Colts Recap -- Week 7 (A Little Late)

Sorry it's a little late:

Saints 62 vs Colts 7

What the Colts did Right

When you lose a game 62-7, you really didn't do much right. The only bright spot on offense was the play of Delone Carter, and Donald Brown later on in the game. Delone Carter was more impressive. Delone Carter ripped off a 42 yard run that included several brocken tackles. Dan Orlovsky made some nice passes at the end of the game, but he didn't help.

On defense, Antoine Bethea had an okay game leading the team in tackles. Kevin Thomas also had a nice debut. Pat McAfee had a good punting game.

What the Colts did Wrong

The Colts lost by 55 points, so a lot of things went wrong. For starters, the offense was just terrible. The main thing that the Colts needed to do going into the game was turnovers. The first thing the Colts did was turn the ball over and it wouldn't stop. They turned the ball over 3 times, 2 fumbles, 1 interception. That was a problem, but not the biggest problem. The main problem was the Colts pass defense. Stopping Drew Brees is not an easy task, but at least challenge him. The Saints had 9 possesions and they scored points on all nine. He effectively moved the ball against the Colts, and it seemed like nothing phased him. There was absolutely no pressure from the defensive ends, and the Colts didn't blitz at all. Drew Brees had all day to throw, and if he gets that he'll beat you. Another problem was Darren Sproles. That little guy seems to always kill us and today was no exception, as he ran over us. The Colts rush defense was horrible too as Mark Ingram and Darren Sproles combined for nearly 180 yards on 26 carries (6.9 yards per carry). The passing game was awful, as Painter didn't do anything effective and was even benched for Dan Orlovsky. The play calling was terrible, and Jim Caldwell is getting closer to the hot seat. Things need to change and the Colts need to look at this game, and learn from it, because if they don't it's going to be winless season for the Colts.

    • Same. And Young is underperforming my expectations, even though I didn't have very high expectations.    With Richardson I expected a lot of growing pains and some of that is happening. I expected the flashes of brilliance too. What has surprised me is that those flashes are now becoming not just flashes but waves of brilliance. He's not having just the ocassional "wow" throw. He's having drives, quarters... hell even halves of high level of play. And he's also still throwing everything 100 miles/h and he's sometimes late with some of his throws... and he sails some throws over receivers heads. A lot of this was expected and I feel like to some degree it has been moderated by this coaching staff compared to what he was doing last year. In other words - both the positives and the negatives we saw from last year are still there... but it feels like the positives are more frequent and the negatives are muted a bit.    Overall I feel good about where he is... but he still has a long way to go. If this is the final product, it's not good enough in the long run. But when looking at the progress he's making, how unphases he is with the moment and responsibility, I see no reason to doubt he will continue improving over the next few years. At this point it's up to him, the coaching staff and Ballard(to give him more/better weapons) about where he ends up...(and of course - luck injury-wise).
    • we’re not going to pick high enough to grab a WR1.  If we could then I agree, but the WR group we have right now is not good.  Maybe it will get better, but right now it’s not good.  We have to stop being homers.
    • I’ve said it and I’ll keep saying it.  These receivers are FAILING AR.  We don’t have a receiver out there that can go and get it.  We don’t have a WR1 talent.     Love Pittman, but if it isn’t under 9 yards he’s a ghost.  He should’ve had that long TD if the face mask didn’t happen, but through 4 games I’m not impressed.  Some of y’all are, but I’m not.     Pierce, I thought this dude was going to be catching bombs every game.  But so far he’s caught just ONE.  What a disappointment.   Downs, he’s been solid but not impactful.  He flashes and then defenses double him and that’s that.  But he’s a rookie so he’ll learn to find the open space.  I’m fine with Downs.   Anyone else is not worth mentioning.   The tight end has been surprisingly solid and as discussed in another thread doing better than the receivers.
    • In the rams game alone I counted 6 drops.  I’m pretty there were more.  17/24 sounds A LOT better than 11/24.  And we still lost in OT.  ARs stats doesn’t show his greatness on the field.
    • I will do it later today.
