     There is this-

"All 32 NFL teams are invited to provide input on draft-eligible players which is used by the Player Selection Committee to select each year’s participants. The Directors of both National and BLESTO scouting services, which combined represent 28 NFL teams, are joined by members of various NFL player personnel departments to form the committee. The participating NFL executives can rotate on a yearly basis, and remain anonymous. ALL eligible players are reviewed and voted on by the committee members. Each athlete receiving the necessary number of votes, by position, is then extended an invitation. While it is not a perfect science, the goal of the committee is to invite every player that will be drafted in the ensuing NFL Draft."

And more.  I hear well over 300 get an invite, yet almost 1/3 don't get drafted.  Then another 35-50 are not invited (many poor character issue guys, which essentially makes them ineligible to attend) get drafted.  Seems odd, but I hear it is fairly consistent.

And I also wonder if some teams don't vote for under the radar guys just because they want to pick them up as UDFAs or draft them out of "nowhere".

Personally, I would have taken Cain at 159, but obviously someone had a hard on for Fountain on the staff.

    Gil Brandt ✔ @Gil_Brandt

Notable players (including the most recent SB MVP) not invited to the combine:

    Julian Edelman
    Antonio Gates
    Wes Welker
    Osi Umenyiora
    Sam Shields
    James Harrison
    Victor Cruz
    Doug Baldwin
    Malcolm Butler
    Jay Ratliff

they don't always get their invites correct, just like the college recruiting services don't always get their star count correct. i get why Fountain didn't get an invite because of his college production (school size), as it's rare of a N Iowa guy going..... But, getting the O MVP at the Shrine game should have been an auto invite.

  5. Happy that Banogu is concentrating on DE, Okereke is someone other than MIKE, and things seem to be coming together for RYS. I think it's huge for Banogu to concentrate on technique at DE. And glad to see they are not trying to force a tweener that's better in space into a MIKE role.

RYS is going to see a lot of time early in subpackages and will be challenging for a starting spot by mid season. If he translates to the NFL like he translated to Temple in one off season, he's going to be a big contributor sooner than later.

Will have to go back and watch but I swear I saw him attacking from the middle.  Could be wrong certainly.

Stanford runs a 3-4. Okereke was a MLB and was the "captain".....

I mentioned it when we drafted him, he's a tweener, and doesn't really have the size (more the base) to be a MIKE for us. IMO it will shake out that he's a WILL back-up and in the rotation potentially at SAM.

Like NCF said, his strength is more side to side and in coverage, not holding the middle. He's a smart and instinctive kid, just doesn't have the body/strength to be an every down MIKE.

  7. 10 hours ago, krunk said:

He can do either thing, however I do believe he played Mike at Stanford.

Yup he did. I don't think he has the build for NFL MIKE.

His base is pretty slight in comparison to prototypical MLBs.

IMO, Okereke isn't a guy who's going to replace Walker. Honestly I don't see him as a starting LB either in the NFL (in general), unless it's very scheme specific. If he were starting at MIKE or WILL, it means someone is hurt....

At this point it doesn't seem like the Colts have much need of offensive skill players.  Maybe an RB would make some sense (because I believe Mack could be improved upon) or just to add depth.

Another option with both Ebron and Doyle's contract's running out might be TE.  Not sure how strong the draft is there, but it might make some sense to draft a TE.

But of course we will see how things play out this season.

A lot could change by the end of the year.

Contracts that are up at the end of the season.

    Ware - RB

Williams - RB (he'll be lucky to make the PS squad this year IMO)

    Funchess - WR

    Rogers - WR

    Fountain - WR

    Johnson - WR

    Pascal - WR

    Ebron - TE

    Doyle - TE

    Cox - TE

    Holmes - TE

    Travis - TE

WR - TY was hobbled last year and aging, Cain is basically a rookie coming back from a major injury, and Campbell is a rookie. That's really all that's locked up aside from a few UDFA's that will be lucky to make the PS. I love the potential, but that's all it is right now aside from TY.

TE - Our 3 top TEs expire. I'd guess they'll resign Ebron and Cox, but wouldn't be shocked if they drafted a TE in rounds 2-4. Doyle is an aging wildcard IMO.

