Colts Are A Great Team

Yeah, his health isn't the best, but he is still the best RB we have.

He's still over paid, and he hasn't been able to stay healthy. The most important ability is availability, and all that jazz. Cliched, but true. He's not the best RB we have if he's on the bench, and he's been spending a lot of time on the bench lately. Can't pay him $5 million a year just because our other backs aren't as good as he is. Either get better backs (which would still be cheaper than Addai) or go with a committee.

What good is it to have one RB that runs well, one that catches well and one that blocks well when you can have all three in one? That's like having a DB who can tackle well, one DB who can cover well, and one DB who can return well. It's best to have it all into one, even if it costs a bit more.

It's not like that at all. You never know what the offense is going to do to take advantage of a one-dimensional DB, but you can gameplan to incorporate a one-dimensional RB into your offense. Teams use committees all the time, mostly because one guy is better than another at a particular task. And none of our backs are as one-dimensional as fans sometimes make them seem. Brown and Carter aren't as good in pass protection as Addai, but Brown is very good as a receiver out of the backfield, and Carter is above average as a blocker. And there are other backs who can do one or two things well, and they can be had for not a lot of money, especially compared with Addai.

And his blocking skills can't just be replaced with a better O-line; you gave 5 O-linemen, what do you do if the defenses blitzes with 6 or 7?

You keep a tight end in, or a fullback. Or the quarterback throws hot. Or any other number of things. It's called flexible gameplanning. You're acting like the only way to block a blitz is with a RB.

And even if that's the case, we can't pay Addai $5 million a year for the next two years just to pick up the blitz. That's an unwise use of our resources. I'd rather have Mathis and Garcon, and a cornerback and safety. Paying an oft-injured running back $5 million because he's "complete" and he blocks well is not good cap management, in my opinion. I said this last offseason, even though I like Addai. My offer would have maxed out at three years, $10 million, and if he walked, I would have been relieved that I didn't have to pay him that much. Would have gone a bit harder after Donte Whitner, and then we'd be good for at least the next two years at safety. Again, I like Addai, but he's not irreplaceable. His role can be filled in a number of ways for a lot less money.

So it seems like your major cons about Addai are health and price, both of which I agree with. He is a bit overpaid and hasn't been able to stay healthy. However, I still consider him an above average back and a very complete back. I don't want to see him leave the team though; I would be very happy if he restructured.

    • You know who is also kicking better?   Chase McLaughlin.
    • Not trying to over simplify but it is pretty simple. SS calls plays that he believes will work against a certain defense and he has confidence his players will execute that play. The results right now are that his players are NOT capable of executing those plays on a consistent basis enough to win games. The only question moving forward is, do we have good enough players to start to execute more consistently or not and is SS making it as easy as possible for players to be consistent. It's not just a talent thing. It's a attitude and smart thing and then the level of talent. Most of the time, the best players are the smartest players with the right attitude. How talented they are is a bonus. My point, i question our teams attitude and football intelligence as much as I question their talent. Ex.....Stopping the run is as much attitude as it is talent. A big part of why JT is JT, is because of his intellegence.
    • Thanks for the updates.  I made my "first pass" projected picks based on where the players are ranked on tankathon right now.  Obviously, subject to change!
    • He hasn't  been that good other than the 1 game he won last year.
    • The biggest problem is that the rest of the team is playing like trash around the rookie QB.    Of course the essentially rookie QB that has played 6 NFL games is going to be a rollercoaster.  He's known to have accuracy issues, and is for some reason being forced to be a pocket passer.    When the highest paid O-line in the league can't block, that's problem.  When the WR's can't catch passes that bounce off their hands, that's a problem.  When the highly invested in $$ D-Line (like 5 1st or 2nd rd players) can't block and LB's get consistenly washed, that's a problem.  When the highest paid kicker in the league can't kick and gets hurt constantly, that's a problem.  When the defensive scheme is to "bend not break" but the bends are to the tune of 100 yards a series, that's a problem.   Now's the time to strike in other areas while you have a QB on a rookie contract. Actually, this all should've been figured out already by the GM and all positions should've been rock solid by now.
