I'm a little bit confused.

I've found a Jeremy Ross, signed in 2011 by Patriots, who is punt/kick return specialist, height 6' weighing 209 pounds

This article says he is 5'11" weighing 213 pounds. He's put on some weigh?

Is it possible, that he was signed for special team?

Weights change, heights are sometimes exagerated.

Bottom of the roster players come and go all the time. This is just the first new warm body for training camp - probably doesn't mean much. What I'm confused is what the OP started this thread for. First FA of what? The new year? Sarcasm perhaps? And the interesting part is that this happened without anyone steering the ship. Makes me kind of curious what the chain of command is in the office at the moment. Who decided they wanted this guy (Telesco?) and what did they have to go through to get it approved.

IMO Telesco or Caldwell wanted him, perhaps rather Caldwell...he hasn't resigned ST coordinator, now signing a guy who is perhaps good for ST as kick/punt returner...

Am I right, if I believe that this sign doesn't mean he will be playing?

During training camp they will have dozens of players on hand above and beyond the regular roster. You never know what the teams intentions are, but the vast majority of those players get released.

I just looked up this player as well, and one article went out of it's way to describe him as a lousy receiver who specialized in kick returns in college. So yes, the Colts probably want him for special teams. Lefeged was horrible in that roll this season (not that he had a chance with such poor blocking), so I'm sure that this won't be the only kick return prospect they bring in.

And we thought that this would never happen...

Exactly. This was guys from the practice squad. There are other post about Ross around the forum somewhere. It's not news, as teams typically sign guys off of their practice squad at the end of the season regardless of a GMs presence or not.

Look at the roster page, which hasn't been updated since the season:

Ross was a PS guy, not some guy off the street. It's hardly news.

EDIT: And it says this in the actual article. Oops. Nonetheless, it's not really like they grabbed someone off the street. When that comes, then I'll think something is up. Just signing the PS guys to get them into camp is not news.
