I did not realize he was released by the browns.  At 6-3 280lbs he is big enough to play 3-4 DE.  He is always a decent player.  Maybe Grigson takes a look at him.

If he's any good, why did Cleveland let him go? They are switching to a 3-4 defense too so he would make sense to keep if they thought it was a possibility of playing a 3-4 DE.

Maybe I just thought of it wrong as I read more articles on him.  The Browns say he is strictly a 4-3 end but his strength is stopping the run.  So an end who has the size and his strength is playing the run cant play 3-4 end I guess.

In a 1-gap 3-4 scheme (like the Texans run) he'd probably be ok at DE.  In a 2-gap scheme though he's probably too small.

 

As far as body type goes, he sounds comparable to Jamal Anderson or Tyler Brayton.  In a 4-3, they'd be good at DE on early/run downs and better at DT on passing downs...which is how we used Brayton and Anderson last year quite a bit.  They likely wouldn't have the strength though to go up against double teams on every play like a 3-4 DE would need to do in a 2-gap scheme.

One guy that hasn't had a ton of attention is Ricky Jean Francois, from San Fran. I think he would be a nice pickup for our DE position. I have no idea what his market value would be, but at 6'3" 300lbs would fit in our system.
