Be gentle with me.

Cap: $68.9m

Let Walk:
Philip Rivers - Get out before he crumbles completely. He'll either retire or take a starting job somewhere else. Personally, I hope he retires.
Malik Hooker - 5th year option declined so the writing was on the wall. Major injuries and scheme fits issues.
Anthony Walker Jr - I personally like him but I don't think he will be re-signed. Right now he's our 3rd LB at best.
Marlon Mack - With Taylor, Hines & Wilkins we have our RB room set. Coming off a major injury, I don't think I'd bring him back.
Le'Raven Clark - I know, depth. This guy was awful in the past, is awful now and will be awful in the future. We can find better.
Tavon Wilson - He's a depth guy getting up there in age. We can replace easily.
Chaz Grenn - Oh please.

UFAs:
Jacoby Brissett - 1yr $7.5m - Locker room leader and excellent mentor for any new QB coming in. Comes back on a reasonable deal.
TY Hilton - 2yr $20m - Offensive captain and still productive on his day. Defenses still pay him a lot of attention.
Justin Houston - 1yr $7m - Defensive leader and still productive as a passrusher. At this salary he's pretty good value.
Denico Autry - 1yr $5m - Good rotational piece. No sense losing him.
Xavier Rhodes - 1yr $5m - Corners over 30 decline in value and skill. He proved himself last year and earns a $2m raise for taking the short term contract.
AQ Muhammad - 2yr $6m - Quietly productive in limited game time. A good piece to keep in our rotation.
Zach Pascal - 2yr $8.5m - Again, quietly productive and a good locker room guy. A good WR3 option. Good enough to actually sign rather than tender.
Trey Burton - 1yr $3.5m - Good weapon. Showed enough to be kept. We all know how much Reich loves his TEs.
TJ Carrie - 1yr 1m - Good depth and showed up well this year in limited action.

RFAs:
Mo Alie-Cox - second round tender - $3.5M
George Odum - 1yr $1.5m

ERFAs:
Ashton Dulin - $540,000
Taylor Stallworth - $750,000

Updated Cap: $16.36m

Free Agency:

Matt Feiler - G - 28yo - 6'6 330lbs - 3yr $16m - Took 848 snaps for Pittsburgh last year and allowed only 2 sacks and gave up only 2 penalties. Pittsburgh currently sit $13m over the 2021 cap so the chances of him being re-signed seem small. I'm anticipating Nelson being moved to LT (even though I think it's a terrible idea), so Feiler starts at LG, the position he played for Pittsburgh.

Updated Cap: $11.03m

Draft:
Trade: Indy trade up to pick #12 with SF. They give up their 2021 2nd & 4th round picks as compensation. Worked out as fair by the Draftek Value Chart

Round 1 - #12: Trey Lance - QB - North Dakota State - 6'3 224lbs - This is the time for Ballard to swing for the fence. He loves his picks but you're staring down the barrel of another year with JB under centre. Uber talented QB who fits how Reich likes to call games. He has a strong arm and a beautiful deep ball. He has very good mobility and good vision when he gets into the open field. He runs play action exceedingly well and excels on running pass plays out of the bootleg. If he had played this year he would probably be pushing Fields and Wilson for the #2 QB off the board. He played at a smaller school against inferior competition, but it's Reich and Brisett's job to bring the best out of him. I believe he could be our guy.
Round 3 - #84: Grant Stuard - LB - Houston - 6'1 227lbs - Team captain in college. Racked up 191 tackles for Houston over 33 games, 10% of those were for a loss of yardage. Excellent off the field guy. Was a highschool safety who converted to linebacker by packing on muscle mass. Good straight-line speed. Secure tackler. Takes snaps from all 3 off-ball LB positions. High motor and high octane energy. In my opinion his floor is as a standout special teamer, his ceiling is a very solid 4-3 LB. He is going to be too undersized for most teams to consider at LB, hence him landing with us.
Round 5 - #148: Darian Kinnard - OL - Kentucky - 6'5 340lbs - Big point of attack beast who is a tough run blocker. The scheme he was playing in at Kentucky was largely run based so he is less developed in pass protection but has the size and ability to develop. His best fit might end up being as a road grading guard rather than as a kick-stepping tackle. He comes in as a replacement for Le'Raven Clark for OL depth.
Round 6 - #180: Trill Williams - CB - Syracuse - 6'2 198lbs - Tall corner with good arm length, although measurements will need to confirm. Good fit as a boundary corner. Lacks the long speed for a man to man scheme so a zone scheme where he'll have help over the top will be best for him. He sat most of last season so will need development. He will likely start as a special teamer whilst he develops his coverage skills.
Round 7 - #211: BPA

