Based on what we’ve read and seen from both these guys, I would say, yes, they’ve watched their mistakes on tape too. Let’s not forget, last year was the first time for both of them in their positions. And things were screwy at first but got better. I imagine the prep and learning shall continue

agree 100%. super happy with eberflus's first year. mixed emotion on reich, but he had limited tools to work with, so giving him the benefit of the doubt. going to be fun this season.

My claim was that Funchess would match what TY did in year 1, what was it, like 850 yards? I think that sounds about right.  He was every bit an 800+ yard receiver for Carolina wasn't he?

DF was drafted to take over #1 WR, and X IIRC. He started slow with a good first year 400ish, regressed a little year two 300ish, had a good year three 800ish, then went backwards with 500ish last year when Carolina drafted DJ Moore who too WR1 his first year.

TY had 850ish his first year. I'll be really happy if DF gets 700, but I think he'll be in the 500-700 range given the increased comp he'll have with TY, Cain coming back, and now Parris.

Care to wager a beverage of your choice that the receiving corp this year will exceed the production with Luck beyond any previous year? I think he could challenge the TD record if he and at least 3 of the top 5 WRs and at least one of the TEs stay healthy.  He played last year with a hobbled receiver and guys most of us hope aren't good enough to make the roster this year (though I suspect Rogers is going to unfortunately meaning failure by a lot of guys).  I get and respect  your legit stats as you lay them out, but we haven't gone into any season with remotely this much talent or depth at WR.  Funchess will be at least the equal to Hilton Year 1 in terms of yards this year and even Rogers this coming year is better than Avery was back then in my opinion and I think it is unlikely he fills that role, over one of the young guys.  Heck we did see Pascal out there, give me him, Funchess, Hilton and Rogers and that is the best Corp in Lucks career.  Imagine if Cain, Campbell or the others hit big.  ALL the other players won't wash out.  They're going to rock and roll this year.  And if the two TE's stay healthy all season, Luck could set some serious records.

Anyway, thanks for the debate.  No creampuffs were harmed in this live fire event.

Hey JP, I'm happy to buy you a beverage of your choice regardless whenever I come back to Indy (assuming you're in Indy). I'm being cautious, but I think we easily have the most potential talent now. There's just a whole lot to work out in the next 4 months.

Keep in mind last year that Luck had more yards than he did in 2012. It's the fact that he had one WR, and then played musical chairs with all the others. I want a legit #2 on the outside, and if we have that, I think we can blow the doors off this year.

I will bet you a bottle of Crown or Scotch though that Funchess is nowhere near TY in yards (unless TY has injury issues). TY will likely have even more yards this year since teams won't be able to double him. Funchess won't hit 1000. If I win, I'll drink it with you :-).

If Suh is so great why he still available

he or someone like will be available at camp if necessary

the younger and longer term guys went pre-draft, now it's post draft.

those that didn't draft what they needed, now get a second look see.

he's older, but still has been productive.

suh will get picked up. hope it's us for a reasonable deal.

Currently the roster is at 84 with 5 unsigned DPs and at least 1 tryout signing to get to 90

The guys still out there have some kind of red flag

The only spot that needs any improvement is the DL and I would like to see what the UDFAs/DP have over someone like Suh

If the UDFAs are good, hope we keep them as developmental, but that in no way would make take instant production from a guy like Suh.

I have a feeling that the Colts are done after seeing the roster numbers

not sure why roster numbers, etc are any different than previous years.

if we're upping the talent across the board, it means were cutting better plays too.

hard choices, but i'll always side on improving the roster even if it hurts some times.

I voted IDL, yes, and Suh. I do not want to hear from anyone how Suh wouldn't make this team better. That is pure nonsense, he hasn't been a bonehead in years and is one of the best players to ever play his position. If we signed him for 1 year, game over. I say we win 12 games then and win the SB.

i'd prefer a 2 year deal front loaded so it's better for us year 2 cap wise.

i'm with you though. after showing so much interest in bonehead Kelly, Suh should not bother anyone. Not sure about winning the SB, but it certainly gets us closer and give us a better chance.

