  1. he needs to work on route tree as much or more than blocking.

he's a true project in both those areas.

that said, he's a special talent in all the things he already knows how to do.

very high ceiling, and i'm not that concerned about his willingness or ability to work hard and learn the other things.

I had to think long and hard on this one because I liked our draft but I will still stick with 11-5. I have high expectations as everyone should but not 100% sold that we will win 12 or 13 games and go to the SB. I have us making the AFC Title Game, and I still say the Saints is the game we will most likely lose. The Chargers and Chiefs are a close 2nd. If the Chiefs game was here I would pick us in that game. I still have us 5-1 in the division.

    I voted:

    11-5

    Lose to Saints

    Loss in Conference Championship

i had us beating the Chiefs barely last poll (i was on the fence), but now totally off the fence and confident we win.

after pre-season, if Cain looks like he's fully back, and campbell looks like the real deal, i could easily see us us winning 13 or more now that we have ware for short yardage situations.

Great value. RBs are so devalued it's not even funny.

Won't take it to the house of juke any one's jock off, but is patient and will hit the hole hard.

Not many will be arm tackle this guy. He's like a bowling ball, and is exactly what we needed in a power back. If he can keep his weight in check and keep away from the smokey smoke, he's going to have a great year punishing tacklers.

Our power success rank (Percentage of runs on third or fourth down, two yards or less to go, that achieved a first down or touchdown. Also includes runs on first-and-goal or second-and-goal from the two-yard line or closer.) was 28th last year out of 32 teams. I'd bet we'll easily be top 15 this year.

IDK I feel like people say that about every player who starts.

Honestly, not sure why so many folks are that down on Walker. He's not Lenard, but was 2nd in tackles for the Colts, with far less snaps than Leonard.

Leonard played 91.3% of snaps and led the team with 163Ts and 12TFLs.

Walker played 66.3% of snaps and was second with 105Ts and 10TFLs.

If you normalize on snaps, Walker would have had 144Ts and 14TFLs.

Pretty decent if you rightfully believe Leonard is a stud.

I was thinking more about the depth chart that the team releases and who they decide to cut.

During the offseason, people have traditionally expected the WRs to be labeled 1,2,3,4,5, etc. and players have to work their way up into the top 5/6 to stay on the team.

But like you said, so many guys do so many different things, how do they rank them in the depth chart and how do they decide who to cut?

IIRC, Indy only list two WR lanes on their depth chart, and 2 TE lanes. We're in 3 WR sets a lot more than 2 TE sets, so not sure why. They typically list the Xs in one lane, and Zs and slot in the 2nd.

I'd just stay away from WR1,2,3 etc. unless you are talking about pure production or snap counts.

For instance, we all know who is our WR1. But who was 2 and 3? Rogers actually had the second most yards and snaps last season?

I can assure you though, while Os differ from team to team and scheme to scheme, Indy looks at it as X, Z, and Slot. It's just a way teams stack them for consistency sake going down to college, HS, and even little league lol. But sure, all Os are a little different, and some don't fit perfectly into a slot.

  7. 3 minutes ago, Hoose said:

In that regard, he does remind me of Sproles, who is not an every down back but can be used to shake it up here and there carrying the ball. He is the modern gadget man who can run the ball, play out of the slot, go in motion, pull off a jet sweep, etc. I love the guy, and he will have a positive, important impact within the Colts offense next season. He might just get over the fumbleitis on ko/punt returns and take Rogers' spot. That would make him a total Sproles clone.

i'd love to see Hines, Campbell, and Dulin (UDFA) all get a shot at returns.

    Best hands win!

Chuckle. They are all 2-3 year projects.

I think Okereke is a solid add, and will see time early in passing downs. he'll definitely help in short coverage vs TEs. But I agree, he's either a couple years project (get him some S&C), or simply a scheme add.

I think Walker should be very proud of his play once our D settled into their roles.
He will likely be pulled often in sure passing situations once a faster player proves himself.
And that could be Geathers early in the season.
CB and staff went after the big weakness at LB. They just don't miss much.

