First Post-Regular Season Colt Mock

Recommended Posts

1) Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame.  It's been a rocky OL year, though not as rocky as the previous three.  Still, it seems like there are a lot of nice developing players who could be long-term pieces of the puzzle.  Seems like that between Holmes and Harrision, we have a center for next year and beyond.  The loser of that competition is probably a versatile interior back-up (next year's Lance Louis).  I'm less sure of RG, as I expected Thornton to settle down and be solid.  Not only did that fail to happen, but he was injured a lot.  Shipley, Donald Thomas, and Louis don't seem to have a future, but I could be wrong.  Costanzo and Mewhort were very good.  Cherilus was not good, and he was injured a bit.  Bottom line with this pick is that while there are a lot of moving pieces on this (possibly mismanaged) OL, there needs to be another definite piece for the future.  I'm not 100% sure about the financial impact of cutting Cherilus, but even if he stays, it would be great to have a cheap starting OT for the first few years of Luck's second contract.  If you gave Cherilus the RT spot again, Stanley could start at RG in the interim and be a humongous upgrade.  Thornton wouldn't be a bad guy to keep around and see if he improves.  At 6'5", 315, Stanley rose late in the season, and he has a Mewhort-esque college resume.

2) Nelson Agholor, WR, USC.  It took me a long time to come around to a WR this high.  But now I'm relatively certain Wayne is done, and I'm a little disappointed in how invisible Moncrief was when handed some golden opportunities.  Next year, I project the only returning WRs to be Hilton and Moncrief, along with the probable signing of Juron Carter.  That's not too much.  I see an early- to mid-round WR and the annual veteran on a "prove-it" contract.  Agholor is a typical outside WR (6'1", 190)  that can stand to add some weight/strength.

3) Adrian Amos, S, Penn St.  Admittedly, I'm projecting a bit of a rise for Amos in the pre-draft process.  However, he's well built and has spent a lot of time at CB, but still tends to play down hill.  I don't see the coaching staff over-reacting at Safety (since they didn't last year).  Landry should be gone, leaving us with Brown, Adams, McDonald, Howell, and Winston Guy probably returning.  That's a little light on coverage ability.  Amos will improve our ability to cover TEs and give us a long-term solution at the traditional FS role (though we call that guy a SS in our system for some reason).

4) Steven Nelson, CB, Oregon St.  We all know that the depth is iffy behind the top three CBs.  Nelson is very fluid and made for man coverage.  He'd go higher if he ran faster, but he won't test well.

5)  Thurston Armbrister, LB, Miami.  I'm pretty bullish on our front-seven compared to most of you.  But Armbrister had a big season, and he could be either ILB or OLB.  Reminds me a little of McNary in that he was a pass-rusher in college, but could project to the inside on the Colts.  I think we're doing okay across the LB corps, but another developing player is a good idea.

6) Terrence Magee, RB, LSU.  Richardson may be gone, but Herron should return to be the #1 guy.  I assume Grigson has learned the lesson that you don't have to invest heavily in the RB position.  Magee would do well on the Colts.  At 5'9", 218, he's a one-cut bowling ball that is hard to bring down.  He played some WR at LSU and has great hands.  However, he was never a starter.  Behind Jeremy Hill and the like, it's understandable.  (He even got fewer carries this year than a freshman phenom teammate.)  Bottom line: he's got reatively low mileage on him and his best football is probably ahead of him.

6) Ben Beckwith, OG, Mississippi St.  I know I said that there were pieces to the puzzle in place on the interior, but I'm just not 100% sure that they'll all work out.  Adding a versatile workman like Beckwith can't hurt.  You know, cauldren of competition and all that.  More of a LG type, who was conference OL of the week when he had to step in at center one game.  Maybe he makes the roster, maybe the PS...who knows?

7) Chucky Hunter, DL, TCU.  Smart, high-character type that hasn't put it all together yet.  But he's the right size and shape (6'1", 305), and he could compete with Kelcey Quarles to be a pass-rush specialist at the DE position at the bottom of the roster.

Obviously, I'm hoping for Mathis, Newsome, and Werner to be a pass-rushing force next year, and I've only made modest additions to try to improve the TE coverage problems (Amos).  But, giving Luck better protection, a more complete WR corps, and hopefully a better run game will improve our ability to outscore teams...and scoring more points thanthe other team is the key to winning games! ;)

i love the stanley pick, we absolutely need OL help, and if i were to take any OLineman in the first rd it would be him, if he falls to us of coarse, i seen him picked in the top 5 and not even in the first round on some mocks, so who knows

I would be happy with that pick at the #1 spot.  O-Line was a hot mess this year in some games and solid in others...in the end Luck was pressured, hit, or sacked way too many times.  I don't think we need to go OG in the 1st round so I can see us waiting as late as the 3rd if we plan to keep Cherilus.  When he's be in he's been pretty solid so I don't know that we MUST draft an OT high to be successful.  A developmental prospect in the 4-6 rounds might be a worthwhile risk if it means we can shore up this defense.

Outside of the O-Line problems, our defense is in desparate need of playmakers.  We need at least one OLB, another good corner, a SS, and ILB.  If we draft for anything on offense I'd like it to be a running back.

For what it's worth,  out here in Southern California,  the LA Times recently did a story on the NFL prospects for both USC and UCLA....

Agholor got good,  but not great reviews.   He's reportedly smaller than 6'1" and 190 and is thought not to be an outside receiver,  but more likely a slot guy and might go in the 3rd round.   Of course, all this is subject to change with the combine and pro days and private workouts.    But that's what scouts were saying about Agholor recently.

Well, the Colts do need a slot guy
