  1. True statement, but it's also true that Brown blew his block, very badly.  He doesn't get many opportunities anymore so it stands out when he makes a big error like that.

Many of us are of the opinion that Brown is a pretty terrible blocker.  Few doubt his ability as a runner (or at least I don't), but he just won't see many snaps if he's deemed a liability in the passing game.  Fear of trusting Brown with pass blocking duties for extended periods were a primary motivator in the TRich trade, IMO.

can you give me some more examples of blocks that he has blown. it should be very easy.

  2. Our run blocking this year is also (at least the past 2 weeks) way improved.  Donnie is not a power runner, he needs a hole and open space -- I don't have the raw stats on it, but it seemed like last year Donnie was getting hit behind or at the line more often than not.  Give him some space, and he is our most dangerous break-away RB.

You are probably right that Trent and Bradshaw help him out quite a bit, but I think the fact that we have a more balanced offense and a seemingly much better run-blocking OL than we have had in recent years helps quite a bit, too.  Donnie Brown has not lived up to his first-round hype, and parts of that are because he has battled injuries and parts of that are because we have not had consistent OL play for the vast majority of his career, especially in terms of run blocking.  He has also struggled, IMO, because he has never really had a decent complimentary back -- he and Addai are somewhat similar, and it wasn't until late last year that Ballard seemed to really establish himself as a kind of 'pounder' RB.

That said, with a solid smash-mouth back and a good line, Donnie is finally starting to be used properly in the NFL.  Worth a 1st round pick, probably not.  However, if you look around the league, there are very few teams that have a legitimate threat to be on the field exclusively as an every down back (Adrian Peterson, IMO, is the only bonafide every down, every play, no need for a change of pace back in the NFL).

I hope we keep Brown next year, assuming he is willing to sign for cheaper than his first-round contract.  His speed, pass-catching ability, ability to hold on to the football, and his on/off-field character are all reasons why I like Donnie a lot as a Colt -- with T-Rich and Bradshaw/Ballard, I think we can keep Donnie healthy and really utilize him as a threat to opposing defenses.

i posted the same thing sunday. he was a low 1st round pick. i don't understand why people expect him to be a top rb.

  3. a bad line and getting hurt has been his biggest issues. he has a 4.2 ypc avg for his career compared to the great trent richardson's 3.5ypc who everyone loves. if the line keeps improving, i think he will be a good back for the colts. i'mnot saying he is a every down back, but there are very few of them in the nfl now. posters complain about him being a 1st round pick, but he was a low 1st round pick and top players are very rare at that part of the draft.

  4. Hindsight is always 20-20 but the Colts should have tried harder to keep Wheeler. I know the Colts were in cap space trouble but it is what it is.

the reason the colts were in that situation is because they made bad decisions in over paying their own free agents instead of possibly letting them walk with lower offers.

  5. i am surprised by the posts in this thread. where are all the pat lovers at now? a couple years ago, and even just before this season started, pat was the golden child for almost every poster. i only remember a couple posters agreeing with me that pat wasn't that good and conner was better.

  6. I have said over and over that Conner is the most effective against the run we have.  Freeman just keeps on playin on :)  Conner looked rusty on a couple of plays until he got into the flow, but made a couple of really nice stops!!  Still not liking Sheppard too much however.   :)

One thing I forgot IMO Connor and Freeman had something to do with abandoning the running game !

They certainly did make a difference and neither of our lines played better than decent.

I did get off on Reddings great play.

I agree in the run game...Conner was rusty early...great to have him back....Wish Pat could stay on the field.  I was not thrilled with Pat's play on the 57 yard pass play to Clay in the Dolphin loss, but it was not just his fault he should have had support...

conner only played 16 plays (two in the 1st half) and most were at the end. he had 4 tackles and a fumble recovery. all of the plays were obvious passing situations. i have always liked him, and don't understand why he doesn't play more.

  7. we really need a good guy next to him

conner is our best ilber after freeman.  i have no idea why he didnt start but the coaches better not make that mistake again.

agreed. i didn't see conner in the game that much. does anyone know how many plays he played?

i just re-watched the game. conner played 16 plays (almost all at the end) and had 4 tackles and a fumble recovery. all his time was on obvious passing downs. i don't think it had anything to do with a injury. i don't know what they see in sheppard.

  8. I don't know why this guy is and NFL linebacker? He looked terrible again today. He cant tackle worth a crap. He doesn't run worth a crap. I don't get. Conner was in there late in the game, thank god. How does this guy get the call over Conner? He is pathetic. I don't want to pick on him but I can't stand to watch him play. He doesn't lower his shoulder to tackle. Reaches and grabs and tries to throw runners down. It's ridiculous. This is the NFL man, not Jr football.

i would like this, but i have used my 24 hr quota again.

  9. we really need a good guy next to him

  10. The guy arguing with you is just trying to pick a fight about richsrdson. Someone claimed he got 4ypc every run, you showed that he didn't. You're right.

i know. a lot of times i read a post i am going to respond to twice or more because sometimes i don't get the meaning of it right the first time.

  11. You are being critical of Richardson for not getting that many yards per carry.  McGahee under similar conditions as Richardson did even worse.

no, i was responding to someone that said he consistently got 4ypc. read the post i quoted!