One more solid add for the interior DLine and Boogity Boogity Boogity.

Agree. Walker did pretty decent once the team started to absorb Eberflus's D. He'll likely never be a pro bowl guy, but as along as he's solid on early downs, i'm more than fine with him. I do think we'll see him improve this year.

Nowhere did he make that comparison. I think some people hang around here just to pick a fight.

Look, he's the one that felt the need to dispute my post to begin with. Then he had to throw in the "reading is fundamental" jab. if anyone was poking, it was not me.

my opinion, not that it matters, is shared by NFL.com's analyst, and a lot that talked about okereke. in short, i'm not the one making bold statement and invoking all-pro players.

i also follow stanford pretty close being a ND junkie, so i'm more aware of what he does well and what he struggles with, than the typical fan. i even remember ND trying to get him on campus prior to him committing to the tree.

Well said. And again, it bears repeating: he was a ROOKIE. I look for even bigger things from him this year and his being a vital piece of a diverse and creative offense.

yup, tremendous first year. i doubt he'll ever be a Kamara, McCaffrey, or Barkley, but he's a great 3-5th option who has great wheels. i hated when he started a couple games early when mack was down. he's not meant for every down use. if they use himevery once in a while on 2nd down and long, and obvious passing downs, he'll get his no doubt.

I like having Hines as an outlet player on the field. Defense has to account for him as a runner or a pass Cather and the OC building plays has to be giddy with all the potential options and formations with all these guys. I wonder what signing Ware means for Wilkins on the team. No way do we keep 5. Decide after PS games I suppose.

I think signing ware has more impact to Williams than Wilkins. Wilkins is a pretty decent every down back up for mack and had a good ypc average. if mack goes down, i'd rather have wilkins filling in, than increasing ware's snaps. i'd prefer to keep ware as the primary short yardage back, and back that comes in late to punish DLs and LBs that are worn down.

I did compare builds - literally in all 4 responses.

Then used common sense in explaining the MIKE is speed based and not size based and used two of the bests names who played the Tampa 2 with speed as examples.

Would you have preferred that I listed Gary Brackett (5'11" & 235) or Jerrell Freeman (6'0" & 236) instead?

Again, Walker is 6'1" and 242.......Okereke is 6'1" and 239. Three (3) pounds is not a huge difference.

height and weight are not the end all be all of "build". build is how it is proportioned.

here's the NFL.com's draft notes on both.

    Quote

    Okereke

Undersized but instinctive and rangy, Okerke plays fast and is generally on the right track with his initial reads and response to play development. While he's fairly sound from a technical standpoint, his lack of size and strength shows up in both tackling and downhill duties against blockers. He has adequate talent to drop and cover in space and his experience on special teams gives him a shot to become a quality NFL backup.

    Weaknesses

    Undersized as inside linebacker

Below-average base to maintain contact balance

    Quote

    Walker

Carries NFL thickness throughout his frame. Adequate straight-line pursuit speed. Flashes burst gear to close out runners looking to get the corner. Smart player with excellent work ethic. Considered a great teammate and leader. Instinctive downhill runner, and productive. Always looking to play tackles near the line of scrimmage. Works around second-level blocks with limp inside shoulder and upper body turn, causing blockers to miss the target and fall forward. Able to adjust path to the ball in space. Instinctive with good peripheral vision. Outstanding field awareness. Urgent helper on wide receiver screens and hitches. Plays with balanced eyes in coverage, darting between his coverage area and the quarterback's eyes. Crowds target in his area, but willing to come off and hustle to a passing lane if he reads pass. Has 16 passes defensed over his three years.

Has packed muscle onto his frame that looks good in the uniform but might be limiting his flexibility and athletic ability. A productive, downhill linebacker who misses too many tackles and struggles as a take-on player. He checks all the desired boxes for football and personal character and can be counted on to do what it takes to improve his game. He could become a decent starting linebacker within his first few years.

