It depends on how many out of the current group they feel they can safely keep on the practice squad. I think 4 is kind of crazy, but when you look at keeping a plethora of tight ends and maybe an extra runningback on active roster, you start factoring Ebron and Hines in as receivers more than tight end and runningback, as we will likely see those two split out more than in a traditional role. That's the beauty of versatility.

Hines is a 3rd down or APB. He won't take one of the minimum 5 slots for WR. Funchess would be looked at as a TE before Ebron would be looked at as a WR.

    Last year's PC had 1 TE, 2 WRs, 1 QB, 1 RB, 2 DEs, 1 CB, 1 OG, and 1 LB

Willis - the 4th round pick they traded up to get will be lucky to make the 53?  Man that is highly questionable. I’d say he is much closer to a lock to make the roster than be cut prior to opening day.

It's just math. Let's say we keep 10 DBs like we did to start last year, and it's split 5 CBs and 5 Ss. On the depth chart, we always show 3 FSs and 2 SSs. Willis is a strong safety, and probably more accurately a box safety in the NFL. So He's competing for one of two SS spots. If you think he's going to beat out Kindred and Farley, then OK, but it's anything from a lock. I get we traded up for him, but he's not a great athlete and rather limited. And keep in mind that MSU was 64th vs the pass, and #1 vs the run. And we play a ton of good QBs this year. My bet is the practice squad.

    Saftey

Likely locks (2) - FS Hooker 87%, SS Geathers 68%

    Competing

    3. FS Odum 19% made great use of snaps when Hooker was out.

    4. SS Kindred 42% (Browns) - good depth if injuries are behind him. Signed in April

    5. SS Farley 14% - Good when healthy - Colts tendered him at second round level in March

    6. SS Willis - rook

    7/8. Milligan / Johnson

For kicks, here's my thoughts on CB too since Tell could impact both CB and S....

Also to note, as the year went along, we used a lot more 3 CB lines ups (65%ish of the time) vs 3 S lineups (20%ish of the time). Another reason we might keep 6 CBs and only 4 Ss.

    Cornerback

    Likely locks (4) - Desir 86%, Moore 87%, Wilson 42%, RYS

Competing for that 5th. or 5th and 6th spot(s) and ranked

    5. Collins - if his PED days are behind him, there's a lot of talent there

    6. Harriston 39%

    7. Tell (he's a hybrid S/CB and may be a reason they keep 6 CBs and only 4 Ss

    8. Milton 5%

    9. Taylor

It would not surprise me at all if both Geathers and Farley were traded/released.

If they feel Odum and Kindred/Willis can provide the same production without the injuries or salary (and be a part of the long term core), they may try to trade them to a good home ala Simon and Hankins.

Kindred has all kinds of injury flags, and Willis will be lucky to make the 53 IMO.

Suggesting Geathers would be traded or released is like the post the other day talking about Funch being released. Pretty sure Geathers was the first FA re-up, and it was only a one year deal. He'll be here. We're not in a position where we need to save.

It seems like we have got a lot of guys on this team who really are good to the community.  That story about Kenny... Glowinski helping push the car of a stranger a few weeks ago... The Maniac helping fix a stranger's flat tire last year... etc. etc. etc.

I like that Ballard and Co. really place an emphasis on character of the guys they are bringing into this team.

yup, you would think that they must be receiving "good deed" bonuses or something.

Ok, he floundered his way into convincing Chris Ballard to write him a check for $7M to sign his contract, another $3M in base salary, and another $3M in incentives.
If he earns all his bonus he will make the same $$$ as T Y for the 2019 season.
Drop the one terrible "drops" game he had last season, and he had a better drop rate than Guess Who, T Y.
You have been here long enough to know to refer to Spotrac or overthe cap for contract info.
I was not a fan of the Funchess signing at all, but i educated myself on his history, watched some tape, and listened to CB and Frank. Funchess "SHOULD" be very good in our system. Yeah Funchess!

First, you can't remove a game lol..... And you can't ignore his hands history going back to college.