Jared Dubin of CBS Sports names the Indianapolis Colts as the top destination for Suh, as the Colts still have an unreal $57.8 million remaining in cap space and have a need for an interior pass rusher.

  9. Beginning Tuesday, FA adds no longer count into the compensatory equation, so things should heat back up a little.

SI just published an article about the best free agents left.

    https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/05/03/remaining-free-agent-ranknigs-ziggy-ansah-ndamukong-suh-michael-crabtree

    1. Ziggy Ansah, DE
The soon-to-be-30-year-old hasn’t played a full 16-game season since 2016, but did log 12 sacks in 2017 and four over a seven-game stretch in 2018. The former first-round pick could be a solid addition for a team searching for help on the edge.

    2. Ndamukong Suh, DT
Suh, 32, is one of the greatest defensive players at his position in the modern era. I think back to the Super Bowl, where he was effective early—had the Rams produced some offense we might be talking more about his impact on the game plan. Suh might be a part-time player, and an expensive one at that. But there’s always room for a versatile tackle who specializes in pissing people off.

    3. Zach Brown, LB
One of Pro Football Focus’s best linebackers last season, Brown is under 30 and will probably have suitors. If you missed out on Devin White or Devin Bush in the draft, you may need to look to someone like Brown for help.

(UPDATE: Does Howie Roseman subscribe to the Morning Huddle? The Eagles announced they signed Brown five minutes after this hit inboxes.)

    4. Eric Berry, S
Health is obviously a concern for Berry, who has played in three games over the last two seasons (torn Achilles and heel bruise). Still, I think back to what his old defensive coordinator, Bob Sutton, used to say about Berry’s singular ability to destroy an opposition’s game plan. He could be one of the most fortuitous gambles of the offseason.

    5. Tre Boston, S
Boston is only 26 and had a good season in Arizon last year—79 total tackles, three QB hits, three interceptions and nine passes defensed. While he may be bummed out that other teams don’t see the value, he’ll get his chance to prove them wrong.

    6. Donald Penn, OT
Penn just turned 35, won’t be cheap and won’t play any special teams. He made it through four games last year before getting placed on injured reserve with a groin injury. But he was a productive player not so long ago, recently professed his desire to continue playing, and could be a solid option for teams who whiffed on the offensive line class in this draft.

    7. Nick Perry, OLB
He had 18 sacks between 2016 and 2017 in Green Bay, and Perry could be a nice chess piece for a defense looking to fill a hole before training camp. It helps that he’ll still have some gas in the tank.

    8. Shane Ray, OLB
A potential career realignment could be in order. Just 25, Ray recently visited the Seahawks (and had a few whiffs earlier in the spring). He logged just two sacks over the last two seasons, but a change of scenery could bring out what he does best.

    9. Michael Crabtree, WR
The former first-round pick is a long way from his 2016 season, when he logged his last 1,000-yard campaign. He’ll still be a red zone threat for a team that may need to upgrade their receiver depth.

    10. Jamie Collins, OLB
Hard to believe his tenure in Cleveland is over. Once a symbol of the new-life Sashi Brown Browns, Collins is back on the market. His value has tanked a bit since becoming a defensive stalwart in New England, but linebacker is a position of need for a lot of teams.

    11. Muhammad Wilkerson, DT
The former first-round pick may be far away from his past as an effective hybrid lineman in Rex Ryan’s 3-4 defense, but there is still room for players who can stretch the line and play multiple gaps.

    12. Bennie Logan, DT
He had a down season statistically in Tennessee, but at one time Logan was a desirable set piece on a defensive line. Now 29, we might soon be hearing from teams still worried about their ability to stop the run.

    13. Danny Shelton, DT
The big-bodied tackle had some action early in free agency but is still available. Like Logan, a team looking for run support will give him a call. He was solid in that regard for the Patriots last year.

