By moving draft day back & not combine , can an increase in injuries occur to rookies

After the combine, it’s only natural for some athletes to take some time off. Pushing the draft back two weeks could mean prospects taking two more weeks off.

Teams can bring prospects in for visits but those rarely involve a workout.

Thus, prospects would become vulnerable to falling out of shape by the May draft. Two weeks of non-conditioning could lead to offseason or training camp injury.

Its plausible to me if  potential Rookies dont know enough to keep in shape to a certain degree at least

  1. Seriously, IMO the NFL is headed for trouble if they implement 18 game schedule. There is no doubt in my mind that more players will get hurt which will open the door for lesser talented guys to replace them. They will have to come from the practice squads or F/A or Canadian Football League, etc, etc. I could see the talent on the field being watered down and the game suffering for it.

OR = Reference to my previous message, the NFL could always increase the number of rounds of the draft which would coincide with them increasing the amount of players on each team in order to compensate for increased schedule. There are always some guys out there who don't get drafted that make teams as walk-ons. These men could get drafted and be in shape and actually make a contribution to their respected team. Just Saying....

"Where pushing the draft back becomes a potential problem for NFL teams is it increases the chances, however slight, of picking the wrong player. "

Not really. If your GM & scouting Dept. knows how to breakdown game tape from an athlete's college days, moving the draft date to May shouldn't matter 1 bit IMO.

Excellent point about walk-ons BTW! They do tend to be in very good shape too because they know that due to a lack of exposure...They can't afford any mistakes etc. like poor mechanics or muscle tone that might easily eliminate them from making a 53 man NFL roster.

They are moving the draft back because that requires football teams to be involved. The NFL and Goodell are still trying to push an 18 game season or an expanded playoff. This move creates room for that.

Yes I posted that in the 1st topic announcing the draft day move with a reference link , but must move all too, league year,   combine etc , all post season activities I read so that gives the extra weeks for a longer schedule but yes in time looks like things just may be headed that way and the NFL is doing it as an evolution so wont appear overnight a total season change

Thats why i difdnt mention that in the article, its just ever so slight a possibility as to be really remote yet that was the article's headline

Another solid point postall2. An 18 game season would leader to a higher frequency injuries across the league with all 32 teams & yes, we would see a rise in CFL players being asked to fill these holes & not necessarily performing their duties with the same level of experience or expertise. The NFL game/integrity would diminish significantly. Well said sir!  Bravo! I never even contemplated this point postall2. Thank you.

Here's what I wanna know: Does increasing the number of regular season games actually put more money in a player's pocket [guaranteed money wise] when the current 10 year CBA runs out? I highly doubt it. Remember: Roger Goodell works for the owners, the guys who actually pay his annual salary & they are blood suckers IMHO. Keep the 16 games season alone & do NOT mess with something that isn't broken...

The NFL as an international sport is a multi-billion dollar business no one involved in this profitable enterprise is scrapping dimes together here or looking for spare change through seat cushions on the couch okay.

18 game season please. Get it done NFL.

Hey House, I do agree that eventually this will probably happen, but I'd be curious for those who want this to elaborate on their justification for it. I promise that I won't slam anybody, especially my friends. I just wanna hear the argument for it. Role playing #101: You're Goodell & I'm a reluctant owner who opposes this idea. Convince me in 5 minutes to flip my position...Go!

haha I have no clue what the owners incentive is other than money, but as a fan I just want to see more football.

I wasn't trying to be confrontational Narcosys. I just want to hear the other side of the argument...Why an 18 game season is a good idea...There is no right or wrong answer here just share with me why you like it or dislike the idea. Thank you.

Yes, a longer season would shorten the NFL fans depression & anger over having football end so quickly. Extending the season pros: Another by week, players get 2 more game checks, more games=more field time to earn more player commercial endorsements, & team locker room chemistry lasts longer. Also, it gives team Dr.s a larger window to performer more player surgeries in if necessary.

Extending the season cons: more injuries =shorter careers, adding more games detracts not enhances the NFL shield, brand, & product, voids on teams due to injury get filled by CFL players & the quality of the game suffers overall, a longer season means a shorter offseason which can ruin locker room chemistry--You need time apart from your teammates man, & less preseason games means that potential starters get released too early simply because they had a poor day on the field.

i knew there was a question in there somewhere haha, but I thought you answered it. I would say yes and no. Yes because it makes he league more money and what can wouldn't want more football. No because it worse for the players. Regardless if they put in 2 bye weeks, it's still tough on hem. If love to see more games but not at the expense of the players and team I love to watch. I mean idk if luck could have taken 2 more games. Plus people like yourself who may be more pecimistic as to why the nfl would be doing this may only get more perturbed with the nfl. As far as playoff expansion and creating 2 more weeks I would hate it. They would have to move to 16 teams atleast and this lets in teams like dolphins and chargers and the panthers and giants from last year. Noone wants to see a 7-9 team in the playoffs. Even if it is a divisional winner.

