Don't see Ballard spending big money to bring in any more big names...

Not Suh...   or McCoy.....     or Berry....

Ballard wants to play the kids....

We might still bring in some smaller names who play a small but important roll on the team....   but I don't see the big names coming our way....

Sports websites play connect the dots because they see big name guys who want more money with the fact that the Colts have money to spend.    They honestly don't know and/or understand what Ballard is doing.     We had these kind of stories last year.    And we will have them next year too.

    Not happening......

I wouldn't be do adamant. Predictions on the draft for most were very far off.

I wouldn't be surprised either way. Guess we'll likely know later this week.

We were 13th in average punt returns.  There’s always room for improvement at any position but Rogers was decent there.

We are going to lose at least one or two decent WRs come cutdown day.  Going to be a fun position to watch!

Not calling for Rogers to be cut at all. Pretty sure he'll make it given his improvement last year, and that he's a returner and the only Z back up we had last year.

    Need to improve KRs regardless.

He just reminds me a whole lot of Doyle coming out of college.... Doyle was basically a back-up and a grinder (getting by on grit moreso than athletics) used for situational blocking/STs for his first 3 years in the league (after being a UDFA) before breaking out in year 4 as a complete TE.   Seems to me like Hentges has a good role model, even if he needs a year or 2 on practice squad.

Pretty sure Doyle was a starter his JR and SR year and had a fair amount of yardage those two year (IIRC he had injury issues back then too). Not saying Hentges can do it, I just think he's very limited. Put me in the column signing Ebron next year to a 3 year deal, and either rolling with one of the already signed TEs, or drafting one 2nd to 4th rounds. I do want a guy who's decent at blocking, just want someone who's a little more polished receiver.

I'm still not totally optimistic Doyle will be 100% come the start of this season.  I do think that Hale Hentges, the UDFA from 'Bama is about as close to a Doyle clone as you could get (Doyle is about 5 pounds heavier and 1-2 inches taller).  But Hentges specializes in blocking and can be a reliable receiver in short yardage situations if needed.  Both guys seem to get by more on work-ethic and toughness than pure athleticism... If Hentges makes the team, I see him almost as Doyle Version 2.0 (it may take him a year or 2 to get up to par in the passing game).

I do agree though, if Cain and TY can stay healthy, if Funchess lives up to his hype/contract, and if Campbell can adjust to the NFL game -- I think we'll see a lot of creativity on offense (a lot of ifs, I know -- but let's be optimistic here -- it's a much different WR corps than we've seen in a while and can be dangerous -- and a lot of teams should struggle body-ing up against both Ebron and Funchess in certain packages).

The nice thing is, with Andrew and his weapons, we can move the ball through the air if we need.  With Big Q and the OL growing another year together, we should be able to run the ball down people's throats if we need to, as well.

This is the most exciting off-season in quite some time (IMO).

yup, haven't been the excited in a long time. i guarantee Luck is excited.

not high on Hentges making the team at all. way to slow. good blocker though, even if he strength scores were pretty bad. i just think we'll find another guy who is faster, that's also a decent blocker.

If you listen to Ballard in the post-draft press conference he said the following (maybe not in this order or exact quotes, but close enough): (1) He expects Grover Stewart to make a big leap this year, (2) He thinks Hunt and Autry are very good in this defense, (3) Expect Tyquan Lewis to play on the inside more (I think he/Autry/maybe Ward will be counted on as our interior pass-rush, (4) Jihad Ward was playing very good ball until he got hurt......

He genuinely seemed to think we were good on the DL (but then of course, I'm sure he's not going to get up there and say "Grover Stewart's a bust who won't develop, etc.").  I think Jegs Jegeles is more of a project/practice squad type guy at this point, but he has almost the same build as Autry (6'5" 273 for JJ vs. 6'5"270 for Autry).

I think folks need to take a grain of salt with all these pressers. Just like his comments on WR, then he took a WR in the early rounds.

I expect him to sell his current guys. You want them to think we are confident in them, and you also want FAs to know that we aren't desperate.

IMO, I like several of the guys, but I'll definitely take an upgrade anywhere on the iDL for a short term.

I think we also carried more OL last year because Castonzo was banged up the first 5 weeks of the season and then we had some health/injury issues with Kelly on and off later in the season.  With Q we've got a guy that can play G/C and probably T... with Smith, he can play all 5 positions on the line, and so can Haeg.... it sounds like this Jarvis Patterson and Glowinski can play all interior positions -- so I tend to think if it came down to it, if we're healthy on the OL, we'd see us carrying 9 and increasing WR/LB/DB/DL by a a digit compared to last year as those are more rotational positions and we seem pretty deep at all of them.