RB - I think we're solid with Mack (every down / lead), Hines (APB), and Wilkins (Mack BU), but I could see us going for short yardage guy in the draft if Ware doesn't work out.

Not saying we will or won't need O skill players in the draft, but there's a ton of contracts expiring, and sheet happens.

Funchess looking good on Desir today. This was obviously not a play that showed Desir great day. Funchess does not look like he is body catching here. His hands look great.

on one of the NFL.com shows, Funch said he is working on that (body catching) big time. made me happy happy happy.

honestly though, that's not the type of pass (high) you have to worry about him body catching.

I guess I was thinking third and short yardage. Which he isn’t. I do get though why he is a third down back because he gives them options. Sorry for the confusion.

Ware will be the short yardage back IMO. Pumped to have more of a bully for those rushing situations. Also pumped to have a bruiser to punish teams late in games when we're up.

Hines is a prototype "3rd down back" or APB. I know, confusing nomenclatures lol.

Has Moore ever played special teams?

On the colts Instagram page there is a couple  very short videos from today. One is DF running a great route and catch.

Moore played 140 ST's snaps last year, or about 32% of ST's plays. Ranked 13th on the team (most ST's snaps).

Kick returns have pretty much fazed out of the NFL. It makes more sense to not return the kick and just start at the 25-yard line.

Punt returns are slowly beginning to be fazed out as well. Sure, you can attempt a punt return but you are practically guaranteed a flag due to some sort of illegal blocking or holding call. It's good coaching to call for the fair catch instead of taking an additional 15-yard penalty. As you mentioned, Chester Rogers was top-10 AND well coached.

yup, the whole topic is a complete non-issue.

regarding KRs, Indy attempted the second least returns.... and the 6th least PRs.

honestly though, not a fan of our KR average, but PR is just fine.

That is not even being fully healthy. Now for Hooker to really reach his potential, he needs to learn to bait QBs then he'll start to get more ints.

That will absolutely help, but I think what will help even more is an improved pass rush and better coverage from the other DBs....

Going to be interesting assuming we have an upgraded pass rush already with adding Houston and Bonagu. Given the upgraded QBs we'll see, and the fact we'll likely score more with our improved WR unit...........We'll be passed against much more often this year, so the DBs will be given more opportunity.

Honestly, I'll be stoked if he just stays healthy.

There was a story out of OTAs the other day about several replays of Fountain running routes in OTAs being held up by Reich as the right way to run the routes.  Fountain is a better athlete than Cain, a notoriously hard worker, and he’s made progress while Cain’s been forced into the training room.  It may not be fair, because Cain was definitely better coming in, but I don’t think that’s the case anymore..,

Fountain better be running good routes lol. Supposedly he spent a ton of time with a coaches/trainers specifically on route running all off season.

And that's all well and good, but that's one off season of technique coaching. It's a whole different world when guys put the pads on and have DBs going live.

I truly hope Fountain has put it all together, as he's got such great measurements. I know Fountain has a better vert than Cain, but Cain is a tad faster, and his other measurements are more than adequate to be a stud. So both are very fast, and Fountain can jump better...

And, depending on where they put Fountain, might not even matter. Cain was definitely an X last year in camp. They've treated Fountain as a tweener, but had him listed in the Z/Slot bucket when activated. Cain will be on the roster or PUP regardless come September.

If they push Fountain back to the X bucket, it would likely be a Fountain/Pascal conversation. If Fountain is in the Z/Slot bucket, it's a Campbell/Rogers/Fountain conversation. Keep in mind Campbell was running with the 2s during OTAs, and Rogers the 1s. Reich and I think Ballard commented on Rogers as looking very very good, and having his best camp ever.

It'll be interesting. Good problem to have.

I think Luck will make the top 30 (he should) but it is hard telling with that list. Like most lists, you never know?? TY and Ebron will barely make it IMO but they will. Nelson and Leonard will be top 75 or should be.

yup it's really hard when most "lists" don't define any criteria.

  15. Top 100,,,, if they are representing each position equally, means the top 4ish at each position, I think we have 4 or 5.

Nelson is easily a top 4 LG.

Leonard is easily a top 4 WLB.

Ebron was top #1 in TDs and top 5 in yards, should be easily in top 100.

TY is top 4 Z (or simply small WR), only behind Hill and Brown in stats.