Roster:
QB - Lance - Brissett - Eason
RB - Taylor - Hines - Wilkins
WR - Hilton - Pittman - Pascal - Harris - Dulin - Patmon
TE - Doyle - Alie-Cox - Burton
T - Nelson - Smith - Holden - Kinnard
G - Glowinski - Feiler - Pinter
C - Kelly - Pinter

EDGE - Houston - Autry - Lewis - AQ - Turay - Banogu
DT - Buckner - Stewart - Stallworth -
LB - Leonard - Okereke - Franklin - Stuard - Adams - Glasgow - Speed
CB - Rhodes - Rock - Moore - Carrie - Rodgers - Williams
FS - Blackmon
SS - Willis - Odum

K - Blankenship
P - Rigo
LS - Rhodes

Not bad.  However how does 800+360+60 = 1240?  Shouldn't it be 1220?  Also, don't forget don't we have Tell as a DB too?

Feiler is no better than Clarke, Feiler had trouble beating out Zach Banner, remember him? got cut as a rookie in camp. Got hurt early this year with the steelers and placed on i.r. Could be the only reason Feiler stuck with the steelers this year. I say no to any castoff o linemen from the steelers.

Round 3 - #84: Grant Stuard - LB - Houston - 6'1 227lbs - Team captain in college. Racked up 191 tackles for Houston over 33 games, 10% of those were for a loss of yardage. He is going to be too undersized for most teams to consider at LB, hence him landing with us.

My tape analysis:

Grant Stuard – Must have impressive speed to blow past team’s Safety vs Cincy 9:52 1Q.  Speed showing up again late in 2Q. Looked to be more of a SAM Linebacker.  Always out of position hitting wrong gaps to make plays to stop the run.  Whiff on QB 1-on-1 open field tackle 14:46 4Q.  Has issues disengaging.  One good chance seemed but Cincy’s #11 pushed him and should have been able to lock on and stop the play short but again out of range to make the play. Looks better in Pass coverage than running but never saw him make a pass stop.  Might have to keep future eye on WR Nathaniel Dell from UH.  More I watched UH’s team Safety #2 think just an under-performer.  Overall analysis of Grant Stuard is a failing grade = ignore imho

Also not sold on:

·         Jabril Cox (LSU) – 9 career ints can cover ground quickly 4.6 speed.  Can line up in man coverage against TEs and Slot WRs got the IQ to play Zone.  Still needs to refine his tackling angles.  Solo whiff tackle missed vs Ole Miss 3rd Q 8:11 left.  Overall Rd 2-3 potential

·         Zaven Collins (Tulsa) 66.3 run / 90.6 pass / 93.7 coverage - need our ILB to be good against the run.  Can't take bad angles.

Joseph Ossai (Texas) 88.7 run / 80.2 pass rush grades – article July 21, 2020 mentioned he took himself out of plays by taking poor angles to the ball. 4-2-5 scheme JACK LB.  Edge rusher first (WILL) or 3-4 defense

Good to great ILBs seems difficult to find and I know been harsh on A Walker for years but just seems BPA and what is available are always steps down and not improvements.  Say what we will about Walker but honestly he is arguably one of the best run and chase LBs in the league.

This draft probably has 1-2 LBs that we could use but so far haven't found one that am sold on to draft other than potentially Chazz Surratt (UNC).

Continuation...

Cox is a good player but seemed more like our WILL linebacker and we already have Leonard so no need.

·         Dylan Moses (Alabama) Very explosive LB.  Excels at tracking down ball carriers.  Some questions about his health.  Freak-level athleticism.  Coverage remains a struggle but should be good in zone scheme.  Multiple penalties vs Florida are concerning.  Indecision on runs ends with him out of position.  Just seems apprehensive.

