OhioColt Armchair Offseason Adjustments

Recommended Posts

As of 01/13 according to OTC the Colts have 19.804m in available cap space.  With the fourth pick in the first round of the NFL draft the Colts should be able to secure a young future QB.  As such expect Matt Ryan to be released.  With a new coaching staff and mindset coming in to quickly rebuild this Club can see major changes this offseason and see major changes on both sides of the ball.  As such the Colts will shave off a lot of money to free up cap space and be competitively aggressive in FA.

Roster Cuts/Trades

QB – Matt Ryan - thank you Matt but we finally look for a young future franchise QB

RCB Stephon Gilmore – played very well and would normally extend but is being replaced by a younger equal in RCB Cameron Sutton (Steelers)

DL Grover Stewart – 9.625m reasons he becomes a cap savings.  We trade him to rival Texans which should give us one or more picks in Rounds 4-6.  Stewart would be a big upgrade over Roy Lopez.

NCB Kenny Moore – save 7.671m in cap space trading him to the Bears reuniting him with their HC and should command a Round 3 grade and their late Round 5 pick.

TE MAC – With Woods coming on strong at the end of the season and Granson playing decent do believe MAC can be released once Ogletree comes off IR.

OC Ryan Kelly – Ryan Kelly PFF grade 63.9 –Scott Quessenberry (Texans) way worse 37.5 grade and Jags Fortner 50.5 grade Titans benched Aaron Brewer 59.6 grade.  Denver’s Graham Glasgow 56.1 grade…Giants Jon Feliciano 57.7 – Washington or Arizona while the Rams aren’t much better plus Seattle needs an upgraded Center.  The AFC South and NFL West have the worst Centers in the game.

Trading Kelly to the NY Giants will increase our cap space to 75.022m.  Kelly would be an immediate upgrade over Feliciano plus reunite with Glowinski.  The selling point is clearly Kelly still is a quality veteran player and to me worth the Round 3 grade and add their seventh pick.

Own FA Resigned

LB Bobby Okereke

WR Ashton Dulin

WR Parris Campbell

LB E.J. Speed

CB-ST Tony Brown

Edge-ST Khalid Kareem

K - Chase McLaughlin

FS-ST Armani Watts

P Matt Haack

Free Agency Offensive Additions

RG Daniel Brunskill (49ers) – 49ers are low on cap space and Brunskill is an upgrade over Fries.

RG/C Evan Brown (Lions) 4-year deal similar to what Glowinski got.  Both Brown and Brunskill are upgrades over Fries with Brown moving to Center.  Would a new Lion’s coaching staff here be what it takes to make Brown jump ship?

LG/C Aaron Brewer (Titans) – not a standout starter like Nelson but adds solid depth behind Nelson.  Titans are in cap space troubles.

LT Calvin Anderson (Broncos) – 3- or 4-year deal. Anderson is an intelligent and quality player who will add depth behind Raimann

RT Chuma Edoga (Falcons) – Edoga was playing well before landing on IR

Offensive outlook ’23 Roster:

QB: TBD, Foles, Ehlinger

RB: Taylor, Moss, Jackson

WR: Pittman Jr, Campbell, Pierce, Dulin, Strachan, Smith

TE: Woods, Granson, Ogletree

LT: Raimann, Anderson, Murray

LG: Nelson, Brewer

OC: Brown, French, Pinter

RG: Brunskill, Fries

RT: Smith, Edoga

Free Agency Defensive Additions

LCB Rock Ya-Sin (Raiders) – bring him back home again to Indiana

RCB Cameron Sutton (Steelers) – The Steelers are low on cap space so Sutton may not be obtainable.    Sutton was ranked 24th best corner this year – easily offer a minimum 3-year 21m guaranteed with 12m signing bonus

FS Donovan Wilson (Dallas) – Dallas also low on cap space presently. Wilson has been one of the best box safeties and blitzer with an 88.7 pass-rush grade, 4 sacks, 12 pressures.  Like Sutton offer a 3-year contract 21m guaranteed, 12m signing bonus

SS Taylor Rapp (Rams) 5-year deal comparable to Sutton and Wilson.  Rapp is going to get paid and like Dallas and Pittsburgh the Rams are in financially troubles.  McLeod played extremely well but again the Colts go younger signing Rapp.  The risk/reward of trading up last year drafting of Nick Cross as expected hasn’t paned out.  Not totally shocked as had removed Cross from my draft board.

RDE Marcus Davenport (Saints) – Another Club in financial troubles is the Saints.  Davenport replaces Yannick playing opposite of Paye creating a solid book end with Buckner still wreaking havoc in the middle.  Davenport should get something offered like Yannick’s deal of 13m guaranteed and 8m roster bonus.

Trysten Hill (Cardinals) 2-year deal replaces Grover Stewart.  Another IDL I like is Teair Tart (Titans) but he has an RFA designation.  The Titans are pressed hard for cap space so not sure what they can do about Tart yet.

RDE Chase Winovich (Browns) 2-year deal and would pair nicely with Davenport creating another solid edge group

Defense outlook ’23 Roster:

Edge:  Paye, Odeyingbo, Kareem

IDL: Buckner, Hill, Cowart, Slade, Johnson

Edge: Davenport, Winovich, Odengibo

WLB: Okereke

MLB: Leonard, Speed, Moore, Moore

SLB:  Franklin, Domann

CB: Ya-Sin, Flowers

SS: Rapp, Denbow, Cross

FS: Wilson, Thomas II, Blackmon, Watts

CB: Sutton, Brown

With money left over our top draft the top needs would be QB and DT while adding RB, TE, LB, and CB depth

This isn’t an off-season adjustment. This is a tear down and buy back thru FA. Ballard would never do this. Plus Grover was a huge benefit to our d line and you want to get ride of him? For Hill who didn’t have nearly as good of a year. No thank you for that.

some of your trades would simply not happen.  You are not getting a third rounder for Kenny Moore. You aren’t getting a third for Kelly either. They have not been good and are older vets so teams are dropping key picks for these guys when a rookie would be about as good.

I dont like any of this. Idk why we'd cut Gilmore and Grover, both were great for us. 5 OL in FA?! Very unlikely. Ya Sin? Rarely do players ever sign with the same front office that trades them. Dont know why we'd splurge on Rapp. Resign Mcleod who played great and let Cross grow. They traded up to get him, they won't give up on him yet.