You don't think we currently have more WR talent than at any other time in Luck's career? When did he have more than a developing Hilton and an aging Reggie? That was about as good as it ever was until this year.   Heck, when he had an injured hobbled Hilton and Inman late in the season felt like luxury compared to what he usually has had.

2012 was plenty good. WR1 Reggie with 1350+, WR2 TY with 850+, and Avery with 750+. That's a good threesome of production. Reggie was hurt (ACL) in 2013, but still manged 500+ in less than half the season, and TY had his first 1000 yard season. TY and Wayne did good again in 2014, and add 400+ from 2 other WRs each. Luck only played 7 games in 2015, but we had 3 decent guys, one 1000+, one 700+, and one 500+. 2016 was when the wheels came off with WR imo, and IIRC, the OL took a major step back too that year.

To compare, last year we only one WR over 500 yards... Just one.

This year, we have on the roster now

    Proven guys

-1 proven tier 1 veteran Colt's WR (TY)

-1 tier 2, but improving veteran Colt's WR (Rogers)

High Potential guys, but definitely not a sure thing

-1 TE-lite WR trying to rebound his career (Funchess) on a prove it contract who is limited at X

-1 2nd year rookie (Cain) with zero NFL production combing back from major surgery

-1 Raw but very fast guy (Campbell) rookie who was a gadget guy running very limited routes

    It's a crap shoot

-Pacal who was a UDFA from 2 years ago that we claimed off waivers. 250ish last year

-Fountain - picked a round before Cain, he's a major project, on the practice squad most 2018

-Veasy - UDFA last year that we signed a futures contract with

-Johnson - UDFA three years ago who we traded for during 2018 season.

-Ishmael - UDFA last year, practice squad most of the year

-Hogan - UDFA from 2 years ago, practice squad and IR

-Hart - UDFA this year. Decent prospect

-Dulin - UDFA this year. Might get early work as return guy. I like his chances.

We know what we have with TY and Rogers.

Cain is an injury question until he is not. Campbell has elite potential, but needs a lot of work.

Funchess will likely see time at X and Slot. He will get more work if Cain is slow to come back. Campbell could even get tried out at X if Cain is slow to come back. If Cain and Campbell are quick getting time, that's likely bad for Funchess. The rest are guys we really can't assume anything about.

There's a lot to be excited about in terms of potential, but not close to crowning them yet. In short, if we find 3 that can top 2012's numbers, they yes.

absolutely. but Mack took a huge step forward. let's hope Wilkins does too.

Hopefully  they studied that jags game

Jags and KC are the most glaring, but there are several that were bad on O, and several bad on D that can be studied as well. Luckily, D's likely won't be able to do the same things to us this year with added help at WRs.

If he doesn't know he's on thin ice then he's likely got more issues than we already know about. I can agree with other posters in the fact that Reich's influence likely made this a possibility. I really really hope this works out.

This is like his 4th chance after 3 or 4 "incidents".

Reich needs to say "hey dude, no drinking, no stupid stuff, and by the way, Andrew needs someone to organize his weekly book club meetings. Make sure you read A Girl Named Zippy and others on the list before next Friday. I'll look forward to your weekly book reports"

  13. The whole "playing outside receiver" part of the report really is interesting. I said earlier he could play anywhere (Z, Slot, or even X) if he can beat the press at the line. I know it's early, but this is great news. If Cain is slow to come back, or god forbid never gets his speed back, It would be really nice to have Parris as an outside option. No sense over analyzing now or making assumptions, but interesting nonetheless. I'd say at minimum they could use him as a situational speed X.

I concur.  The kid has talent and potential and we know Brissett is likely gone after this season.  Why not take a flyer on him and see if he has his head on straight?  If so, we might have a decent back up QB to continue to groom.

a low price tag would make the risk more palatable.

hope this kid realizes he's walking on thin ice and grows up.

luck i'm sure would be a good influence. he could join andrew's book club...
