What are you talking about?  They didn't like him as a pro. :)

He's from a small school / small conference.

It's pretty much a given that the overwhelming majority of those from small schools are disadvantaged from the start when it comes to pre-draft ratings. They don't get TV time for their games, they don't have scouts at games during the season, they don't get invited to the combines all that often, etc..

  2. Average Grade B- or C+

    2-2

    COLTS

    Rock Ya-Sin, CB, Temple

    Grade: B

The Colts got a great season from Pierre Desir last year, they need help on the other side. I think this pick makes all the sense in the world for the Indianapolis Colts. Good pick and they've got a lot of picks and will be very active today.

    2-17

    COLTS

    Ben Banogu, EDGE, TCU

    Grade: B

This guy is a DPR (designated pass rusher). He's gonna play on third down. The Colts need to get better on third down. I like this pick. I don't love it, but here's the deal in that division now you better be able to rush the passer.

    2-27

    COLTS

    Parris Campbell, WR, Ohio State

    Grade: A

GM Chris Ballard is knocking it out of the park. He is one of my favorite receivers. One of my No. 1 guys in this draft as it relates to outside guys. He can flat out fly. He was misused at Ohio State.

    3-25

    COLTS

    Bobby Okereke, LB, Stanford

    Grade: C

This is a project and they hope he can develop and show some ability. Watch out for the Colts, they have a chance to be really good on defense.

    4-7

    COLTS

    Khari Willis, S, Michigan State

    Grade: C
Willis was a late-riser who takes an extra second to recognize route combinations yet gets his hands on the football often. He's rangy as a tackler but a below-average athlete for the position with good strength.

    5-6

    COLTS

    Marvell Tell III, S, USC

    Grade: B-
Tell can look like a future All-Pro one game then a practice squad player the next. He's a tall, lanky, ridiculously explosive safety with an inconsistent motor and tackling willingness. Expect him to contribute on special teams out the gate.

    5-26

    COLTS

    EJ Speed, LB, Tarleton State

    Grade: D+
Speed is a tall, lanky linebacker with impressive athleticism who had a productive career but is a project mainly because he's making the gigantic jump from playing at Tarleton State to the NFL. Likely should have been a UDFA.

    6-26

    COLTS

    Gerri Green, DE, Mississippi State

    Grade: C
Green represents what's become normal for Mississippi State defenders. He's ultra-physical and never stops moving. He's not a great athlete for the edge rusher spot and lacks a variety of pass-rushing moves.

    7-26

    COLTS

    Jackson Barton, OT, Utah

    Grade: B+
Barton isn't a stellar athlete but he's one of the most under control tackle in this class, and he has serious NFL tackle size. Plus ability as a pass blocker. He has the profile of someone you want to gamble on in the seventh round.

    7-32

    COLTS

    Javon Patterson, G, Ole Miss

    Grade: B+
Patterson was an unspectacular yet solid guard at Ole Miss for multiple seasons. He doesn't have ideal length and must pack some weight onto his frame, but he's the type of guy that can emerge with the right coaching.

  3. Here's CBS's grade on Parris. Also speaks to his use, or misuse at OSU. Like I mentioned above, I could see him in X or slot (he played some type of limited Z at OSU). I like him, he's too raw at this point for an A (more like a B due to his readiness) . I'd give him an A+ in potential though.

Fountain has been working really hard with a WR coach. Hopefully it will pay off and if not with us he can be a nfl receiver.

welp, he was drafted R5 before cain so i doubt they lose patience with him this fast. like i said, pretty sure they looked at him as raw project when they drafted him. i'd assume they'll give him at least 2 years of development before throwing in the towel. he can bounce back and forth to the roster and practice squad.

in all fairness, with Luck coming back from injury, i'm sure most of the WRs suffered a bit in the development area. i'd guess the coaches were pretty stingy with WR reps in practice, and limited them to the starters and immediate backups while luck was sticking his toes back in the water.

Sadly it's part of the ESPN+ crap they've been trying to get people to pay for for years.  Sigh. Any other network, maybe.. but ESPN is so full of nonsense that it's sad he picked this as his place to go.  I'd pay NFL Network for the show, but never ESPN.

    get Kodi brother

3 speed WR's in the last 2 years.  Who? Campbell and ? Cain? He's a complete unknown.  Do you consider Funchess a major speed receiver?  He didn't really show that in Carolina.  Sure, he SHOULD have been breakaway, but I rarely saw any of that in his play in my opinion.  I HOPE these guys all step up, but I have more at least a little more confidence in our Rookie already than I do in Funchess or a yet to be proven/coming back from injury Cain.

