NFL Combine: Day 4 Reaction

Recommended Posts

Day 4 featured the defensive backs. The group showcased their speed, and a lot of people helped out their stock. However, some top talents didn't perform well. I break it down for the last day of the combine.

Dee Milliner is the real deal! Not only did he post a 4.37, but also posted a 36 inch vertical. Then, in the positional drills, he looked very solid and showed his good hands. Today he proved that not only is he productive, but extremely athletic. Add the fact that he has great size and you could be looking at a top 3 prospect.

Tyrann Mathieu had a big day. After taking the year off, many thought he would disapoint at the draft. Well, that didn't happen. He ran a 4.5 40, which is a bit better than what people expected, but it was in the positional drills where he impressed people the most. He showed great leaping ability and great hands in the drills. He transitions well from side to side when back pedaling, and has good backwards speed. He impressed a lot of people and helped his stock.

Johnthan Banks hurt his draft stock today. Banks posted a terrible 40 yard dash time of 4.61, had 10 bench reps, and a 34 inch vertical. He was average at best for the athletic drills. Even in the positional drills, his footwork was a bit sloppy and looked tense in his hip turns. He definitely hurt his stock, maybe badly enough to drop out of the first round.

Darius Slay had a very good day and helped himself a lot. Slay turned heads with his 4.36 40. However, what really got me is how fast of a start he got. The first 10 yards of the 40 are extremely important, especially for cornerbacks, and Slay nailed it. He showed today that he's explosive and that he's for real. He had a much better performance than his teammate Johnthan Banks.

Eric Reid looked solid out there. Not many people are talking about him, but he was at the top of all the athletic categories. He had a 40 inch vertical, which is extremely good for a safety. He posted a 4.53 40, which is also solid for a safety. Finally, he had a 134 inch broad jump. Those are all at the top when talking about safeties. In the positional drills, he showed great speed and good turning. I like his technique. He may have sneaked into the first round.

Xavier Rhodes had a good day. Rhodes and Banks were neck and neck for the #2 cornerback title. With Banks' bad day and Rhodes' very good day, it seems that Rhodes took that spot. Rhodes posted a 4.43 40, which is great for a guy who's 6'1. He also 40.5 inch vertical and a 134 inch broad jump. That shows that he's explosive and fast, which is great for a cornerback. Add the fact that he has great size and you could be looking at a top 20 prospect.

Logan Ryan had a lot on the line going into the combine. Unforunately, a bad performance may have killed his stock. A lot was riding on him because of his inexperience. If he wanted to get noticed and get picked high, he needed to have a big combine to prove he's athletic. Unfortunately a 4.56 40, 32 inch vertical and a 116 inch broad jump did not help him. He dropped a lot of spots today.

    • It is no doubt the hardest position in sports. With me regarding QB's, it depends on what team they play for, and it depends on how likeable I see them as a personality.    For example: I will never root for a QB to do well/succeed if they play for Houston, Jacksonville, or Tennessee. Can't do it, they are in our division. Also, I will never root for a QB to do well/succeed if they play for Pittsburgh or New England either. Too much bad blood over the years with me with those teams. I can't stand either team. Attitude wise - 3 QB's I never liked were Ryan Leaf, Colin Kaepernick, and I am with you on Jay Cutler. Cutler was an odd ball that didn't seem to want to master the position but had all the talent in the world. Leaf was a jerkbutt, and I have my reasons for not liking Kaep which I won't get into in here.
    • First Pacers game I have watched from beginning to end in at least 10 years.  I felt like they were exciting to watch.  They do get sloppy sometimes.   They move the ball well, lots of passing.   Boy they really let this one slip away.  As the coach defend against the inbound for a 3 pt shot and immediately foul.  Still hard to pull off, but you can't let them have that 3 pointer.   I still struggle to watch the NBA.  Traveling,  carrying,  pushing and shoving,  phantom foul calls.  Just weird to me.
    • She is doing just fine, through 5 games she is averaging 17 Points, 5 Assists, and 4 Rebounds and still hitting the 3 well. Problem is the Fever have a bad team right now. They will get another high draft pick next year which should help.    They could easily be 2-3, they have lost 2 games by 2 points. I am following it some
    • I don't fear having a young guy back there as long as he can play and he is on par athletically and intelligent. The system is made to play young guys early.
    • As we know, it’s the hardest position in team sports to master.  You not only have to know where your teammates are on the field, you also have to know where all the defenders are.  It’s 3-dimensional chess.    So, in the last week, two similar stories have come on my radar.   In one, the 49ers Brock Purdy is putting on weight.  And in the other, the Ravens Lamar Jackson says he’s taking weight off.   And I’m here to say I want both to succeed.   Purdy feels he needs more armour and Jackson feels he needs more mobility.     Whatever the reason,  I pull for guys who recognize everything revolves around them and are trying to get better for the good of the team.      Once upon a time I wasn’t a big fan of Geno Smith.  Now he’s figured things out and is doing well for the Seahawks.  So I hope he does well.   A long time ago I wasn’t a big fan of Randall Cunningham in Philly.   Then he reinvented himself in Minnesota and I was so happy for him.      Damn, the position is just soooo hard.  So if a guy figures it out, I root for them.  I think in all my years the one guy I didn’t pull for was Jay Cutler.  Miserable guy who always seemed to put himself before the team.  Yuk.   Thanks for indulging me….