  12. Really this isn't fair at all for Richardson.  You can't expect a guy to change teams that suddenly, get 2 practices with their new team and hold the playbook in his hands for 3 days and be at full speed.

How many yards did Willis McGahee average for the Browns today??  1.1 yards

    8 carries for 9 yards.

what does this have to do with my post responding to someones post?

  13. people are saying bringing in a #1 rb motivated bradshaw ,that's just laughable!! then why wasn't he equally motivated when he was behind ballard? people are just making things up to justify their position on the trade. like some have said, give it a few games and then judge the trade.

  14. last year the colts traded a 2nd for a starting cb. it's a safe statement that cb's are of much more importance than rb's in the current nfl. so why would you give up more for the equivalent level rb as you did for a cb? people are acting like he is a peterson like player, he isn't even close, he is comparable to current starting low 1st to 3rd round rb's. giving up a 2nd (i wouldn't be real happy) or 3rd (fine with me) is better. people are saying he is a 3rd pick talent, but he hasn't shown it in a year and two games. what's more important, being "a beast in college" (as a lot of posters have said) or what you have done as a pro?

A first-round pick for Trent Richardson? No-brainer for Browns

I think it's pretty fair to base an opinion of a trade off of the unsolicited opinions that tend to trickle in. And the overwhelming majority of the texts, calls and emails I received from GMs, scouts and execs was that the Browns did very well in this trade.

Receiving a first-round pick for a running back is pretty good work in this day and age, even for one who was a recent top-five pick.

One exec I respect deeply, who has watched Richardson closely during his brief NFL career, expressed his initial reaction to this deal: "The Colts panicked. A first-round pick? I don't believe it."

A scout who did plenty of work on Richardson was flabbergasted by the deal: "Weird trade by Indy," he sent via text. "A first for an adequate back with injury issues? They could get that player next year in the mid to late rounds. Get an adequate dude for a later pick. Everyone has depth at that position."

One GM asked who the Browns were going to go with at running back, and I explained they were bringing in free agent Willis McGahee. His response: "Why didn't the Colts do that first before giving up a 1?"

I was in contact with a few team sources who had running backs on their roster who are expendable, and all said they never got a call from the Colts to explore what it would take to get their guys. "I wish I had [called the Colts]," one noted, "especially after seeing this trade."

Colts trade for Trent Richardson is a bold, but bad, move

    than you for posting this!

i couldn't have agreed more with what these professionals, not fans, bloggers, or reporters are saying!

  16. So this all happened in the early hours of the morning for me, missed about 10 pages of this thread. I also had to check this morning I hadn't dreamed the trade! After wading through the previous pages and had a bit of time to reflect my thoughts are:

    • Like a lot I was a bit hmm about giving up a 1st, especially for a RB, but the perception of this will change depending on where we pick. Whether this is the correct perception or not comes down to you own draft philosophy. I agree with a number of people that a 1st rounder is no guarantee of hitting on the pick but it does increase your chance.
    • Somewhat linked to the above but if Richardson (TRich/Trent/TDog) performs well here then people will see it as a good value trade. The question then is where do we set the bar in terms of performance, 1000 yards? I don't expect us to have landed a Peterson, but a solid back say at a Charles/Forte level could really help push this O onto the next level. Time will tell and hindsight will be applied in all revisionist history of this trade :P.
    • People have pointed at his stats being underwhelming and I can see the point being made but I do think teams stacked the box to  him and I do think he's never been fully fit as yet. Also a change of coaching etc may work wonders, especially if he wasn't feeling loved in Cleveland. Add in actually having QB that teams have to respect and I think he can improve and also help Luck improve. Especially as he's not a bad pass blocker.
    • Though I don't think our O line is the finished article by any means they have looked good with the run game at least.
    • With the Browns swallowing the bonus he's a pretty good cap value player IMO.

Overall it's a time will judge trade, if it comes off Grigson is a genius, if it doesn't and whoever the Browns take with our pick pays off it will be shoved in our face. As a fan I'm happy, I like Richardson as a player but taking the blue tinted glasses off I think it's a heck of a gamble. I still firmly believe too almost no RB is worth a 1st rounder in the modern game.

i have reached my like quota, so i have to clutter the thread with the old way of agreeing with a post.

  17. Yes, we agree on this one completely. When I said he was not fast. i was talking about game changing speed like Lynch or Peterson:

It's not that Richardson can't be a productive back for the Colts. He's clearly their best option after starter Vick Ballard sustained a season-ending knee injury. It's just that Richardson isn't special. He averaged 3.6 yards per carry in his first season (granted, he didn't have much help) and he didn't have the explosive speed to be a game-breaker. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9691534/trent-richardson-game-changer

I think what is concerning about this deal is that the Colts have good RBs currently and Ballard will be back next year. To give a number one NOW is that part that does not make sense. I don't see the Colts contending this year which would be the only reason to do this deal if you felt the team was one stud RB away from making the SB. I would more expected this deal from the Broncos who could use a stud RB to make a legit run in the playoffs as defenses will take away/slow down Manning's passing attack.

I also agree about not giving a number one for any RB. But still there is a part of me that gets the fact that the OC wants to run more but I think the Colts could have accomplished that with the guys they have and even moreso next season when Ballard is back.
