Helmet to helmet call against the Saints on the FB

Not even going to try and spell that last name lol!

 

That was a unique turn of events where a bunch of things happened, and everybody did everything right at every instance. They’ll still let things slide in the most bang bang situations and they did there, and understandably so. It doesn’t get any more bang bang than that play. It was the biggest moment to that point late in the possibility biggest game of the year. They’d been hitting all game and there they were on a busted play at that point in the game and the guy throws a dart to a blanketed receiver. How is the DB supposed to not hit the guy? Or somewhere in the 1.865 seconds think ok I’ll hit him but I’ll be sure and not hit his head? The refs knew that and correctly didn’t throw the flag.

 

Then he grabbed his head. Then flags flew. Seems unfair but considering what the refs are told to do now above all else, and the consistency that’s expected of them and what the league is trying to do with head injuries they had to throw the flag. Had to. Period. So that’s what they did when he grabbed his head even though they weren’t going to throw the flag until then.

We didn't have the Colts televised here, so we watched this.  Crazy high scores.

It was still actually what I’d call a defensive game. It reminded me of the Packers vs 49ers 1996 game that’s 1 of the best ever imo. It had points but it was what I’d call a defensive game. Today’s game got a little reffed up in the 2nd half and there were a few more big plays but for 3 quarters that’s what it was.

Blanketed? Here he already caught the ball and was falling down.

Instinct made him go low, but in the NFL, that receiver is still in a 'defenseless posture', thus no contact to head or neck area.

Prohibited-

"... forcibly hitting the defenseless player’s head or neck area with the helmet, face mask, forearm, or shoulder, even if the initial contact is lower than the player’s neck, and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him"

 

It's a tough situation but the only avoidance is to not go low and touch the failing player down with hands and fall on him with full body.  He went low and got his helmet and a shoulder into the receivers helmet.  Both no-no's. And yes, the side judge saw it (see below), players reaction wasn't the reason.

The side judge was blowing the whistle and repositioning to see if there was possession because defender then blocked his view. Then as he got a better view, threw a flag at same time as the back judge was throwing his in; and yes the player was clutching his helmet by then. A receiver getting hit in the helmet is going to get a defenseless player penalty call these days unless he has made the transition .  I do Feel bad for the kid (it was his second mess on 3rd downs that drive), but the (safety) rules are there and they're not going away.

 

Not throwing a flag there would definitely NOT be correctly.

No, they were.  They are told to error on the side of safety.  They sometimes throw one when it really wasn't a foul.  The NFL sends out apology letters after the fact.  But they still tell officials if it looked like a foul, call it.  The NFL would rather over call head and neck hits on defenseless players than not.

Trying to hard as always. That was blanketed. A snap shot of the farthest point during a game which was going 100mph doesn’t prove otherwise. That point was still less than a yard anyway. 
 

As for what you apparently expect from the DB, as inappropriate as the comparison may be, it reminds me of the Joe Friday lecture to the kids who didn’t approve of what the policemen did in a split second decision in a situation happening as fast as that game lol!

Still isn't 'low enough' so lowers his helmet/shoulders-

 

 

This will get called every time.  The NFL wants THIS out of the game.  Get used to it.

 

There will be no league apology letter to the Saints on this.

You’re arguing with my own eyes and posting pictures of what my eyes saw for them to see again. That’s not 2 yards and it’s right there. And they didn’t throw the flag until he grabbed his head and they weren’t going to until he grabbed his head for the reason that they always don’t throw them in those cases.

See, this is what is called 'subjective bias'.  I saw the same play/game real time, because I live in SW FL which often get the Bucs on one channel, and Dolphins on the other but they pre-empted Bucs/Colts for Saints/49er's here for some reason. (Shame CBS!!)

 

I Was like 'oh, wow, sorry dude.  First you had a P.I. call on you a few plays ago to extend the drive, now a personal foul on a defenseless receiver' to extend it once more.'

 

You thought opposite.  I don't know, maybe you even thought the P.I. was ticky tack (I did not).

I don't feel that is the case. Nevertheless,  I would be coaching every receiver that gets hit in the head or neck before he can take steps or hit the ground to grab your head when you're on the ground, as soon as you hear the whistle.  Every time.  There's a reason the NFL put the defenseless player stipulations in the rule book.  That play met them, including the foul that was committed.

It’s not subjective, it’s not bias, and it’s not the 2 things combined. I don’t know why you don’t think I didn’t watch the game in just as real a time as you did. I made it very clear that that game was moving 100mph. You don’t come to that conclusion without watching it 1 way - live.
