here in Denver the Broncos' defense is all anyone's talking about.

The game against the Cowboys did perhaps illustrate why Manning has just one Super Bowl ring. He is terrific. Incredible.

But the teams he has led have had deficiencies that were exposed in the postseason.

This last game brought to mind  the old saying:

"Offense wins games, but defense wins championships."

article   about author wanting a trade for Jags DE Babin

The Broncos might well win the Super Bowl in February.

But they ain't winning it this way.

Denver will need to win at least three straight games in the dead of winter to be NFL champion. The dead of winter isn't pretty. It's cold. And hard. The playoffs can be brutal tests of will.

The Broncos need defensive help. They need it now. And they need more than the return of suspended linebacker Von Miller.

No 37-year-old — heck, no 27-year-old quarterback — has ever played more remarkably than Manning during the 5-0 start to this Broncos season. But, in the dead of winter, you can't drive 95 mph and expect to stay on the slippery road to the Super Bowl.

Maybe, just maybe, the reason Manning doesn't own a better record in the postseason is his defenses in Indianapolis and Denver haven't been anywhere near championship quality. The Ravens did need 38 points to beat the Broncos in the playoffs.

"We'll have a serious talk with the leaders of the defense," Denver defensive lineman Terrance Knighton vowed in the minutes after winning a shootout in Dallas. "We understand you can't always count on the offense to bail us out. We've got to put a stop to it before teams expose us."

If Super Bowl or bust really is the Broncos' mantra, Elway will somehow find a way to get defensive help from somewhere.

*** He is right , Winter will be brutal, cant expect Peyton to keep pilling on points forever against the  best of teams in inclement weather where freezing cold , rain, or snow may all play a part Defense doesnt rank well save Vs Run

NFL FOOTBALL - DEFENSIVE RANKINGS & STATISTICS - OCTOBER, 2013

They say defense wins championships and if you are a regular NFL bettor, you know that defense wins bets too. At Odds Shark, we rank the best NFL defensive teams in more than a dozen important categories. And studying these defensive rankings in yards per play, fewest first downs allowed, fewest passing yards per attempt can give you a real advantage at online sportsbooks.

This page loads with the defense allowing the fewest points per game, which is the ultimate defensive stat.

However, it can be misleading if they are facing lousy red-zone offenses or if they have gotten lucky with turnovers. Starting the 2012 NFL season, three teams were 3-0 and they ranked second, third and fourth in that category

+++. Click the headings on each column to re-sort the category and see the best NFL defensive stats page on the Internet.

And scroll to the bottom for a listing of the acronyms and what they mean and why they are important to your NFL betting this weekend

all the stats follow the above  / note page brings up defense, can click on offensive rankings as well if want and sort either via clicking on any column heading  to see rank in that category

When Von Miller get's back, unfortunutely against Indy, it will improve things quite a bit.

So will the return of Champ Bailey.

With Champ Bailey and Von Miller out there, I don't think Dallas would have racked up that many points.  Especially Von Miller, he would have pressured Romo into throwing more picks.

Champ Bailey will give them some nice veteran leadership in the secondary as a safety, but hes too old to come in and make a major impact.

Von Miller will definitely give them a huge boost, especially since most teams are always trying to play catchup and he can just pin the offensive lines ears back every single play.  Thats what made Freeney and Mathis so formidable in Indy, because the offense was always scoring and forcing teams to air it out to catch up/keep up and it allowed pass rushing specialists like Freeney and Mathis to relentlessly attack the QB.

Looking forward to the Denver game, but New Orleans will be a nice test before we get there!

The article is kind of silly though, you cant put together an air show like they have out in Denver and also field a Championship quality defense on top of it.  Denver D has always been pretty solid, but with teams playing from behind so much, their numbers are going to be skewed because teams have to air it out a lot.

Its also why ranking defenses based on yardage is ridiculous.  Points per game, redzone defense, 3rd down conversions are all stats that actually matter to a defense.. who cares how many yards they give up.. how many POINTS did they give up?

Jerod - the defensive stats  says in points per game Denver # 25, doesnt have other 2 u noted,

saints will be a test, i think its there second road game in a row as i think playing in NE but not sure & leaving so not looking up now

Jerod & Valpro

Miller of course will help but will be Rusty I imagine for 1st game so at least us Colts get him then & not later & we can air it out or play ball control & Luck can move and throw, our TE but esp wayne and TY will mean they have to play entire field and Luck can exploit the middle i am sure

Think 1 of original  op articles was trying to make point u need someone like Doomervile opposite Miller for true impact like last year and freney & mathis  , thats why said to trade for babin

a good rush will help the DBs

Bailey said he will have lisfranc pain all year, i no longer have the links and also he apparently could of started last week but they didnt want him to as game  was on turf and thats when he hurts the most and also was when he got hurt  , I also previously posted article link not looking for now , sorry

Now indy has turf unless different turf has different effects, i have no idea on that

have a good day guys, must leave now

everybody keeps talking about weather...

Check the schedule...

Denver plays at NE in November and KC in December (cold)

Then they play at Houston (warm) in December and at Oakland in December (warm)

..all other games are at home...

It was a fluke that is was that 7 degrees in Denver last janaury when the Broncos lost.

Its was 50 degrees the previous Sunday and 50 degrees the next Sunday......our Denver friends told me last year..

the average daily temp in Denver in January is 40 degrees..

Unless there's a blizzard, I don't think the weather is going to shut down Peyton Manning

Last year Bailey was their CB#1 was he not?  He's still playing at a high level.
