Austin Blythe starting?

Remember that guy we drafted in the 7th a couple years ago? Well I saw he got a lot of playing time in the rams last game. Then I read a little more and found that Austin Blythe may start at RG for the rams after Jamon Brown’s suspension. I liked him and thought he had potential when we drafted him, but he was surprisingly cut. I kinda wish we held onto him for depth for our interior. Remember, he was the 2nd best college center that year behind Kelly.

He started at center last year when we played the Rams

I think he's thought of as a pure C and we probably had better options at G at the time, believe it or not.   With Kelly our staring C for years, we need more versatility at the backup C position.  Interesting that he'll be starting at G this week though.

PFF just released the grades for Guards and Blythe was the top graded for week 1. He was impressive when I watched him and handled his blocks really well.

I was shocked when CB allowed him to walk.

Wow.  That's nice.  We'll see if he works out to be a long term option for them.

Glad to see he's getting a shot.  Always like to see Hawkeyes playing in the league.  

 

But I will say when he was with the Colts he looked bad.  I think there was one play where a defensive tackle faked him out so bad that he didn't even get his hands on him before the DT killed the QB.
