lame duck for a head coach when we all knew was gonna get fired and was drafting for his scheme so I'll give him a pass.   2018 - Arguably his best draft getting two All-pros and a stalwart at RT. He gets to sign his choice of a head coach and is left at the alter at the 11th hour which in hindsight was a blessing in disguise. Drafted Tyquan Lewis, Hines, and Franklin who all have or had great years here. Andrew Luck was back and playing like an MVP.   2019 - Horrible draft. No excuses. It was his worst draft as a GM, but he did find a gem in Speed. Luck retiring a week before the season starts would put any GM in a tough spot so once again I'll give him a pass.   2020 - His second best draft getting Pittman, Taylor, and Blackmon. Signed Rivers and traded for Buckner and won 11 games. Unfortunately lost to the Bills in the playoffs.   2021 - I honestly can't tell for certain what happened in terms of QB. Ive heard Rivers was supposed to re-sign, but choice to retire. I've heard he was pushed to retirement as the colts wanted to go in a different direction. I heard Reich pushed hard for Wentz saying he can fix him against the wishes of Ballard. Whatever it was, Wentz was the guy and the QB carousal was supposedly stopped at least we thought. A god-like season for Taylor was not enough to save Wentz from ultimately being traded and you can chalk that one on whomever Reich or Ballard depending on what story you want to believe. In terms of the draft, Paye and Dayo have been reliable players on the dline, Granson you can make an argument is our best TE, and Fries came into his own last year.   2022 - Just an overall disaster of a season. Went the bandage route again at QB trading for Matt Ryan and you can say the colts did him no favors in terms of oline protection and JT getting hurt, but that was a failed trade for a miserable season. 2022 draft is still under elevation, but Pierce and Woods did show potential as rookies and Raimann looks to be the LT of the future.   2023 - Ballard finally gets to draft a QB to tether him to and Richardson plays a grand total of 12 quarters. It just seems like Ballard can not catch a break when it comes to QBs, but from I've seen from Richardson, I have very high expectations.
    • Hi Colts fans,   Yeah, I know, I know.  I was just as surprised as you were.  No clue why my good friend Jim Irsay would call me up and offer me the head coaching job.  I had to remind him.  Dude, I said, you do know that I've never coached at all at the NFL level.  Not coordinator.  Not even position coach.  Nothing.  It didn't seem to matter.  It was as if all that was required was for me to be good friends with the owner, and -- bazinga! -- I could be a head coach.   It was awkward, you know.  That first coaches meeting.  There was Gus Bradley.  And there was John Fox.  Both of them had been head coaches.  Heck, both of them had coached in a Super Bowl!  Yet here I was, promoted to be their boss, having never coached before.  Ever.   But, you know, Bud Grant did it.  So, why not?  Remember, I have a way of doing things.   Ok, sorry, I couldn't help but giggle.  I have a way of doing... what, exactly?  Things?  Things like coaching?  I have a way of coaching?  And how did I develop that way?  By actually, you know, coaching?   Anyway, I'm glad you have a new head coach.  One who has actually coached before.  And his experience doing that is bearing fruit.  I'm just glad I'm already in the Ring of Honor.  Because after what happened, I doubt that I would ever be accepted in by the fans, regardless of how I was as a player.  Heck, they would have put Andrew Luck in before they would even consider me.   In the meantime, I'm back at ESPN, attempting to "un-burn" bridges.  It can happen.  I heard Bud Grant did that once....   Regards, Jeff Saturday
    • We certainly have options as both DB draftees started at FS as well as CB in college. Perhaps Thomas ‘could’ revert back to CB as well?
    • Here's to hoping Colts hit the jackpot and everyone looks back saying wow he was definitely the best wr in that draft...
