salary cap

I hope the salary cap gets significantly higher because in 3 year the Colts will have Lucks, Fleeners, Allens, Richardsons, and Hiltons contracts to deal with. This is assuming (hoping) they all continue to develop into dominant players of course and also dealing with any other key players contracts that will need to be dealt with. The Colts could be looking at a serious cap situation when that time comes.

They will probably not have Mathis, Wayne and a couple others by then either.

When will luck be eligible for a contract extension? Do the same rules apply to hilton/fleener/allen/trich???

I believe Hilton and Fleener come a year before Luck and Richardson since they have 4 year contracts and the Colts have a fifth year option on Luck and Richardson.

The new CBA allows for teams and rookies to be able to renegotiate contract extensions after the third year of the deal.  So as soon as next season is over the Colts could start talking to their agents to work out another deal.

I think we'll be okay. Grigs seems to understand how to work with the cap pretty well. I doubt we loose any big play makers, though we probably will lose a few decent players. I don't see us spending the entire 20-40 mil that we are expected to be under this off season either. a few pickups but we'll be fine.

I agree, we have to consider the possibility that we might have to make a tough decision and let one of those guys go into FA.  Certainly not Luck, but the others could go.

Fleener right now would be the leading candidate as he hasn't showed us much.  But if he does then it becomes a really hard decision.

The good news is that in a couple years the salary cap is expected to jump to like 150 million.  But a jump in the salary cap would likely only mean that the best players are demanding more money.

It will be especially tough from the standpoint of Luck.  If we get away with paying him 10 million a year it will be a steal.  It remains to be seen if the guy will give Indy any kind of hometown discount or if he will pull a Joe Flacco and sqeeze every penny out of Irsay he can get his hands on.

    • I hope we keep Toppin, I didn't think we would. Paul George went to Philly for 4 years/212 Mill, so now we have them to deal with as well besides Boston, NY, and Milwaukee. I thought we were better than Philly before the George deal, not sure now.
    • Thank you for your response and thank you for enlightening myself regarding Partridge. I recall his signing but didn't know much about him until I joined this forum and read several of your posts speaking highly of him. Thank you!  I have researched him since then and have to agree with you, it is likely that his fingerprints were on this signing.    Davis' contract is such that there is no guaranteed money in his 2nd year, with a cap savings of nearly 6.5 million, so there is an out if needed. https://overthecap.com/player/raekwon-davis/8796    I have to think that his main responsibility is as Grover's back up...we all saw how much he was missed last season. Though, this is where Partridge comes in, there may be additional duties. One thing that struck me was when Partridge said (paraphrased) "that he could get Grover some more sacks.". Does that mean he plans to alter the DL scheme, and if so, could the same benefit apply to Davis? Not to mention @Douzer's thoughts of using both Davis and Grover on 3rd and short plus goal line situations...like you said, I am looking forward to watching it play out as well.
    • I'm not saying he is about to be a sack machine but you can see some of his potential as a one gap penetrator with that frame.
    • Davis came from Alabama. My point of interest as the writer highlighted is he is moving from being a 2 gapper into now only being responsible for a single gap with a lot more penetration from him versus read and react. With his length and power at 6ft 7 300 plus the expectation for him in our scheme is he will be more disruptive. A much more reliable option for us if Grover goes down in addition to whatever else maybe we can do with him.
    • Thank you. You guys are too kind, but I truly appreciate the support.    Perhaps I am being too hard on myself… But my point still stands that anyone who makes it to the NFL, whether practice squad or starter, has achieved something prestigious that only a rare few ever achieve.    Over a million high schoolers play. Of those only 7.8 percent move on to play in college.    Over 80,000 people play in college. Only 0.4 percent make it to opening day in the NFL.    Only 2,016 players make it to NFL rosters.
