Will see but I just don't see it happening but if Ballard really believes there a need there and if the price is something he feels comfortable with then maybe. If he really believes Suh could put us over the top maybe he pulls the trigger but I'm not holding my breath.

I agree it's a long shot. And none of us know the behind the scenes current opinion of Suh.

But... few on here would have believed Ballard would pay 10M for a FA WR, and then draft another in the early rounds. His actions didn't exactly support some of his comments on the WR position.

I personally think it's possible (not necessarily Suh, but iDL in general) because 1) just about every talking head listed iDL as our biggest need (and I agree does the majority of the board via polls), and 2) we have the cap room.

I agree I don't how he could fit in our locker room. I really don't see any way in hell this happens he's not a Ballard guy at all.

We haven't heard a peep out of him (bad things) in several years.

Ballard brought in Kelly, was point person on, and drafted Hill (at KC), and even was quoted in an article lately that talked about a player with flags that they took (can't remember, but was posted in here somewhere).

If LAR coaches don't have negatives to say (and Ballard would know), it's all about the interview.

This, with Suh you just can't look at stats. What he does is, is opens things up for players around him because 1 person normally can't handle him.

    yup.

and i meant to say he won't want a 1 year prove it deal. i bet he'd reduce his yearly for a 2 year if it was fairly loaded.

  4. @CR91 nice one. pretty close to what i would pick.

like @DougDew said, pretty sure Tell will start as a sub package CB.

I think Farley will be there if he's healthy.

I think you're spot on with 9 OL if everyone's healthy to start the year

    just small nits...

    1) Doubt Hart makes it. Just too slow, and doesn't bring enough unique talent.

    2) I'd throw Dulin on the PS just because of the upside and return skills

    3) I only think we keep 3TEs on the 53 if Doyle is healthy, but I can see Hentges on the PS

    4) coin flip, but if Fountain improved (supposedly he's been killing it this off season training with a coach), I could see him flip flopping with Pascal

    5) wouldn't be shocked to see Ya-sin starting in the first half of the season. I'm calling a week 3 INT for him as his coming out.

I think he will make significantly less this year than he did last year.  I think he will get a one year prove it deal somewhere though.  He knows the criticisms of him, supposedly a dirty player, didnt play his hardest last year, and had a down year.  That being said, there is no doubt in my mind that he is passionate about the game.  He has never missed a game or start.  Last year, I think the numbers were down because he he other elite D lineman around him.  I think he will get a lesser contract, which will humble him and make him want to come out and prove that he still has enough left in his tank to be an important defensive player for a few more years.  I would like to see the Colts give him that chance.  Yes, stopping the run may not be as important as it has been in years to come, but we don't have many others gaps on either side of the ball.  Even the best teams are still always looking to get better, so why not try to improve.

I wouldn't call it a down year. Having him there is likely a big part of why Donald got 20.5 sacks last year. His stats from year to year are up and down over his 9 years. His AV last year was higher than his year 2, and the same as year 6 and 8.

He's likely looking for a multiyear deal. Doubt he'll want a prove it one year at his age. I'd guess his min is 2 years. If he's holding on to 14M a year, he's likely going to be waiting a while lol. Predicting he'll get a 2 year 10M/year contract. Maybe more from a desperate team. I'd take him 2 years at 10M/y given our cap space.

Out of those listed, I think Parris will have the most.

My stack for most TDs is

    1. Mack - he's going to benefit from 1) 2nd year OL, and 2) improved WR play

    2. TY - He's going to love that teams can't double him this year

    3. Campbell - he's the one WR that should play really well between the 20s and in the RZ

    4. Ebron - he'll lose production due to Funchess

    5. Funchess - he'll be close to Ebron, but Luck will remember his favorite from last year.

Cain is a wildcard. If he's fully healthy and ready by camp, I could see him anywhere from 2 to 4. I could also see Hines taking a nice step forward after a 700+ APyard rookie season.

  7. So to compare how he graded teams last year at the same time of the year (link below),  their total O rank at season's end, and projected rank this year,,

    2018 Projected Rank / Actual 2018 Total O Rank / 2019 Projected Rank

    1. Saints / 8th / 1st again...

    2. Pats / 5th / NR

    3. Steelers / 4th / 9th

    4. Falcons / 6th / 4th

    5. Chargers / 11th / 8th

    6. Packers / 12th / 10th

    7. Eagles / 14th / 3rd

    8. Rams / 2nd / 5th

    9. Vikings / 20th / NR

    10. Lions / 24th / NR

Missed the boat on KC who was 1st last year, and the Vikings and Lions.....

His confidence dropped this year on the Pats, Steelers. He's very high on the Eagles this year... meh... Colts are the biggest movers up, with the Browns advancing too.

    In short, grain of salt..

You really think they would have left Rogers in in TY's spot if TY had been out for any lengthy period?  Maybe, but I don't think that would necessarily mean they thought of him as a clearly better option in that scenraio than any other WR on the roster...

