Austin Collie concussion video illegal hit or not?????

Illegal - it's helmet to helmet. According to the NFL's new guidelines regarding illegal hits, you cannot: lead with your forearm, shoulder, or helmet to the shoulder/helmet area of a player. The defender doesn't launch at Collie, but he is still leading with the helmet. I understand Coleman wasn't trying to go for a helmet to helmet, but it is what it is. As a defender, he has to take responsibility for his actions.

HOWEVER... Goodell and his goons do listen to common sense. They understand this injury was unavoidable due to the consecutive hit and Collie lowering his helmet, so they elected not to fine Coleman.

In short: The hit was illegal, but the circumstances leading up to the hit prompted them to dismiss it.

These hit rules are controversial. If this is an illegal hit, then the defender should either go for his legs (possible career ending injury) or run head first into his own teammate (possibly neck injury for one or both defenders). Is the defender just supposed to take the safe route and let Collie gain more yards when his job as a defender is to prevent the offense from doing so? Collie ducked his head in because he saw the defender coming from his right, but not the defender from his left who knocked him out. You can't blame Collie because he was just doing his best to keep the ball secure, natural instinct for football players is to lower the head and shoulders. It's hard to say, this play was so bang-bang that I don't think it would be any different if you replayed that scenario again. The defender hitting him from his right hit Collie in such a way that it changed his body position, but you can't blame him because he was just doing his job. It's hard to say.

Here's the thing. Eagles players lost the chance to break up the play. Therefore they had the only option left which was to tackle. You don't tackle by throwing your body against theirs in a full collision. Not only is it a stupid risk to your body (see Bob Sanders) but it risks the ball carrier bouncing off and running in for a 6. Wrap up the ball carrier. Guaranteed to stop the play at contact. Now days players are wanting to "blow up" the play and get known for making the huge hit. Not only is it stupid, it's risking the health of both players. Fundamentals state to wrap up the body and legs to tackle to maximize efficiency and safety.

In this situation, it was illegal, as much as Eagles fans want to cry about it. The rules in play state you can't hit the player in the head w/ the arms, shoulders or helmet. As flawed as those rules are is a different argument. Those are the rules presented and are expected to be adhered to.

I guarantee most of the blow hards that would say players are wimps now have never played against the physical specimens that are present in the NFL today. While the game has taken steps in recent years to prevent injuries (much to the chagrine of said blowhards) it's merely compensating for the larger, faster and stronger players in the league today. If you had a job where you were paid large sums of money but couldn't walk w/ out constant pain or disabling conditions, would you state its better to be tougher?
