1000 yard season are irrelevant according to whom?  Still, only 10 or so backs reach that milestone each year, and few backs do it consistently.  I keep saying this...a 3.9 ypc avg is not pedestrian.  Look at the HOF running backs and their career ypc.  You'ld be shocked how many are right around 4 ypc.  A RB who can churn out a consistent 4 ypc is very good, and it is particularly good for the colts, who have had pretty poor run blocking for a couple years.  Long runs?  Blount, Crowell, Howard, Hyde...all were amongst the tops in big plays from scrimmage last year.  None are meaningfully faster than Gore.  Why then could they spring them for big gains?  Look at Gore's highlight films and see how many unblocked defenders he encounters once he gets passed the LOS.  Now look at highlight films for some of these other backs.  Look specifically at 5:09 of this video for Blount:

Every defenders is being blocked at the point of attack, and Blount is sprung for a long TD.  That is what is needed for long runs, and it is something that Hilton, Dorsett and Moncrief are poor at...no RB is going to spring big gains for the colts without help from blockers.

I also recall the highlight video of Michael on this forum showed many of his runs being untouched.

Hmmm...so pointing out a rare mistake by Gore proves your objectivity?  No player is immune to mistakes...Luck makes multiple per game.

A rare mistake that cost us a game and maybe two. That would have been the difference of winning a division and a trip to the playoffs too.

But what the heck, feel free to build him up all you care to.

Maybe this season he can run for more than 3 TDs.

yeah...games always come down to one play. LOL.   Hard for Gore to get rushing TDs when Turbin's in the game (7 TDs on only 47 carries), or the Colts are passing, not running.  Gore had 4 rushing TDs, and tied for second most receiving TDs among RBS with 4.  Between Gore and Turbin they had 16 TDs, which as a tandem, was good.  That's what matters, isn't it?

It matters that the Colts were at the bottom of the league in rushing.

With that said maybe, just maybe the O-line can actually improve but will it be in pass protection or run blocking?

I highly doubt it will be both.

Look, I am not trying to be argumentative with you but till things change the running game will struggle and Gore is a part of that. If it turns out he does play at a decent level I would be happy to say I was wrong.

I been around long enough to know when a RB hits a certain age he normally falls fast.

You said it yourself, Turbin had 7 TDs on 47 carries. Add Mack to the mix and that will take away from Gore. IMO Gore will not be the workhorse anymore.

    • I will take a scene from Rocky 3. 80's and 90's were the best. After Homer gets destroyed by Tatum like Rocky did against Clubber, I walk in and tell Homer, you can't go out like that, we can win the title together like Apollo did. Homer would be like, I don't need this anymore, why you here? I would tell him, you can't pull it off without me because I am the best, you need better training. I am bored but great memories    .   Regarding the Rocky movies, fighters compared to real life fighters by Rolling Stone:   Apollo Creed = Ali Rocky = Rocky Marciano  Clubber = Mike Tyson Drago = Vitali klitchko
    • I would also say that part of the criteria for being put on the practice squad is: how much need is there for the Colts to have someone in that position on the practice squad?  If they have 10 O-linemen fully healthy, starters and backups, then there's little need for a backup swing tackle on the practice squad.  But if they have a rash of injuries, then the need is greater.
    • That's ok.  We can differ in our opinion. And - as an added bonus, we're not that far apart.  You're assessment they are "top 10" and my assessment that they are in the upper range of "average".  That would place them somewhere around 12 or so.  (Assuming average is the middle third of the league). Always good to trade ideas and opinions with you!
    • Honestly, you could probably place AR in both potential and concern depending on your angle. I think the Oline is better than average and at this point I think the Dline is a little overrated.    Our secondary is a big concern to me though.