As far as TE goes, I think Reich really likes to run 2 TE's in his offense.  Doyle missed 10+ games last year and our back-up TE's after him were Mo Alie-Cox who is very raw (though played fairly well considering he played basketball in college), Eric Swoope (who was an OK WR, but couldn't block) and some other no-names.  When Doyle was healthy, we seemed to run a lot more 2 TE sets... I think Reich was adapting to his personnel when Doyle was out (do we go with TY, Inman, Grant on the field along with 1 TE or do we go with TY/Inman on the field with Ebron and Ross Travis?? kind of a rock and a hard place there... if Doyle comes back healthy, I expect we'll be much more balanced next year unless of course Funchess/Campbell/Cain are all playing like rock-stars).

Yup, injury always plays huge part in the "53", among other things. I'm fine with carry more OL, but I think we've got guys this year we know about now. If LT health is still a concern, then I'm good carrying more again.

On TE usage, Reich's 2TE sets have fluctuated by team. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw more than the ~28% of 2TE sets from last year, but I also know we have a lot more potential at WR (TY, Funch, Campbell, Cain) this year. We also play 7 of the 11 top passing Os this year, so we may need to play less possession ball, and more wide open ball. If I were going to guess, we'll see possession ball vs division foes, and more wide open vs the others.

Keep in mind Funch is a TE-lite, so I could see 2TE sets decrease just because of that. I also don't think Doyle will be back in 2020, so would not be surprised if other TEs got more reps in games where we're ahead by a few scores.

He's bigger, faster and stronger than Rogers and the same size as Pascal but also faster and stronger.

If he shows any kind of polish as a receiver, there is a chance to earn a roster spot.

i think he's a project at WR, which we already have a few of those...

but i think if his hands are solid for returns, he could grab a slot.

i like roger's consistency (both at WR and returns) and his improvement last year at WR, but i just don't see him ever excelling at returns. he is great depth at WR (and returns) though.

Would be nice, but we all know the CBA doesn't allow that right now. Not until we get into Phase 3 of the off season activities around or after May 21 when the OTA's begin. Dates-

    Indianapolis Colts

    First day: April 15
    Rookie minicamp: May 3-5
OTA offseason workouts: May 21-23, May 29-31, June 3-6
    Mandatory minicamp: June 11-13

A little break here before full go.

yup. it's one of many parts of the CBA I think they need to tweak. not so concerned with the higher profile guys, but wish the tryout and udfas had the benefit. by the sounds of it, at least part of the camp had it's share of bad tosses.

And another point about Walker is, his snaps increased as the year went on.  They took it easy with him the first 4 or 5 weeks of the season because he missed all of training camp with an injury.  The last 7 weeks of the year (including the playoffs), he never saw less than 74% of the snaps (Except for the Giants game when they kept him out with a shoulder injury he sustained against the Cowboys).

So once the team was comfortable he had recovered from his injury he was on the field a lot.

Yup. While I don't think Walker is a superstar, he's far from a slouch. He's a fifth round pick, who did quite nicely in his soph season, and in the first year of Eberflus's D. Can't expect much more out of 5th round guy. He's exceeded my expectations already and I'd bet he continues to improve.

Funchess doesn't have elite speed, but I do think he's got the size and the capability of being very dangerous in this offense (both outside and in the slot/RZ).  The fact that we've got burners in TY/Campbell should allow the coaches to be even more crafty with their use of Funchess.

If Cain comes back, or even if they run Campbell on the outside, I don't see Funchess on the outside too much. I see him used a lot more in the slot (than the 15% usage in Carolina), and at X going across short to intermediate (the routes he showed successful in).

He'll be like having a second TE on the field in 3WR sets, and one in 4WR sets. We really have so many great options this year.

Yes, I think Reich can be very creative in play calling, given the right tools.....

You can already tell how excited he is to have Funchess and Campbell for Luck to work with.  If Cain comes back to form, we should have 4 WR's who could be WR2 or better on this team, compared to last year when we had TY at 3/4 speed and a bunch of guys who likely wouldn't be a top 3-4 WR on most other teams.

IMO, we have two WRs that can be a legit WR2 (Cain and Campbell). Funchess is just really limited as a true X. I love what Funchess brings in the slot, and in short yardage and RZ.