I compared Walker's size to Okereke's size since you said he was too light.....

I added in Nickerson and Urlacher for historical purposes about size/speed.

common sense is fundamental. don't toss out names like urlacher when talking about walker and okereke.

like i said, compare their builds.

and luck is 240. perhaps he can compete at MLB?

How? We just spent on Ebron and ut was just 5 mil a year. Im not willing to give up on AC without having a proper replacement. I am not messing with this line.

look at any of the contract sites on TE. it'll vary by site as we got a break on doyle's IR. we're 3rd for 2019. Ebron was 6.75M, Doyle was 5.3M due to IR.

nobody is saying give up on AC, but i'd bet a lot that we take an OT early next year.

    Walker was a 5th round pick.....Okereke was a 3rd round pick.

    Walker weighs 242

    Okereke weighs 239

That was the comparison that you started.

I simply went back in history to point out speed was a bigger characteristic than size in good Tampa 2 defenses at linebacker.

you compared okereke to  Urlacher. that's a non starter.

not saying waker is a long term answer, but do me a favor, compare the build of both and you'll see the difference especially in the lower body. walker has a lot of thickness that okereke does not.

    There isn't much difference between 6'1" and 242 and 6'1" and 239....

Besides the Tampa 2 was never about a thumper in the middle. Hardy Nickerson for Tampa and Urlacher were the best MIKES but even at Urlacher's size he was still more speed based than a true thumper.

Okereke will be just fine in the middle at 239 lbs.

you're comparing a top 10 first round pro bowl guy to Okereke...

If Ebron and Moore ball out again, their gonna want long term contracts and we still don't have another option at LT

we spent more on TE last year than anyone. IMO, doyle is not coming back, which will free up cash. funchess is a long shot IMO too. AC and LT will be addressed in next year's draft. sheard, farley, and rogers will be fighting for their jobs this year. vinny will likely be retire.

if you look at our FAs for 2020, it's not that big of a deal given what we have secured longer term and what we'll likely draft next year.

  18. i can see him playing a lot in vs pass heavy Os, but he's a little to undersized for me to think he'll play against good running teams. IMO we'll see him in passing downs as a norm. he'll have a lot to prove before he plays early downs vs good rushing teams.

You do realize we have a lot of players to re-sign next offseason right? AC, Kenny Moore, Ebron, Doyle, Funchess if he pans out

we're also forecasted to have top 10 salary cap room next year too. i agree though we're not going to spend money just to spend money (long term). but... we have plenty to spend on a 1 or 2 year deal.

How do you know Banogu isn't that guy? You can't. People were saying the exact same crap about Leonard and he became an absolute stud. What if the guy they take next year is another stud? What if we compete seriously for the SB this season and use that extra pick to climb up and take that player to get us over the top? Next year's draft makes this one look silly. This was the most top heavy draft I can remember, honestly, in my lifetime. People said the value was in the 2nd and 3rd because they were essentially all graded the same after the top 12-15 guys. Khari Willis, a guy graded in the 4th/5th round scored an 87 on either PFF or NFL.com (can't remember which), the same as guys going 2-3 rounds ahead of him. Next year, the cream should rise higher than 10 dudes, and we'll get at least 2, maybe 3, of those guys. Maybe 2 in the first of they play it right. After watching that Colts Productions video, I can't even begin to question that group right now haha, I'm all the way on board! In Ballard I trust.

We don't know if Banogu was or wasn't the guy. We just know that he was one of the "underlined" guys which I'm sure there were plenty. We can probably glean from the vid that they were happy to trade back all along.

  21. Loved the vid. Great production. Doesn't really give us any insight though to the secret sauce. We saw exactly what they wanted us to see. Sure they got their guys, but a lot of guys I'm sure were "underlined". I'm sure there was a lot more debate and discussion than what was shown. I could only really take two things from it. 1) they were happy to trade back from the first all along (which tells me even their "8" was not a serious eight), and 2) they had planed on a CB and WR early all along.
