2012 Veteran Contracts Over $1 Million are analyzed including these stats & various scenarios

Player Name

2012 Base Salary ----

2012 Cap Number --

Signed Through

2012 Savings If Cut

Dead Money

DISCUSSED ARE

Dwight Freeney

Peyton Manning

Dallas Clark

Gary Brackett

Antoine Bethea

Joseph Addai

Melvin Bullitt

Adam Vinatieri

Jerry Hughes

Donald Brown

Antonio Johnson

Zac Diles

Justin Snow

Fili Moala

Much MORE Analysis to article,Heres 1 example

There are 6 veterans still under contract in 2012 who, if cut, could free up over $1 million in cap space next season. The outlier is Dwight Freeney, who would free up just over $14MM in cap room. On the other end of the spectrum, Zac Diles is set to receive $1MM in 2012 but cutting him does not carry a penalty, meaning that the team can save $1MM straight out if they wish.

.

The four remaining veterans are Dallas Clark, Joseph Addai, Melvin Bullitt, and Antoine Bethea. All four players are under contract through 2013

.

Cutting players like Clark, Addai, and Bullitt is possible but with the three contract exemptions available to the Colts, the team could save more money against the cap by using the exemptions in 2012 than they would actually save if they cut the players. In short, the only reason to cut Clark, Addai, or Bullitt (from a financial standpoint only) is to clear them from the books in 2013.

Very interesting stuff, bayone

This helps a lot..and its Grigson's first task...

We've got to let some folks go

Cutting Gary Brackett saves virtually nothing....so you might as well keep him...

Bethea is needed...

Joe Addai may go....Bullitt and Dallas Clark might, too...

..and Freeney, in the final year of his contract,

You obvioulsy have to restructure his deal to cut that cap hit in half.

Can that be don e?

Good questions, oldunclemark. It also raises some points to the level of just how little the average fan knows about the cap and what can be done to move/free up money.

Agree, I sure dont know enough to comment on

Can that be done?

But maybe if somehow u extend it and restructure it or somehow do something with salary onto a bonus but without extension then cant carry that out over a few years

.

Really its all beyond my pay grade ( LOL )

OOM, you cannot restructure a contract in the final year. You can extend a player and push the money back that way, but in the final year of a contract there is no more years to push the money back or spread it out. We are pretty much going to take Freeney's cap ht on the chin or some how extend him and spread the cap hit out.

We are going to be stuck with Brackett for some time. The big question with him is what do you do with him. Do you really push the younger and more explosive player back outside for an aging vet who got out shined by the younger version?

i figure you have him for depth. neither brackett nor angerer are likely to play all season with no injury downtime... so i vote both inside.

I would use Brackett inside and Angerer outside...to get both of them on the field....

If you extend Freeney..which the Colts probably want to do anyway...

..do you lessen the cap hit for THIS Year..

..because Freeney's money is weighing us down far more than Mannings

Pending how its structured , most definitely yes but again, i am no expert

The thing with Angerer and Brackett is that Angerer has shown he is much much better at MLB then he is at OLB. Will Brackett's play be high enough to move Angerer back outside where he is just not as good at.

I am no cap expert, you would have to ask someone like Bav, but you cannot really make money go away. I am sure there could be some ways to spread the cap hit out over the life of the new contract or convert money into a bonus or something. Ultimately we are still going to take a nice hit for Freeney.

Nice post, very good info in there!

IMO Colts absoloutley 100% need to cut Freeney, opposing teams gameplan is always to pound the ball at our D, specificly at his side. His only value is when we have a lead and closing a game, which in 2011 was no value at all. Could save 14,035,000 on the 2012 cap, hewould count for 5mil against the cap if cut instead of the 19mil against the cap if retained. On that note makes 0 sence to release Peyton before march 8 or ever, as he would count at minimum 16 mil against the cap to not play for us this year.

Also I think some of you missed some things in there, cutting Bracket makes a TON of sense, "Cutting Gary Brackett makes sense for the franchise because large sums of money will be saved in 2013 and 2014, to the tune of approximately $7MM a year. Cutting him prior to 2012, of course, does very little to save cap room immediately." Same for Bullit.

Not sure if we should cut him but let me say your reasoning is valid in sense one reason that helped this years cap was cutting Hayden last year to save cap this year, just like u suggest for brackett, so precedent is set already

He adds good depth though
