Addai's conditioning test was the standard one that every player has to pass before training camp. He had already been signed to the Patriots for over a month before that happened. When players are unrestricted free agents in the off-season they do not typically work out for teams. That is more common amongst street free agents from right before training camp through the regular season. In the case of Saffold, the Raiders saw something they didn't like with his shoulder in their league mandated physical (which any player who is signed or traded must pass) and had reservations about paying him a large sum of money so the team failed him on their physical thus voiding the contract.
