Colts place CB D'Joun Smith on IR/Designated for return; promote CB Eric Patterson (merge)

I liked Brandon Dixon in the 2014 draft. I think he is a good addition to our PS and could develop. I was somewhat impressed with Patterson this preseason and I hope he turns out to be a diamond in the rough, but hopefully we get Butler back for Monday night as I believe Patterson still needs a lot of work.

So does smith have to miss a certain number of games or can he come back soon as hes healthy? I cant remember the rule, i was thinking hes got to miss atleast 4 weeks?

Eight weeks. He can practice after six weeks, if cleared. Once he practices, the team has three weeks to activate him (as long as he's been on reserve for at least eight weeks), or he goes to IR for the entire season.

Thanks Superman, i thought there was a rule on IR designated to return but couldnt remember exactly. This is a bit troubling considering Toler can never stay healthy. Heres to hoping Brown and Price are ready to step up and play big time minutes because we desperatly need another outside corner opposite Vontae to stay healthy and atleast play above average D on other side of the field.

If we have Vontae shadow good WRs, then it makes easier to compensate for other factors. Of course, tough matchups are tough no matter what, but this week for instance, we could put him on Decker, and then bracket Marshall, like the Pats did with Hilton. I have no doubt that Vontae can shut down Decker for four quarters. Then the Jets either play Marshall on the opposite side and let the defense rotate that way, or they play him in the slot on either side, where it's easier to help on him.

They have no TEs worth mentioning. I don't think they have the personnel to really hurt us across the middle. So we can either sag in to help on short stuff, like the Bills did on us, or we can play one over the top of whoever we choose, and make the other guy beat Vontae (which ain't happenin').  This is the game to be short on corners, if there ever was one.

What Fitzpatrick did really well with Andre Johnson last year was hitting the outside routes, especially the backside fade. Vontae can't stop that against a big receiver; no one can, really. So let the corner play aggressive, even shaded to the outside and trail underneath, and keep help over the top. Whatever we do, they don't have a third threat in the passing game, unless Devin Smith plays.

Revis might be the only 1 who doesn't get beat by large receivers on fades

I know it's still very, very early in Smith's career. But he sure has had a rough beginning. And we passed on T. Coleman to draft this kid. It sure would have been nice having Coleman to share carries with Gore, especially since he is on a pitch count.

Hopefully Smith will turn things around later this season or next year and be a quality DB.

what happened in preseason to make you think that?

Patterson showed up multiple times on special teams and, on defense. he was in good position in coverage to make a few break ups and he wasn't afraid to make a tackle. He impressed me to the point I had to look up who he was. D'joun wasn't bad from what I saw but he also never stood out, IMO.

Look up the emergence of Chris Owusu that Chan Gailey has been lining up everywhere, in the slot and outside and how he has beaten out Jeremy Kerley in the depth chart and thus stealing targets from Marshall and Decker. I had to look up the ganggreennation (like our Stampede Blue) to see how he has emerged. Just an FYI :).

Here is an article about him:

Owusu is good, or can be. He's just a headache away from being out of the league.

They actually used Decker in the slot, though, at least against the Browns. Enunwa was #2 in the slot. I'm not worried about him, but it would be just like the Colts to let a no-name have a big game against them on national TV.

That's part of why I'd choose Decker for Davis to follow. If they run him in the slot, Davis is basically improving the weakest part of our defense, and then we can help more to the outside.

    • Appreciate the response.   A few thoughts to share….   i think Irsay only steps down IF his health deteriorates.  No use in comparing him to Kraft, his health appears to be better even though he’s much older.     But if Irsay stepped aside, here’s why I don’t see the daughters blowing things up and starting over.   If they fire Ballard — fine.  But if they also fire Dodds and Brown, at that point, I think you’d see the rest of the scouting department resign (if they weren’t fired too).  They will all get good jobs elsewhere too.     At that point, Steichen is surrounded by very few who know him.  Worse for the daughters…. There would then be a clear line.   With Irsay vs with the daughters.  And if the new GM doesn’t do well and things go south, then the blame won’t go as much to the new GM as it will to the daughters who decided to blow things up.   They’ll be the focus of incredible hate if the new regime makes fans long for what looks like the good old days of the Ballard years.      The argument for not hiring Dodds or Brown seems to be little more than Ballard-hate.  Those people want nothing more to do with anyone associated with Chris Ballard.   Guilt by association, not because of ability.      Thats why I described hiring one of Dodds or Brown as the easiest, simplest, cleanest move to make.  Much less risk.  But blowing it up and starting over is the far higher risk move.  Threading a tiny needle hoping to get it right.     By the way, if you fire Ballard and company and hire a new GM, who does those interviews?   Honestly, who?   Who would you feel good about conducting the interviews of the new GM?      Firing someone is easy.  Hiring the right person is really hard.    Thanks for your patience.
    • I just want to be on record now. If the Colts fire Ballard for whatever reason in the next few years, I have no clue what direction they will go. Just wanted to get that out there in case any of you were wondering my opinion on this.
    • I understand there are a lot of people that don’t know the story. I for one am burnt out on it. I do find it funny they “stole” the Ravens from Cleveland but whine about the Colts leaving. Sports bring out the best homers and team spirit.
    • Colts by 17. Going to be a rough week for you buddy.    Thats a joke. I have no idea but would probably lean towards the Packers winning if I had to choose. I do think it’s great you may have transitioned to a third franchise QB in a row. I hope Love has a great career for you guys. Always had a soft spot for the Packers and they would probably be my team if I didn’t love the Colts. I enjoy it when you guys are good. Best of luck this year!!
    • Packers have a pretty strong and balanced team. The defense was able to hold the Chiefs to a low score last year while the offense was perhaps the only one to score over 24 points on the Chiefs defense.    But really it’s hard to say as of right now. Let’s see how everyone fares during training camp and after their season openers. Lots of things can change.
