Good read from stampede blue

The General Manager for the Indianapolis Colts, Chris Ballard, has been extremely conservative during his tenure at the helm. The lessons of being disciplined, love your draft picks, short term deals, bargain bin free agents, build in the trenches, and financial flexibility have all been preached. Those lessons have netted the Colts a total of zero division titles and one playoff win. With an extension last year, Ballard has found something that is extremely rare in professional sports, a new lease on life after producing few results. He has to take advantage of that by changing his ways.

Hard to argue those points. I'm just hopeful that Steichen will have enough pull to explain to Ballard how to build a team fast. He witnessed it in Philly firsthand, particularly on offense. I think one of the ways we find out is how much AR's weapons are addressed. No more of the "I like our WR's" crap from Ballard and go get some playmakers and no more of the "we have a crowded TE room" and go get a real TE...Last 4 teams left in the playoffs have some of the best TE's in the NFL and that's not a coincidence....It's a must. I don't want to hear about your 5th round pick safety from last year and how much we missed him.....Stop that crap and go get a veteran just in case it doesn't work and we don't have to hear how they were young back there...One thing that bothers me is he acts like he has 20 years to build a team instead of we need to win now.

Some of you worry too much that Ballard isn’t tying to win.  He doesn’t need someone else to tell him how to build the roster.  Yes Shane will have input as all coaches do but ultimately coaches coach and GMs build the roster.  Yes Ballard is doing it for Shane’s vision or he wouldn’t have hired him.

Ballard doesn’t seem to care that many of the fan base, and the owner, are aging out and don’t all have forever to wait for his often offered “delayed gratification.”

    • Good post.   I have thought this for at least six or so years. I thought it would have happened by now but WRs are getting paid almost like QBs now. So, you may be right. QBs are valued and having great weapons enables them to be more successful.   I also thought teams would begin to select WRs lower in the draft, the way RBs are, but that has not happened. In fact, it seems that WRs are being drafted earlier in the draft. This year, three WRs were drafted in the top 10 and at least one other was drafted in the first round.   I still think the value of WRs may drop because there are so many talented WRs coming out of college every year, but it may not happen yet.
    • I can't really debate that comparing Lynch/Shannahan to Ballard/Frank-Irsay is kind of silly because Lynch/Shannahan has had way more success. I was just trying to point out that many people only care if you win the SB and neither have. I think Ballard may have made the best move in his career when he hired Shane. How we went 9-8 last year was a miracle, a lot of it was due to coaching.
    • I see a noticeable difference after a new HC and two drafts. Ballard seems smarter just that quick. And I see our current issues on defense, and inexperienced QB the reason the playoffs are unlikely. I question the football intellect of all that expect it.  And comparing Lynch/Shanahan to Ballard/Frank-Irsay is silliness.   We are headed in the right direction finally.
    • Jared is a Colts fan.   He has some issues that cause him to overreact.  He is a good kid.    He admits his condition causes him to over react.  The kid is a die hard colts fan though