    Cain 4.43 (super fast)

    Fountain 4.46 (fast)

    Campbell 4.31 (faster than fast)

I wasn't suggesting that Funchess be a key downfield threat.

Funchess is possession guy, not really a speed guy. Ran a 4.7 at that combine.

He supposedly ran a 4.47 and 4.53 at his pro day, but pro days are notoriously generous to their kids. I'd say realistically he's faster than his combine 4.7, but not near as fast as his pro day. I'd guess he's likely in the 4.6 range currently, which is not bad for a TE-lite or big possession WR. I'm not sold on DF at all. I certainly want him to succeed though. I think his best long term position would be big-slot as opposed to X (where a lot of folks see him destined for).

Fountain was a project from the start, and more of a developmental pick. He's got the speed and raw tools, just needs to polish the route running side of his game. Campbell is limited in the route space too, but at least he played at a major D1.

Ultimately You want TY at Z and Cain at X. Campbell played a Z but OSU boxed him in to limited routes. He could easily end up at slot, and wouldn't shock me to see him get a try at X.

If TY starts to slow, Parris could end up at Z, and TY could be a beast at slot.

  7. Now this looks like a great small school find

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts on Saturday selected linebacker EJ Speed with the 164h-overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Speed — who stands at 6-foot-4 and weighs 230 pounds — was a stat sheet-stuffing specialist at Division II Tarleton State, where he collected 231 total tackles (36 for a loss) with 11.5 sacks, 10 passes defensed, three interceptions, eight forced fumbles and three blocked kicks over his 35-game career.

Last year, Speed was a force for the Texans, collecting 106 total tackles (12.5 for a loss) with 5.0 sacks, one interceptions, four passes defensed, eight quarterback hits and two forced fumbles.

As of now, the Colts’ next pick is Saturday in the sixth round (199th overall).

It could, but until it happens, I can only base Reich's offense by what I see

Had Cain not went down last year, I think we would have seen more verts last year. By all reports he had locked down X before getting hurt and folks were saying he was looking very good on deep balls with Luck.

I'd love TY/Cain/Campbell + Ebron or Funchess in a 4 vert. You could even use Hines who has serious wheels too.

It's not just scouting, it coaching, schemes, and correct play calling too. And players stepping up their game each week and getting better.

sure there are a lot of things that go into an individual's success.

doesn't distract from the fact a lot of scouts get things wrong.

    some do good, some don't.

Marvell Tell had a .9725 rating on 247 coming out of high school, and was the #59th ranked prospect in the country, he was a high 4*, kid was highly regarded. He flashed at USC, I remember some from the games against ND, but again this is a pick based on potential. Good, solid pick. Great value.

yup, like i posted above, i remember him coming out of HS when ND recruited him. really wanted him

Great pick, love it... he's an athletic freak with great movement and change of direction skills. Not a great tackler for the position.... this along with the athleticism made some teams wonder if he can transition to CB... IMO we will use him as a special teams ace and moveable piece along the backfield.... maybe he can be in the slot in sub packages...

I think both RYS and TEll will fit in quickly to sub packages. Love it too.

I trust true scouts evaluation and (especially) fit to 'their team' over media 'experts' who get info from scouts with no clue how to slot them to teams, just listing by their perceived BPA.

We only have one SB winner every year. We only have 12 playoff teams every year. And we have many teams that just stink. Every one of those teams spend a boat load on scouting. Only a few get it really right each year.

obviously we don't have the deep threat outside of  Hilton to attack deep, but you need to judge Riech's play calling not his career. Even in philly, they didn't attack deep. Their whole offense was running the ball with Ajayi and Blount and getting the ball to Ertz and Burton and occasionally go deep with Jeffery and Alghor. Also just because campbell wasn't used to attack defenses deep, doesn't mean he can't. Ohio State basically just used him in space. Reich is not that simple.

Reich didn't call plays in Philly. He basically managed Pederson's scheme and relayed Pederson's calls. That's why I don't see our O as permanently being a mirror to Philly. I think we're trying to tweak for added vertical attack (hence the 3 speed WRs in the last 2 years)

I said the same thing about Parris (and OSU) above to Luck4Pres

Throw away that draft board, you will do a favor for yourself. I mean it. :) I do use to create my own composite board, from cca 10 different boards (CBS, pff, Matt Miller and many more), and the board never was so much off than this year. Even in the second round, the terms "reach" and "steal" lost their meanings because there were not only a handful of weird picks, but practically all teams went all over the board. This years draft class is just a big messy mix of tons of similarly graded players and everyone picks by their own preference and taste, from all over.

sure they were off in terms of where teams drafted guys.

but does that mean they were wrong in terms of evaluation.

keep it handy and grade it after the season
