Well fountain wasnt on the NFI for very long..

I just listened to his interview on the Colts podcast.  Sounds like he’s in great shape physically and mentally.   He admitted he wasn’t in football shape last preseason.

Its going to be tough for any WR not named Hilton, Funchess or Campbell.  But from listening to a lot of them, they all think the competition will show out.  I wouldn’t be totally shocked if even Funchess got beat out.

I think the only way funchess is getting beat out is if he gets injured.

I really think our receiving core is shaping up to be TY, Funchess, Cain, Campbell the next few years. It actually works well because TY will be getting ready to retire when Campbell and Cain are due a second contract.  If Funchess plays well enough to get extended and we keep him a few more years he will be at the end when Cain and Campbell are up. It all works really well for the Salsry Cap.

Could be, but I’m not buying in on Funchess until I see it.

DHB, Nicks, Johnson, Aiken, Grant...well, you get why I’m a ‘show me’ fan.

If Cain or Fountain emerges at X as the year goes on, I think it's going to be bad news for Funch.

I truly hope he balls out, I just know he's struggled to be a complete receiver his entire career. If he's limited to possession X and/or slot bully, I just don't see us paying big dollars long term for him if Cain/Fountain are doing well.

Even if he does well, I can see Ballard using a late 2nd or 3rd round WR that fits Funch's physical profile. There were plenty of big bodied WRs that were promising in rounds 2-4. Hell, DK didn't go till the end of the 2nd. Hakeem Butler (6-5, 227) was available in the 4th. IMO, he'll have a better career than DF.

Funchess still gives them the size that we don’t have at WR. Funchess big comp to get resigned is Ebron. I saw ebrons stats and he had most of his receptions in the slot or out wide. He had very few at the tight. They are the same player.

TE and slot routes are very very similar. Alignments are almost the same too. Both are "possession" receivers in 90% of routes . A "bully" slot (typically a big X) is almost the same as a TE, just a few pounds lighter. So yes, they're very similar.

The problem with Funch is he's never been a well rounded X. He's always excelled at the bully slot or possession type routes, and struggled with much of the rest. And keep in mind that Funch was a converted TE in college.

Purely my opinion, but I'd rather have a well rounded X at 6-2 that can play both prototypical X (outside, and with speed), that can also float to big slot, than a 6-4 X that is great at big/bully slot, but struggles on the outside and/or deep.

Ebron's stats would say he's pretty darn good at most routes. His yard/catch average is higher than Doyles, and even higher than the likes of Zach Ertz and other TEs. Ebron's only weakness (vs Doyle and Ertz) is his catch %, but is still 8%+ pts higher than Funch's (which is a lot). His "air yards" ranking was 3rd among TEs, and he was 6th among target quality rating.