One other area where I thought Reich and Sirianni really excelled last year was keeping Luck healthy.  I forgot until just watching an interview with Luck and Jeff Saturday that Luck was the least sacked QB in the NFL last year..... that was with a rotating OL at many portions of the season due to injuries.

Grigson/Pagano/etc. almost got Luck killed in the first 5 years of his career.  I really, really like that Ballard/Reich/etc. came in and really emphasized keeping Andrew upright and getting the ball out of his hand quick.... with another year behind our OL, I expect we'll only improve from here.

I think Brees was the least sacked of starters, but yes, it was awesome to keep him out of harm's way. I give Ballard more credit than the other guys though for drafting Q and Smith. Glad we have both locked up on cheap deals for the next 3 years. I think we'll hit OT high next draft.

I think Reich had very limited tools  last year.  Doyle was hurt most of the year.  TY had to play w/ a high & low ankle sprain for the last almost half of the season.  Luck was coming off missing over a full season.

Our WR2 for the last half of the season was Dontrelle Inman (who played admirably, but would not be the WR2 on most NFL teams).  We had a lot of injuries on-and-off throughout the season on the OL.

Mack missed some time due to injury..... all that aside, Luck still threw for the 5th most yards in the NFL, the 2nd most TDs and we had the 7th overall total offense.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that we can stay healthy (on both sides of the ball) and that the additions of Funchess, Campbell and another year under the belts of Mack, Hines, Wilkins (and addition of Spencer) really pan out for this team.  I think at the end of the day, Reich and Sirianni probably over-achieved with our O last year.

    Agree with all of that.

My biggest beef, is play calling late in the season. Seemed very predictable. More tools should help. With what we've signed and drafted, I expect a very good year. If Cain comes back to form too, I expect a lot.

I haven’t found much information or video, but Shippy ran a 4.82 40 which is  terrific for DT.

I always take pro day results with a huge grain of salt.

4.82 if accurate though would have put him top 5 of iDL at the combine.

It will be interesting what happens past Tuesday... I think that's the date after which the new signings don't count towards the compensatory pick equation.

yup, things should heat back up a little.

really curious to see if we're done, with a significant amount of cap space left.

would love to see one or two more short terms deals so long as they don't impact financials long term.

Colts add four after rookie minicamp, but not Chad Kelly

Posted by Darin Gantt on May 5, 2019, 1:48 PM EDT

The Colts took advantage of their free look at some rookies this weekend, and found a few they liked.

The team announced the addition of four undrafted rookies who stood out in their minicamp.

The signings were: Kicker Cole Hedlund, defensive tackle Sterling Shippy, cornerback Shakial Taylor, and linebacker Tre Thomas.

To make room for them on the roster, they waived kicker Clayton Hatfield, cornerback Chris Rayford, and defensive end Anthony Winbush.

Of course, that announcement suggests they did not feel like keeping quarterback Chad Kelly, at least not yet. The former Broncos seventh-rounder was also in camp on a tryout basis this weekend.

Probably Kelly, Chryst, and Cody Keith for part of the time

Really wish they had a chance to catch some of Luck's tosses.

I get we need to grade out QBs, just hate that WRs who are trying to make the team might have to rely on mediocre QB play.

Funchess and Ebron will probably have close to the same number. I think Ebron  numbers will go down with Funchess. We are so loaded I don’t think anyone will have career years. I think 500 yards and 7 TD for both Ebron and  funchess will be really good.

The bolded is one of a few reasons I didn't like the signing. I assumed we'd draft a WR early, and that mixed with Cain returning, I felt like it was more of an insurance pick up, and he'd only take production away from Ebron if those two things happened. Never thought of him as an answer to our lack of a well rounded X.

I am however happy we have him now. Just not happy with the value (doesn't matter we have the $). Would love to see him get a lot of snaps at slot.

Wow, you may be right, but it would be a total bust in my opinion if he only gets 500 yards.  We had low paid UDFAs good enough to do that.  10 million for 500 yards? That would be one of the biggest wastes of money I can imagine if that happens.  Maybe if he had all of Ebron's TDs then it would balance. Otherwise, yikes.  That would be $20K dollars per yard.

If TY gets 1000+, and Cain, DF, Campbell, and Ebron all get over 500 I'd be OK with that. I just really want a well rounded guy to step up and get solid WR2 numbers (800+). I think both Cain and Campbell have that type of potential. Regardless, I'm just stoked that having outside speed will keep doubles off TY. That was my biggest underlying want.