Not sure who else you'd put at Z, that wasn't a developmental guy. Pascal and Inman were both Xs who played a little slot. I don't think anyone else logged minutes at Z except TY and Rogers. Because of all the motion required for the Z, it's probably the hardest WR position to be good at given you have to run great routes, but also know all the motion sets.

And the closest in size (not that you have to have a short guy at Z) was Johnson, and he was playing behind Alshon Jefferies (6-3) out wide before he came to the Colts. I know the Colts were trying to use him in the slot too, just not sure if they had him practicing any Z routes. He did play week 6 when TY was out, but though he was in slot, and Rogers was Z.

no, im not saying 7 is bad, sub-7's are really ideal, top-notch.  Renfro Boykin, Morgan type numbers.

Sure it'd be great if can improve, but there's plenty of WRs in the top 10 in yards with 7.0s or greater. I'm perfectly happy with top 10 at position.

And comparing the other guys for instance....

As a huge ND fan, Boykin did not play game fast up to his 40 and 3CD times. That may have been a product of his QB and routes, but on tape he's not getting a ton of separation out wide. Boykin is about the same 40 as Dulin though, but I think he takes longer (long strider) to get up to speed.

Refro is shifty in the slot, but he's not fast at all. He's 4.59 on the 40. Definition of quicker than fast. He was reliable as hell though.

what's his 40? nevermind, found it, it's a 4.43, and a 7.0 on 3-cone.  liked to see his 3-cone go way down, i wonder if he slipped or anything?  Very similar to Daurice Fountain although DF could jump to the moon.

??? 7.0 puts him in the top 10 of combine WRs

Faster than Deebo, McLaurin, Harmon, Ridley, Metcalf, etc.. only .05 off of Isabella.

You thinking of another agility drill?

  11. 5 minutes ago, chrisfarley said:

actually i'm saying I like it.  Colts need some nasty, first we got Nelson, who's atomic sauce, now we could use some nuclear sauce in Suh for a year or two before he hangs up the cleats.  Siragusa, yea, lol miss that guy.  Gannon doesn't however.......

I think there's a difference between "nasty" and "dirty".

Q is nasty, not dirty. Suh is, or was both.

But, yes, we need all the NASTY

Pay particular attention to QB Hits.  If there's one thing he has been, it's consistent. Also, pretty much has started every game for all teams. (Disclaimer: I'm sure this has been posted ad nauseam but is specific to this thread)

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SuhxNd99.htm

and his Ts too. Last year he had his 4th best year, better than the year before, and better than 4 out of his first 5 years.

Isabella's overall tape is much better.  I prefer Fountain's overall tape to Hart's as well.

Unless there are injuries, it seems the ship has sailed on Inman.  I just went back and watched some of the late season games.  It's hard to believe there is no place for Inman on this team.  Every team needs a few steady and reliable lunch pail-type vets IMO.  You can go overboard with the whole targeting athletic freaks thing.

Yup, Isabella's overall tape and production are light years ahead of Hart's. I like Fountain as a project long term over Hart as well. He has much better measurables.

Crowded WR room, especially at X. But really if you consider all the back up needs (those that can move around), return needs, and those you know we aren't getting rid of, I just don't see room for Inman.

    Z -

TY - He's the only pure Z we had last year. Rogers was his only back up. Parris could factor

    Slot

Rogers - also return guy. Was second if WR yards last year and backed up TY. Does a lot.

Campbell - not sure if he'll start out here purely, or be able to shift like Rogers to Z

    X

Cain - you don't make recovery pump it up vids for someone that you plan to drop. PUP?

Funchess - spent too much to drop. Will play "big slot" too

Those are probably the 5 that are locks. I'm guessing we carry 6 on the 53 this year, and at least one on the practice squad, maybe even 2.

IMO, you have these guys remaining. Listing Inman just because we're talking about him

Inman - X and a little slot. Was reliable, not spectacular, good guy, but aging.

Pascal - X and a little slot. Did well last year while in. Younger project.

Vesay - X and maybe slot.

    Johnson - could project anywhere

Ismael - X and maybe slot

Hoagan - X and maybe slot

Hart - Slot or slow Z, return

Fountain - could project anywhere but likely X

Dulin - Z or slot, and return

I'm going to bet on Pascal, Fountain, and perhaps Dulin (mainly for returns). Maybe Hart (if he's much quicker than fast), and Johnson if he's improved. Way too many X types still on board.

  14. 12 hours ago, Matthew Gilbert said:

Yea that was kind of my point. It's certainly a good situation to be in but it stinks at the same time. I feel like guys from our practice squad will be getting plucked this year.

Better to have a practice squad that folks want, than one nobody wants to touch. Just means the team is getting better. I think we'll hide development folks there so that teams know little about them. It's a shell game.

I don't see what others see in Rogers here. I think he is extremely replaceable... he's OK if he's your 5th-6th receiver, but you will always be looking for an upgrade if he's anything more for you and that's exactly what Ballard did - he drafted an elusive slot in the second and paid 8 figured for a big slot/big X in Free agency...Ballard is telling you what he thinks of our receiver corps from last year and Rogers specifically by the type of players he acquired...

