I'm willing to bet 99% of the people giving grades today have watched a grand total of ZERO snaps of EJ Speed...

I give him an A+ for name off the bat

This is why when I grade this one I will not put any grade on it unless I find at least 2-3 games of him... I think I can safely say I follow the draft more than most people and not only have I not watched EJ Speed, but I just learned that there is such a thing as Tarleton State(and my phone just tried to auto-correct it so even our future overlords the computers don't know shot about it).

i was looking for film on him earlier, and was not successful lol.

you can typically find highlight cuts of guys, but you can't grade a guy on a highlight cut. bad plays don't make the highlights :-)

Good ones get promoted and eventually become GM's one day ( Chris Ballard ).  Others become TV personalities...

Besides, the meetings where you have to report in front of the GM, directors, and other scouts.  Then the discussions/debates begin.  It's never about 1 scout.

and a lot of GMs get fired after they get promoted.

area scouts are responsible for a group of guys, and they "sell" leadership on that guy. Ballard used to be the SW Scout for the Bears. his boss said he was great at selling "his" guys. it's never about one scout, but one scout is basically reporting out on a guy, and if he sells good (like Ballard), he has a lot to do with it. we're way off tangent..

My wild guess.  To TB for Gerald McCoy.  They have been trying to trade him and with Jacoby they get a player.  Colts get McCoy without having to compete with other teams to sign him and they have the space for his contract.

i'd love mccoy if we could make it work. he's 31 but still has a little tread.

These are the kind of posts that might bite  you in the butt in a yr.   but kudos to you for being upfront about it

They are not mine. They are from CBS sports.

I'll put mine out tomorrow and let people melt down :-)

I'm not afraid to be honest. People who think every pick is amazing are pretty silly.

Sunshine pumping is for September thru January :-) when we are winning games.

My bad.  I was too specific in the CBS reference...I was speaking of general grades by the industry, and most if not all positive grades were attributable to Q last year.  Most experts were neutral at best about the rest of our draft...as were our fans.

CBS actually gave Q a B individually. They said he was a rock star, and the cleanest player in the draft, but it was simply too early in the draft to take a G. So others actually pulled it up to B+

Being a ND fan, I loved the draft. I thought Braden was a good pick too.

Irish.  I like you.  I really do.  Love the interaction. And think you are one of the best posters on THIS board   But I think think the trade back (which was brilliant) afforded the opportunity to draft a WR in the second.   Just my opinion of course.

But Ballard was able to get IMO the best WR in the draft FOR THE COLTS

in no no way shape or form do I agree that he was looking at any other WR in this draft earlier

I actually think had the run on WR not gone so quick he would have waited.

He got his guy.    And as you know I was not high on a WR pick.   I can see the value and and am actually excited about the pick.   PC will seriously # up some defenses

you're making as many assumptions as anyone else (me included). we don't know if the trade back was the hope all along, or a product of someone not being available. none of us know the original plan, or how close or far off we ended up from that original plan.

most of the talking heads and mocks predicted the run on WR in the second, so i doubt it surprised Ballard and made him pull the trigger earlier than planned.

on PC. I like him, but i think you're a bit biased :-), and that's OK. just because he was our pick, doesn't mean he was at the top of our WR board. i do think he'll be very good if used correctly, and i'm very optimistic. i'm just happy to have a speed guy that might be able to stretch.

The writers and fans alike, they grade these based on what they’ve seen so far in college, their measurables, how they assume they can translate their skills into the nfl and as you said, what else do they have to write about until training camps start.

What never really ally gets written about well is how a player actually should grade out inside a certain system. For instance, many QB’s get dinged for playing in a spread offense and of course now are expected to play in a pro set offense behind center. You can grade that kid based on his college skills, his measurables, his leadership qualities but adjusting for college play and what he is walking into is tough to do. Like does this new QB that ranks top of the QB list of the writers but comes in with a 32 ranked oline, bad receivers and new coaching systems. Vs a number 4 ranked QB by the same writers yet they actually have some pieces to succeed with already in place.

