I'm getting old...

It was just yesterday I would sprawl out on the carpet and watch NEW YEARS DAY games on TV ALL Day..  With Dick Enburg and Merlin Olsen doing the Rose Bowl.....       WOW...

The late 70's was a great time for college football.

Late 70's through the mid 80's...I used to cam out in the comfy chair, in my pajamas (til I got older) and sit and munch Jiffy Pop popcorn, drinking Turkey Hill Iced Tea, and watching J.C.Watts, Billy Sims, Earl Campbell, Johnny Rodgers..Listening to Keith Jackson go OH NELLIE when describing a great play...All the iconic coaches like Coach James, Tom Osbourn, Bear Bryant, Joe Paterno, Bo Schembechler, the list goes on and on.

My favorite time was always Thanksgiving day, between Oklahoma and Nebraska,,,Man I miss that rivalry...watch all the games, then sit down to a huge Turkey Dinner..

I relished those times, but even more so now..I look back and think how lucky I was to have seen what I've seen..My first and only college game I ever saw, was in Miami, when #1 Penn State took on #2 Oklahoma..OU started that year with troy Aikman at QB, but got hurt against Vinnie Testeverde and Miami, and lost his job to Jamelle Holloway..I got to meet Keith Jackson the TE, and "The Boz"..I was the only OU fan from Pa..I went on a charter trip with 127 other Penn State fans...The day before the Orange Bowl had an open house..We walked around the stadium, and got kicked off the field when we pretended to actually be playing..Come to think of i..I got the privilege of walking on the Orange Bowl Field...WOW...(sorry having a memory moment)..

But, back to the subject. Don James brought a lot to college football, and will truly be missed by all fans...My condolences to his family..

I love hearing about all these old college FB stories.

My first real memory of college FB was Desmond Howard doing the heisman pose to the Buckeyes. And a few years later Biakabatuka destroyed them also.

    • Another part of the issue is that he has bet on some older TE prospects. Woods, Ogletree, Mallory…all older players.   If you have TE prospects who never really dominated in college and are already 23-25…hard to bank on potential occurring at the highest level. It worked with Doyle, but he’s a bit of an outlier.   Prob better off signing some mid-level FA who is in his mid-late 20s with a known floor than chase potential of a TE already in his mid 20s. Or at least have a combination so there’s a floor. That’s what is really missing from the room…a high floor player.    You also have to actually invest in the position, which typically means multiple Day 2 picks. Ballard didn’t even draft a TE for several years. And the only real draft investment was Woods in R3 and Granson in R4. I go back to that 2021 draft and still can’t understand how he passed on Muth, who was a perfect replacement for Doyle.
    • One of those big heavy winter ski type coats sometime in the late 80's
    • Look, I'm not trying to be arguimentive but Ballard is not a bad GM Irsay is not going to fire Ballard anything soon. Might as well either accept it or continue to whine.
    • My evaluation is irrelevant. I'm just a fan.   But on this forum, I don't see how else we as fans can evaluate the GM without looking at his past successes and failures.
    • How you evaluate a GM and how Jim Irsay evaluates him is on different spectrums. You evaluate strictly on wins and losses, and some owners may put a great emphasis on that, but it’s greatly diminishing the responsibilities of a GM in a multi billion dollar nfl organization.
