What are these "books" you speak of? I have heard them mentioned by the ancients,

Seriously, good topic. So many NFL books have been written over the years but I haven't read many. Dungys books are good. I know John Capaletti had a good one and Brian's Song was great. Famous movie that will make you cry. Rosie Greer had a good one as well.

While I love the old War Stories books as ColtFan4Life mentions in "Fatso," I do not think you can go wrong with any of Joe Gibb's books.  Like Tony Dungy, Coach Gibbs always has a 'life message' and some devotional content.

  • "Fouth and 1"
  • "Game Plan for Life Chalk Talks"

I have always respected Coach Gibbs.  He has a couple of racing books too.

I think I need to get that Art Donovan book.

Let me suggest a few I've read:

Cruising With the Tooz (by John Matuszak)

Boys will be Boys (by Jeff Pearlman)

Marcus Allen Autobiography (by Marcus Allen)

Badasses - The Life & Times of John Maddens Oakland Raiders (by Peter Richmond)