The way the media outlets and folks around here talking seems Walker is done here.  Not sure if game plan is to move Okereke over to MIKE and try to draft Chazz  Surratt to take over at SAM.  Obviously that means our Surratt will be our First Round pick and if so feel would have to trade back just to get him so not a big reach.  Logical downfall is why draft Surratt at SAM if our SAM linebacker generally only sees the field 25-30% of the snaps?  I know the Colts have been good at finding late mid-round LBs in the past and trust to find a backup/potential starter again with more research. Overall doesn't seem to be our BPA pick for Round 1 nor see Surratt being available by the time the Colts pick late in Round 2.  Again back to the drawing board...

    • Did you all take notice to all the different Swiss-army knife type of guys they drafted and/or signed this year? I was writing in the RB's thread and thought this could use its own thread to discuss.   Is this a radical change in philosophy by Ballard and Dodds?   Is this Shane Steichen's imprinting himself on the roster? Starting with Downs last year and Gould this year as they are not a prototypical CB type of WR   Is this simply a one-off because all 25 starters are under contract from last year?   Is this pure dumb luck to pick up these types of players?   Drafted Bortolini - Started and played at all but LT in his college career Gonclaves - Started at both LT and RT in his career Simpson - Started at both CB and FS at Auburn and played well at both Abraham - Started at FS in college and then CB while at Marshall and played well at both - reverse of Simpson (and definitely not a prototypical CB defensive back in terms of measurables but is essentially the same build as Moore without the super long arms) Carlies - Started at CB, then hybrid SS/LB and now LB for us - offers 3rd down coverage abilities     UDFA Tucker - Started and played both RT/RG at Marshall Slovis - Started in three different offensive systems in college at USC/Pitt/BYU - that does help his cause IMHO - Plus at USC played with NFL caliber talent around him and was amazing Pennix - Started at RB, played HB/FB and TE lining up all over the field (for my fellow ND fans just think how they utilized Tommy Tremble - who is woefully underused in Carolina) Bean - Started at QB and did well at KU last year but now listed as a combo QB/WR because of his running abilities - interesting though as a third QB while rostered as a WR - doubt it happens but does expand the trick play ability as well as having a rostered QB without taking up the 3rd spot on the 53???? Again, one can dream but he'd have to show out to even crack the top 6 WR slots. White - Started his career in college as a RB and converted to WR - his RAC is superb Young - Started at S with OSU and then converted to LB at KU - offers 3rd down coverage abilities like Carlies   Thoughts?   Any other outliers I may have missed?
    • This is an interesting topic to discuss and there are and likely will still be many opinions, so what the &%$# I'll offer my opinion as well! LOL   Locks Jonathan Taylor: Clear number one and paid like a franchise back Evan Hull: Drafted by CB/SS to operate as a third down/pass catching back   The case for the rest Trey Sermon: Has the build and play strength to be a durable lead back which makes him the default backup to JT as the lead back. Earned another long look as he performed well when called upon last year AND has a bit of a leg up because he was also with SS in Philly for a year. Familiarity counts sometimes.   Tyler Goodson: As a change-of-pace scat back I guess he could add a different dimension to the backfield and as a return man. I wonder if he adds more value than Pennix (mentioned later).    Zavier Scott: Converted WR from Maine. I am sure they see something in him to sign him and then convert him, perhaps another year on the PS will complete that transition but I don't see him supplanting Sermon or Hull UNLESS they are strictly looking for a special team's guy as a backup?   Trent Pennix: This year's UDFA that was a versatile RB, HB and TE in college and for my fellow Notre Dame fans think how they used Tommy Tremble as a Swiss army knife guy offensively and that was Pennix role. Pennix is technically a better athlete than Tremble (who is absolutely being wasted on the Panthers roster) so I really like his chances over Goodson and Scott because of his versatility and previous HB/TE duties as a blocker. I big, bruiser that can run AND catch the ball out of the backfield, in the flats as an HB or down the seam as an in-line blocker offers a lot of options to a creative play-caller like SS.  I like Granson but I wonder if this is potentially his replacement this year or next? They are extremely similar in size/speed measurables, and this is Granson's contract year so it makes sense if they are looking ahead even if they are listing Pennix as a RB?    Ultimately, I think this decision for the third back and fourth back is dependent on what they decide at WR (Goodson at RB and Gould over Dulin for example) and TE (Cut Alie-Cox and perhaps Pennix as a FB/HB/TE combo over Granson).
    • I wanted stroud but knew he wouldn't  be there. I did like Richardson  over Levi's though
