Well....   well...   well...   well....

Hmmm.....   interesting....

Of course it doesn’t mean anything if he’s not one of the 46 active tomorrow. Right now, Collins is only on the 53-man active roster.

But in the immortal words of Scarlet O’Hara,  tomorrow is another day!

I thought it was 45 not 46

Its 46 and they need to change it.  They’re already paying 53, let them all be active.

They need to to approach it as an injury concern.  A team may have a healthy scratch. If a couple of players at that position get injured during a game, they may have to play a guy who’s banged up when they have a healthy guy on the bench.

Several coaches are supporting eliminating the game day restriction.  The owners should go along since they're paying guys not to play.

The NFLPA needs to get involved and push it as a safety issue.

I’ve always been curious about the 46/53 man rosters.    And I read a number of years ago that the reason for it is that the owners of teams who typically are NOT in the playoffs believe the teams that typically ARE in the postseason have better rosters all the way down to the 53rd man.

Limiting the game day roster to 46 is an attempt to level the playing field.   To insert more competitive balance into the game between the haves and the have nots.

But with the move toward player safety,  I have to believe that expanding rosters and making everyone eligible on game day is in everyone’s best long term interest.   It should be an issue on everyone’s radar...

Personally, I’d be in favor of expanding to at least 55 and make everyone eligible on game day.    But, your mileage may vary...

The fact the NFL has a hard salary cap (and floor) should make this a non-issue ... a team that is a "have not" with a bad roster have only themselves to blame; injuries or other issues may cause short term problems; but in the long term every team should be able to field a competitive roster.
