The defense already has had to compensate for the losses of linebacker Gary Brackett (shoulder), safety Melvin Bullitt (shoulder) and defensive tackles Eric Foster (ankle) and Drake Nevis (back). All but Nevis are on injured reserve

Sunday's personnel losses contributed to communication and assignment difficulties with the replacements. Temporary "chaos," defensive end Robert Mathis called it.

Quarterback Tom Brady seized the moment, exploited the confusion and drove the Patriots to touchdowns on four consecutive possessions in the middle of the game. Before the defense settled, the Colts trailed 31-3 in the third quarter.

"The next man went down," Mathis said. "You can't do (anything) but keep fighting. This is football and this is what you signed up for."