Second, you have to look at targets. TY had 120 targets, while Funch had 79. That's less than 2/3rds of TY's. I'd also note that TY was a victim of too many forced balls when he was in double coverage. That won't happen nearly as much this year. Funch was I believe 3rd or 4th in targets for Carolina, and was rarely doubled.

I do agree Funchess can be good in our system, but that's if they limit him to the routes he's good at (like the ones the Colts published). I also think that Luck is good enough, and smart enough, to throw balls away from his body (he's better catching at eye level or higher, or outside of core). Regardless, I'd bet a lot of money he doesn't hit his incentive (unless we have some serious injuries at WR).

  8. It will be interesting this year. If he stays healthy, he should be top 10 in yards. I'm guessing he'll lose short yardage and late game (when we are up) carries to Ware, which is fine with me. That should help keep him healthy and more productive when he does get the ball. His YPG I'm guessing will be similar, but his YPC should go up.

  9. Here's the article. Again, doesn't say anything definitely, but I'd say it's safe to assume we're keeping at minimum 5 based on Reich's comment below (bolded in red).

    https://coltswire.usatoday.com/2019/06/06/indianapolis-colts-wide-receiver-competition-devin-funchess-parris-campbell/

    Quote

As the Indianapolis Colts wrap up organized team activities Thursday and look to the final phase of spring workouts—mandatory minicamp—there will continue to be several eyes watching over the wide receiver competition.

Granted, the Colts know the competition doesn’t truly get heated up until the pads come on during training camp. But head coach Frank Reich can’t help but notice how much deeper the unit is this spring compared to the group he coached in his first season just one year ago.

“Last year at this time it wasn’t as deep,” Reich told reporters Tuesday. “I think those battles were starting to in some ways declare themselves a little bit even now even though you know deep down you’ve got to wait until training camp. But this year definitely there is more depth there, more guys that we have a lot of confidence in.”

We know T.Y. Hilton has his top spot locked up as WR1. All of the roles behind him, though, are up for grabs, and there are a lot of hungry mouths looking to chomp out an impact role in the room.

Indy brought in Devin Funchess on a one-year deal to compete for a starting role on the outside. He made some waves early in OTAs while the Colts are awaiting the return of Deon Cain, who is expected to be ready for training camp back from is torn ACL.

Rookie Parris Campbell will undoubtedly receive a lot of attention, but he’s worked mostly on the second-team offense with a few designed plays allowing him to work with the first team.

Fourth-year wideout Chester Rogers is having a strong spring, potentially the best out of the group through OTAs. He’s a player Reich has noticed from the position this spring.

“I think Chester’s spring has been really good,” Reich said. “I mean, really good.”

It isn’t clear how many wide receivers the Colts will keep on the roster. They started the season with five in 2018. It appears that could be kept the same this fall, but Reich detailed what he will be looking for in those final spots on the roster.

“So literally it’s we’ll let it all play out and guys are going to get a lot of reps,” Reich said. “It’s a question of who can stay healthy, who can be consistent and who can contribute on special teams for that fourth and fifth spot.

The Colts have several position battles to watch during training camp and the preseason games, but the wide receiver room might have the most capable bodies competing for just a few spots.

Having that kind of depth isn’t something Reich will be too upset about.

I would love to get a link to this mystery article. I follow the Colts and football pretty closely  and I sure don’t remember any article ever talking about going with just 4 WR’s on a 53 man roster.

There was an article where he talked about competition for that 5th spot. He didn't say we were only keeping so many, but the way it was framed made me think their target was 5. Pretty sure it was Reich. I'll look for the article in a bit.

Personally I think we keep 5, but I can see 6 too with all the adds/rooks/recoveries/projects, etc.  TY, Cain, Campbell, Funch, and Rogers IMO are the base 5. I'd bet they will keep one at minimum on the PS. IMO, Fountain, Pascal, or Dulin could end up on the PS, perhaps two. And if Cain's recovery is slow, he could end up on the PUP and we keep another.

As far as Funch is concerned, if they use him primarily at the routes he's good at (that they published), he'll be pretty limited at X. If Cain comes back fast, even more limited. I think his sweet spot is going to be as big-slot, and RZ/short-yardage X.