Ive always felt too many teams pick players with these traits that are hot for the nfl but your scheme isn’t quite built for that type of player and the player fails. Sometimes it’s because he just doesn’t fit and lb’ers seem to really fit that problem. Are they a 3-4 or 4-3 guy, those tweeners just ughhh. Crazy skills and stats and athletes but just hard to fit in.

So so let’s write about that. Let’s project a grade on a scheme fit guy more than the 168th pick spot of the draft. Idk

NFL.com and The Draft Network at least make an effort to talk about scheme fit pre-draft in their profiles. I'm sure the team scouts dig into that. We just don't see a lot of critical thinking or grading post draft.

NFL.com draft grades (post draft) for all the teams and individual players are more or less sunshine pumping and doesn't address scheme fit. Heck, I think more than half the teams got As...

    Spin What?!?

I wanted a WR at pick 59 too.   I was glad it came.    But Ballard passed THREE TIMES and went defense the other two.   I don’t have to spin anything.   YOU’RE the one who is spinning, not me.

If Ballard only had one pick in each round, he prioritized your position non higher than third.   You lose again!

And again...  just two WR picks in the entire first round.   You can keep spitting into the wind and telling yourself that moisture is rain, but it’s not.    You’re losing, even if you think otherwise.

    this is simple.

is a 2nd round pick early, and substantial draft capital? the answer is yes on both counts.

and you have zero clue what the plan was. there were a ton of WRs left at 34 and 46, so why wouldn't you prioritize others if you feel they might not be there. WR as noted was going to be very deep in the 2nd and 3rd.

and yes, only two were picked. one was picked by the smartest GM/Coach ever... what does that say about WRs in the 1st?

are you still upset about WR study lacking comparative data, definition, or accounting for standard/simple things like injury?

    Competition

idk. if you are keeping JB, he really won't have comp for QB2 anyway.

if you want a guy just to go to camp and compete with walker, why not just go with an undrafted rookie like they turned away that might have a higher ceiling than Kelly and no baggage. why bring in a guy that got released due to arrest? He's not really ever been a humble team guy..

IMO...the ability to sign guys like this now is a benefit to being so conservative at the beginning of the free agency period.  We can easily sign this dude over any of these other teams if we really want him.  It's time to fill our remaining holes now that the draft has ended.

i want to use all the money we can that won't impact next year.

would love to fill some holes or simply upgrade with some senior guys while the younger develop.

    Overview

Highly decorated developmental size/speed receiver from an unsuccessful program on the DII level. Dulin was a beacon of light for the Pioneers racking up 26 total touchdowns over the last two years as a pass catcher, ball carrier and kick returner. The jump in competition is substantial and may be too much to overcome and his route work is very basic right now. However, his size, speed and ball skills give him a chance while his kick return value could make him a day three selection worthy of stashing and developing.

    Apparently, it’s news to you....

Ballard didn’t take a WR early.

    He passed at pick 26.

    He passed at pick 34.

    He passed at pick 46.

He finally grabbed one in his 4th opportunity at pick 59.    The “never grab a WR early” crowd have nothing to disapprove of.  Ballard apparently agreed with us.

And in the entire first round, just 2 WRs taken.   More evidence for our side, not yours.

A second round pick is early. and it's substantial draft capital.

And like the above says, they might have been looking at one earlier.

You can't spin this one away. You can have a hundred picks in the second round, any pick in the second round is "early" and a significant investment with significant expectation.

It's just like one of "your side" said "Belichick would never", and he ended up taking one in the first. And as you know, 1st and 2nd have always been described as early. 3-5 middle, and 6-7 late. Some even describe 3rd as early.

I was also on record if you recall saying i didn't want a WR in the 1st, and that I wanted one either at 34 or 59. And 59 it was...

  14. Only time will tell.

2017's draft class rated average post draft, was average in it's rookie season, with a few improving as sophs. Hooker was expected to be good as the first pick, but Mack was a huge value in 2018, and Walker while not a stud, is above average IMO, and was obviously worth the 7th. Only a couple flamed out.

2018's draft class was graded B+ post draft, was A in it's rookie season, and hopefully A+ coming up.

Hoping 2019's C+ or B- rating looks silly by mid season. I think RYS will make an impact early in all the 3CB packages we run, and Campbell could be specialist early and monster later.
