Super Bowl 17

I was putzing around at www.pro-football-reference.com and came across the box score for Super Bowl 17.

David Woodley went 4 for 14 for 97 yards, and 76 of those 97 yards came on a TD pass to Jimmy Cefalo.

Don Strock, David's backup, went 0 for 3.

Can you even imagine a football game, let alone a Super Bowl, nowadays, where a team completes 4 passes the entire game?  It just never happens - not even Curtis Painter was that bad!

Joe Theismann threw 23 passes in that game.  John Riggins got 38 carries and his backup Clarence Harmon got 9.  47 runs to 23 passes, a 2 to 1 ratio, doesn't seem horribly outlandish today, though it's probably more common to see teams like the Bills and Chiefs run a 3 to 2 ratio of runs to passes.

I just looked at the AFC Championship game that year between the Dolphins and Jets - Richard Todd went 15 of 37, no TDs, 5 picks, and David Woodley went 9 of 21, no TDs 3 picks - final score 14-0 Dolphins, one rushing TD one defensive TD on an A. J. Duhe interception that I actually remember.

That just doesn't happen today - pretty crazy!

They seem to lose very strangely or incredibly bad.  The 28 point comeback we had against them.  The 2 completion game with Tebow.  Just last night against the Broncos on that hand off to run out the clock and go to overtime.

Two words that explain the Chiefs problems with the clock; Andy Reid.

Poor clock management has been the trademark of Andy Reid's entire career as a head coach. His Super Bowl vs New England, he wasted all 3 timeouts and let the clock run most of the fourth quarter with no sense of urgency whatsoever.

He probably would have finished the Colts off if they just ran the ball and milked the clock instead of the pass, pass, pass offense. This was a big problem for him last year when Jaamal Charles was averaging 5-6 yards a carry, and he opted for Alex Smith to keep throwing it.