The real question with the next CBA is blood testing & Human Growth Hormone Screenings/PED detection protocols. Who performs the test? What are the lab techs qualifications? What specifically are they testing for? How frequently is the test given? What about false positives & the appeals process? Another issue for another topic...

The sport of boxing is or has had in the past allegations of doping on a large scale against it by some critics. I applaud the NFL & the NFL PA for wanting to keep professional football clean as a sport.

I like the idea of 18 games. I think having 38% of your schedule decided against your three opponents creates unbalanced circumstances come playoff time. With that said, divisional rivalries create a significant portion of the entertainment involved with football.

    • I've compiled a wardrobe of thoughts, memoirs, and overall emotional debris that is now collected and compounded into something comparable to a rubber band ball- find attached a memoir, a venting, a sigh of relief   ----------------The Colts' Quarterback Quest: A Comedy of Errors----------------   Dear Colts faithful, Let's talk about our journey to find a franchise quarterback. It's been a saga filled with twists, turns, and enough drama to rival a Shakespearean tragedy. After years of waiting and wondering, we finally drafted Anthony Richardson—a quarterback destined to lead us to glory, or so we thought.   But here's the kicker: Richardson might actually end up being a running back. Yes, you read that right. After all the hype, the scouting reports, and the draft day anticipation, we might have inadvertently picked up our next star ball carrier instead of our quarterback savior.   How did we get here, you ask? Well, it's a tale as old as time in Colts Nation. We waited patiently, year after year, for the right moment to strike. We passed on quarterbacks, we shuffled through coaching staffs, and we endured seasons of uncertainty. And just when it seemed like our patience would pay off, we found ourselves scratching our heads yet again.   Now, don't get me wrong. Richardson is undoubtedly talented. He's got speed, agility, and a knack for making plays. But isn't it just our luck that the quarterback we've been waiting for might end up excelling in a different position altogether?   It's almost poetic. The Colts, known for their meticulous planning and strategic moves, find themselves in a situation straight out of a sitcom plot. Are we destined to forever chase the elusive quarterback dream, only to stumble upon a hidden gem in the running back room?   As we ponder this twist of fate, let's remember to laugh through the tears, Colts Nation. After all, football is a game of surprises, and Richardson's unexpected role might just be the plot twist that leads us to unexpected glory. Or at least, that's what we'll keep telling ourselves until the next draft day dilemma.   Here's to hoping Richardson's arm is as strong as his legs, and that our next quarterback isn't hiding in plain sight on the depth chart.   Yours in bemusement, AKB
    • Let's take a moment to appreciate the unconventional journey our team has taken over the past decade. While some may see our .500 record and lack of divisional titles in over 10 years as setbacks, I see them as part of what makes being a Colts fan so special.   Our consistency in maintaining a balanced win-loss ratio shows our resilience and ability to compete year after year. It's not about fleeting glory—it's about building a foundation for sustained success. Chris Ballard's vision for long-term stability is commendable, keeping us competitive while others chase short-term gains.   The coaching changes? They're opportunities for growth and evolution. Each new coach brings fresh ideas and strategies, keeping our opponents guessing and our team adaptable. It's a testament to our commitment to finding the right fit and continually improving.   And let's talk about the draft. Ballard's approach may not always yield immediate superstars, but it's about finding players who fit our system and contribute over the long haul. It's like assembling a puzzle where every piece plays a crucial role in shaping our team's identity.   As for our divisional rivals, they may have their moments of glory, but we're forging our own path. We celebrate their successes because it fuels our determination to rise to the challenge and reclaim our place at the top.   So here's to embracing the Colts' unique journey, Colts Nation! Let's cherish every hard-fought win, every draft pick that adds depth to our roster, and every season that brings us closer to our ultimate goal.   Here's to the next chapter of Colts football and the unwavering passion of our fanbase! Go Colts!
    • Let's have a wager... You summon Matt Pryor, I summon Cherilus. We have them dressed as sumo wrestlers, and we put them on a wrestling mat with baby oil everywhere. Whoever can stand up the longest while leaning on the other man wins.
    • He didn’t sign a gosder cherilus, so he’s got that going for him.