Not saying he's better than a 5th or 6th, but he was the only Z back up for TY last year, and was a return guy. And Rogers took a very nice step forward last year from 2017. I think it's a year early for moving off him.

  16. I'm gonna go with:

    3 Pure ST

    Punter

    Kicker

    LS

    24 Offense

    QB - 2

RB - 4 (they make good special teams too)

    WR - 6 (return game)

    TEs - 3

OL - 9 (or 10 depending on injury and how good the drafted OL are doing)

26 Defense (or 25 if we keep 10 OL)

    DL - 9

LB - 7 (good on STs)

DB - 10 (good on STs)

Because of our scheme, I could see + or - one fluctuations between DL and LB (the OLB/DE tweeners), and LB and DB (coverage sub packages).

And why Suh? Because most think/thought iDL was our biggest need pre draft, and it still is since we didn't draft. It's not just because of our cap space. Doesn't have to be Suh, but he's the best iDL left.

  17. we have around 10ish I think FAs for 2020 that are currently making 3M+. In 2021 there's a few big ones like TY, and a few others, but also Ballard's first class will be up for non-rookie contracts (like Mack, Hooker, etc..).

We have 58.8M currently (still leading the NFL) for 2019, and 87.6M for 2020 as it stands today (still leading the NFL).

He started 13 games as a junior and 15 as a senior (as a team 'permanent' team captain).  Bama has always had a run-heavy offense and he was used primarily as a blocker and in red-zone receiving situations (about 50% of his receptions were TDs).

He played quite a lot, but they just utilized Irv Smith Jr. as their WR/TE hybrid guy and kept Hentges in a mostly blocking role.

Time will tell what he's actually made of, but I'm kind of high on the guy as a UDFA (we aren't expecting much from a UDFA anyway, but if he could come in and become our next Doyle in a couple years, it'd be very sweet).

I'd love it if worked out. We were a top spender on TEs last year, but got a little cap break because of Doyle's injury I think. I'd prefer not to sign both Ebron and Doyle to big contracts as we're going to have to spend some dollars over the next few years locking up others. Would love to have Ebron on a 3 or 4 year deal, and some up and comer on a cheap rookie contract.

  19. Best Pick: Campbell, but I think RYS will do great things too after his rawness is polished.

    Worst Pick: Patterson

    Sleeper Pick: Tell

Wish they could’ve got: If we're wishing, Q Williams or Ed Oliver.

    Can’t believe they passed on:

    Real time what was available...

    26 - Sweat and Tiller

34 - A bit surprised they didn't go with an OT (Taylor, Little, Ford)

    49 - WR AJ Brown

    59 - S Rapp or Thornhill

    89 - S SJG or CB Love

    109 - S Hooker or RB Snell

    144 - CB Oruwariye

    164 - LB Walker

199 - CB Jordan Brown or WR Harmon

UDFA to Watch: Dulin (Colts). Alex Barr (Bears). Siavon Smith (Jags). Preston Williams (Dolphins). Damarkus Lodge (TB).

Draft Grade: C+ trending to B.

Yes, Doyle was more productive in college as a WR but he also played at Western Kentucky on a team with nowhere near the receiving depth as Alabama.  Hengtes started 13 games as a junior and 3 of his 7 receptions were TDs.  He was named team captain as a senior and started 15 games, with 3 of 4 receptions for TDs.  He is said to have good hands, he just was used primarily as a blocker whereas Irv Smith Jr. was their receiving TE.

You're probably right that he needs some refinement as a receiver... but to start on Alabama full-time for 2 years is saying something.  I am not totally sold on him making the team, he just reminds me a lot of Doyle and I imagine even if we have to stash him on the PS for a year or two and learn from Doyle and others that he can develop into a similar player as Doyle in the NFL (I don't think Doyle had more than 12 catches and was rarely used as a receiver his first 3 years before breaking out with 59 catches his 4th year).

I agree for the most part. If I knew their thoughts on the other TEs like MAC, and the 4 others not named Doyle or Ebron, I might have a better feel.

What I do love, is that if he was recruited by Bama, and was ranked the 3rd best TE in his class. Had a great offer list. Wouldn't be shocked if he was a diamond, just think he'd have played more at Bama had he been a stud.

But I DO find it interesting,  even funny,  that you're telling someone else not to be so adamant.

Really,  if that aint the pot calling the kettle....

I'm adamant on things were stats and facts provide logic/reason for a particular topic.

Not adamant at all on things like this. Like your thread saying you got Ballard all wrong, trying to predict what he may do is just darts at a board. Just like paying a lot for a one year deal on a FA WR, then drafting another one in the early rounds. I think a lot of folks thought just the opposite.

Personally I can only predict need, not what goes on in Ballard or Reich's head. Ballard only has two years as a shot caller, and you can only glean so much from his prior rolls where the boss made the calls.
