Falcons tried to trade back up, to get Laiatu Latu ahead of the Colts.

I don't like Ewers as a pro prospect, but he actually had a productive season. Texas went 12-2 and made the CFP. Teams competing at that level don't make QB changes unless they really have to, and Texas didn't. And when they do, they don't turn to a true freshman who's already carrying the burden of living up to the Manning name. I don't know anything about Arch Manning, I haven't paid attention to him, have never watched him play, and I hold no opinion about how talented he is or how good he can be. But I don't know if him not beating out Ewers in 2023 means anything. It will be interesting to see what happens this season, though. Speaking of potentially overhyped freshman QBs, in 2019, Kedon Slovis was the next big thing at USC. He set records, won Pac 12 Rookie of the Year, etc. Things started to backslide for various reasons, including Covid, USC changed coaches, the new coach brought in Caleb Williams, Slovis has since transferred twice, and just went undrafted. Now he's signed with the Colts, with a nice guaranteed for a UDFA. I don't expect anything to happen with him at the Colts, but at least we know there's some talent there.

I think Ballard was sincere that he didn’t know Mitchell would after picking Latu at 15. I think the moment he felt confident was approaching pick 46, and he could see who was up next so he could gamble he could trade down 6 picks and Mitchell would still be there. Not sure if I’m repeating your point, but wanted to offer my two cents to clarify. -

Growing up in the atmosphere which most of these did (Not always the case with offspring) let's the individual see what is needed to make it to the next level. Throw in good athletic genes and is a recipe for a chance to excel. -
That's the big thing. The secondary got torched last year, but the three guys they intended to play big roles -- Rodgers, Flowers, Brents -- were unavailable for various reasons that were unexpected. We played third stringers at corner. It's not a real reflection of the secondary they were expecting to have going into the season. I still think an insurance vet at safety would be good, but it's obvious they are going to roll with what they have for now. And they'll be judged for it, good or bad, which is fine.
