This Is Not About Bill But Chris

From my point of view this entire firing is not about firing Bill Polian, the father and the ultimate NFL GM heading into the HOF, but about firing Chris Polian, the son and a young and below average GM promoted from a scout.

It is said that about 4 yrs ago Chris started to step in the personnel decisions. Almost from the same time we have suffered from inept draft selections in early rounds and we have seen Moore and Mudd 'retire' to get hired by other teams. Bill has been defending the picks/decisions in various circumstances, but he just cannot cover them up completely.

Honestly I don't think Chris' draft in 2011 was bad. Actually it could be the best since he started the business, and if things goes as usual he could have a couple of nice years to show he has improved into an eligible NFL GM. But he was unlucky Manning - the center piece of the system - went down. Thus the lack of talent thanks to his previous bad drafts have surfaced. Followed by a couple of bad decisions, e.g. getting Collins a big contract for 3 horrible games, the owner might already made up his mind to let Chris go.

A similar case is Mike Shanahan and his son Kyle. The later has been trying to show he is a genius by trying hard converting Rex Grossman into an elite QB, whick everybody knows will fail. There is no doubt Mike is a great coach, but once his top priority is to promote his son, it is only a matter of time to cost both of them their jobs.

Colts fans are definitely losing a great GM that cannot be replaced easily in Bill Polian, but as far as it is Chris Polian making decisions, at least for now it is not that hard to find one better than him.

Everyone makes mistakes, and they learn from them and improve. Chris might have learned his lessons but it is not his but Irsay's team, and one bad season at the bad time is enough to let this young man leave. He might eventually become a very capable manager but who knows which team will give him a chance.

I thought this long before the rumor mill. Lots of fans, including myself, were concernced about the long-term health of the organization long before the Kravitz bomshell article. In 2007 Bill started stepping back. it was the first time that we heard about Chris being resposible for a draft move that cost us a first round pick on Tony Ugoh. The rest was down hill.

Anyone who thought like I did saw that Chris needed to go. However, in the end Bill was a problem in his own right. Bill needed to go becuase he was starting to wind down and not tending to things as he had. Bill was becoming a public relations probem.

For Bill to become a public relations problem, he has been trying hard to defend the bad decisions by his son and protect his son's reputation. It just cannot work when they cannot back themselves up by winning.

I agree, Chris costs himself the job by his actions with drafting and staff moves. But Bill obviously isn't completely innocent with how he handled the situation. I am sure it was just as bad behind scenes as it was with the media. The main thing Irsay's speech showed me wasn't that Bill didn't deserve to get fired, but he made it a difficult decision for Irsay because of what Bill did for this team as GM and most all because of his respect for Bill, but not so much his son.

I think there is enough to suggest that Bill was a PR problem all on his own without trying to protect his son. The Jay Mohr thing was ridiculous. But more recently the handling of the perfect season (not the pulling the starters but his assault on fans after), the spin on Collins & Painter. It had gotten to like Irsay said - 'it was time."

Jim Irsay said something very qick but interesting yesterday, I am not quoted him but close. He said the whole team needs to be on the same page to be a success and when he walks in the locker everyone needs to be on board. I took that as that maybe some of BP antics were wearing on some players. After all if you treat your external customers as he did, who knows how he treated the people he was over.

I agree and to support the opinion Caldwell has not been fired since his players like him and still fight for him no matter what. Not the case for the Polians I feel since the time they let Tryon go.

The Jay Mohr thing? What was that?

I agree this is about Chris too...funny not a word of him by Irsay in that press conference. I believe Irsay had his doubts about Chris long term and did not want to see Bill keep doing less and less. This season just provided the opportunity to start new since Bill was going anyway.

His not having a word about Chris is a sign that in his own mind the guy does not deserve to be his GM and mentioned.

This sounds like Tryons tweet about " not being Caldwells decision to start me" were true.