Absolutely they are...as long as guys stay healthy and they get some progression from their young playmakers (which literally every team hopes for). The Foles hate by so many Colts fans is funny to me. It's not really a thing here...but on other Colts sites...it's rampant.

Fans will trash Foles, a backup who led his team to a Super Bowl win and has played well the past two seasons, and then say the Colts can't afford to trade Brissett because he can step and win games if Luck gets hurt for a few weeks. Somehow Foles doesn't improve a roster that went to the AFC Championship with Bortles at QB a couple years ago...but Brissett can win games with the Colts.

i don't get the Foles hate.....

I think Brissett is a decent QB and deserves a chance, but I'm not afraid of letting him go.

  12. We've got a solid group of DBs this year. Thinking we keep at minimum 8 DBs, maybe even 9 to 10. We'll be cutting some good players (from many positions) to get down to 53. I think I read that 70ish % of the time we had 3 CBs on the field, and 20ish % (might have been a little lower) we had 3 Ss.

    My prediction for the rooks

RYS is starting by mid season

    Willis doesn't make the 53

    Tell makes the PC

    Locks (7)

    S - Hooker, Geathers

CB - Desir, Moore, RYS, Harriston, Wilson

    Decent chance

S - Kindred, Odum, and Farley if healthy

    CB - Collins, Tell

    Longshot

    S - Willis, Milligan, Johnson

    CB - Milton, Taylor

Brady and Brees, and Manning all have comeback player of the year awards after missing the entire last season. All 3 won SBs after that fact. Andrew just won CBP of the year last year. Maybe its good luck?

If Luck wins a SB this year, I'll say it's good luck lol.,.. Until then, bad luck :-)

Yeah...JAC is just spending all of cap available to them now. Not sure how that makes them poorly-run. From 2014-17, they averaged like $30M+ in cap space each season. It's only the past two years that they have run up against it...because they feel they have a team that can win the Super Bowl. It certainly hasn't stopped them from adding talent. And as some of the FA contracts of the past few years start to fall off...they will have money to retain their core talent (if they want to).

yup. they have a top 5 D. they could make a serious run if they can turn around their bottom 10 offense. with Foles, they could end up being the most improved team in the league this year. i don't think he's an A-list QB, but he's a big upgrade to Bortles. IMO, they are our comp for the AFC South.

I was wondering about his 40 time. Says here it was 4.75 which is not blazing but considering he was 6’5-1/2” and 262 lbs at the time, it’s respectable.

He may not be able to run away from some defenders but he can certainly box them out.

It also said a few teams were interested in him.

i remember that. his measurements would have put him 6th at the combine among TEs.

and it's worth mentioning he's never ran/trained on the 40 as he did not play FB in college.

i'd bet if you lined Ebron, Doyle, and Cox up and asked them to run, Cox would fair just fine right now.

Andrew has had 3 maybe 4 injuries since the beginning of his career, manning only missed one season here. So no worries the bad luck was all Bob's.

when your franchise QBs miss a whole season, it's bad luck....

  17. 2 hours ago, Chloe6124 said:

You have a good point with having Funchess. I can’t wait to see if he brings something different then Ebron.

I wish it was football season already. Lol

    you and me both.

the period between basketball and football sucks (base) balls.

the only thing i'm enjoying now is the women's WC.

i'm still leaning towards thinking we'll keep 6 WRs this season given all the puts and takes. DF it TE-lite, Cain coming back from injury, PC a rook, TY coming off being banged up, Fountain improving, Roger's reliability and cross training..... and sheet might happen like Cain being pup'd and I think Fountain can spend another year on the PS.

It was kind of fun to go back and watch bob sanders highlights.

and very hard to watch the D for all those games without him....

truly epic player with truly epic injury issues...

i know all teams go through injuries, but seems like we've been especially cursed with Sanders, Manning, and Luck. That's 3 of my five favorite Colts lol.

  19. i remember a few of his highlights. you can tell he played Basketball.

if he's improved on the route running, could be a very nice season for him.

with all the added weapons, and TE-lite Funchess, I think we might end up keeping only 3 with one more on the PS. that is, assuming everyone is healthy.
