Terrance Mitchell, CB, Oregon

Bottom Line

Wiry, smoother-than-sudden, off-man/cover-3 corner who upped his visibility as a junior by showing improved playmaking ability, which prompted a premature leap to the NFL. Could compete for a job as a No. 4, but lack of ideal explosiveness, top-end speed and bump-and-run ability limits his ceiling.

ESPN.com Scouts Inc has Mitchell as a low 6th round grade.    We maybe looking at Mitchell in the later rounds, or possibly free agent?

Here's the Scouts Inc write-up....

Production 2  2010: Redshirted  2011: (14/12)- 45-10-2  2012: (13/13)- 40-8-0  2013: (13/13)- 59-7-5

Career: 4 FF, 3 TFL

Height-Weight-Speed 4  Height and weight are right on par with five-year Combine average. Fast starter with 1.59 10-split but poor top-end speed with 4.63 40-dash.  Ran slightly faster time of 4.57 in only attempt at Pro Day. Has very small hands (8 ½") and short arms (30 1/8"). Excellent change-of-direction skills.  Among the Combine leaders with 6.57 3-cone, 4.00 20-shuttle and 11.22 60-shuttle

Durability 2  Durable three-year starter. Played in all 40 games (38 starts). In 2014, no lift at combine- medical exclusion left pectoralis. Also pulled right hamstring on first 40-yard dash attempt at Pro Day.

Intangibles 2  Ejected from Nichols State game for 'targeting' sliding QB.  No off-the-field incidents to our knowledge.  Enrolled early at Oregon to participate in 2010 spring practice, but wound up redshirting.  Parents are Terrance and Kepta Mitchell.

1 = Exceptional  2 = Above average  3 = Average  4 = Below average  5 = Marginal

Cornerback Specific Traits

Instincts/Recognition 4  Really struggles with route recognition in man-to-man.   Lots of unnecessary clutching and grabbing when uncertain.  Gets turned around too often.  At his best when play in front of him and can react coming forward.

Cover Skills 3  Vulnerable in man-to-man coverage.  Projects best to a zone-heavy defense.  Quick feet.  Quicker than fast.  Good lateral agility and change-of-direction. But peddle/shuffle needs refining.  Lacks straight-line speed and closing burst when ball in air.  Far too many wasted steps out of pedal (feet outside of frame and gets off-balance). Gives up a lot of late separation.  Will stick with WR initially but either fails to close or will allow WR to out-muscle/box out when ball in air.

Ball Skills 2  Aggressive.  Takes chances.  Does a nice job attacking the ball in front of him. Shows ability to high-point and catch overhead.  Much more physical contesting balls than in run support.  Small hands but has proven production (25 PBU, seven INTs in three seasons).

Run Support 4  Breaks down in space and uses good leverage.  But fails to wrap up too often.  Willingness is adequate but not good.  Gets stuck on too many blocks.  Needs to improve strength.  Does not show physicality on tape that you look for in a traditional cover-2 corner.