Kelly might be a top 4 C, although C is probably under represented in most Top 100s.

In terms of who would be in demand the most, or make the most money, Luck, Nelson, TY, Leonard, Ebron....

  16. Bagging on Rogers for PRs is a little silly. He was #9 in average yards per return. No he didn't have any TDs, but no PR had more than 1 TD last year.

Sure, he had the highest # of FCs, but that's likely more safe coaching and/or crappy ST's blocking.

I'll take top 10 all day and not lose sleep. We have so many other Qs that are much bigger. Sure I'd love PC to come in and be a monster, but PRs don't make my top 20 concerns.

  17. One of my buddies was pretty high on him when we hired him.

He's been coaching in the NFL for 20ish years. Always wondered how his previous teams produced, but never really did the research. Might have to pull some numbers.

Last year he did a damn good job assuming it wasn't just dumb luck. Dealing with a bunch of young guys and a hurt RB1 early in the season. And loved how well NH did his rookie season.

  18. IIRC, we play 7 or the top 11 passing teams this year. We'll see.

IMO, Hooker will be great if he can keep healthy. The rest, IDK. I think our success last year had a lot to do with scheme. I think RYS has some elite qualities too, but qualities don't always translate.

All I know is that I'm happy we improved the WR unit, and happy we have a good short yardage RB this year. This year we're going to have to score more, it's as simple as that.

This attitude is pervasive around here, and I disagree.  Cain’s resume consists of about ten good days of TC and an ACL tear.  Coming off such a major injury and not having much time for development last year/this off-season, Cain is way behind Fountain and Rogers.  Those two have to be considered much more likely to make the roster than Cain...particularly with the great off-seasons they’ve had.

Rogers yes, Fountain, not really. I'm a big Fountain fan, but he played at N Iowa, and was a very raw one year wonder. Outside of health, how is Fountain way ahead of Cain?

Cain played at a top 5 D1 against major competition and had 500+ yards/year (for 3 straight years) beginning his FR year, skipping his SR year for the draft. Cain has it big over Fountain in terms of 1) polish, 2) competition played against, 3) college coaching received, and 4) overall production.

In terms of Pro production, neither have done anything. Cain by all reports had locked up starting X easily, while Fountain struggled running routes and didn't make the team even with Cain's injury (was cut and later resigned to the PS after clearing waivers IIRC). When he did get called up, he dropped a TD in mop up duty.

To me, it's going to be all about what position they see Fountain playing. IIRC he's been in a grey area. Has the size to play X, but was also running slot reps and was listed in the Z/Slot grouping on the depth chart when he was activated. If they see him as a long term X, he's competing with Cain and Pascal. If Z/Slot, competing with Campbell and Rogers.

Personally, If Fountain has taken a good step forward in terms of polish, I'd rather he play in the X space, with Pascal not making the cut. Pascal probably has the lowest ceiling out of front group.

  20. Kemoko Turay - if he's behind Houston, not betting on him. If he moves behind Sheard, then I'd feel better.

Tyquan Lewis - if he's really moving inside, I just don't see him playing early downs unless he can put on healthy weight.

Nehiem Hines - he'll improve and be a more "planned" part of the O, but we have a lot of weapons.

Daurice Fountain - depends where they put him. If they put him at slot or Z, he'll be competing for spot with Rogers. If they put him at X, he'll be competing for a spot with Pascal. I think he stands a better shot vs Pascal.

Deon Cain - DC is the front runner IMO. Chip on his shoulder, but we really need a prototype X, and he could be it if he returns to form.

Matthew Adams - he's behind Leonard. Going to be hard.

Zaire Franklin - he plays SAM, which we don't use that much. And could be competing with Banogu....

  21. If they are truly committed to moving Lewis inside, at his current weight, Lewis will be nothing more than a passing downs DT. If he can be healthy and gain enough to be 290+ consistently, he may be able to transform, but that's a tall order unless he's been fighting to keep weight off this whole time.

Turay is a pure wild card to me. I can see him growing into a top DE, or staying staying status quo in that 2 spot and playing mostly on passing downs.

Honestly I'd almost rather see Turay behind Sheard, and let Banogu learn from behind Houston. And my biggest wish is that they forget about Banogu at SAM and let him concentrate on technique and DE.
