The Peyton Predicament By Andrew Brandt: Can The Colts Afford To Keep Peyton?

Yes, and what we don't know is what influence Polian had in steering Irsay to agree to this contract.

We all assume Polian was fired because of the 2-14 season, and not having the foresight to have adequate backups to PM.

Another possibility is Polian's role in supporting this contract.

It could be a factor. It could have been set up far worse, but it could have been set up better too. Though it was Irsay always tooting the "Peyton will be the highest paid player horn" and not Polian or Peyton.

Yes, I can think up of one structure that would be far worse right off the bat.......$48 signing bonus, no option bonus.

I can also think up of one structure that would be far better....annual options.

You have to remember that this current contract was engineered by Polian et al., who are no longer with the team.

We don't know how much trust Irsay had in Polian, or how much Irsay was involved in the detailed negotiations.

I'll look for the quote but it came out of Peyton's mouth that he and Irsay sat down and put together the major aspects of this contract, meaning Irsay knew what he was doing when it was signed, what Irsay didn't anticipate was another surgery right before the season started.

If this is the case, I am seriously downgrading Irsay's contracting skills, and hope that Grigson brings more skill to the table here.

Unfortunately, the most sensible outcome is not the one that necessarily happens.

I expect a surprise in all this drama, with Irsay and Manning agreeing to a new contract. Both of these men are far from normal in their desires.

I do not expect any surprises. I expect that the parties will not be able to come to agreement and part their separate ways, for all the reasons mentioned in the 4 articles cited above.
