  1. There are several options. I am not saying we will trade up. I am saying that I believe we will trade up before we trade down.

For example, lets imagine that cooper falls to 15. If the Colts are high on him (and might be), it would be worth giving up our 3rd with NO to secure him, over taking an extra 4th to move back to 30 and pick up another 4th.

This thing can go down several ways, but I don't see us trading back just because we are starting off down two picks in the first 5 rounds.

Our 1st and 3rd isn't going to land us anywhere near the top-15. Our 1st could possibly land us two 2nd's though. As others have said, there is no point in reaching on players who could be had later on. I'd much rather see the Colts gain extra picks, while still being able to target quality, and get quantity in return.

I'd be surprised if we stay at #24. The only way I see us staying there is if Cooper or Rhodes is there.

  2. Listen, I do not care that he played 3-4 in college. The pro's are a different story and by the way, Mathis is bigger than Jones, not by much but a little none the less. lets' face it, if the Colts weren't in a desperate situation last season with so much roster turnover, Mathis likely wouldn't be here either. He was kept because they wanted a little leadership kept on defense from the old regime.

I get tired of the comparisons to other players anyway. Just because 1 or 2  guys around the same size have had success, don't mean somebody that has never played a snap in the NFL is going to have success. IMO this will more than likely be Mathis' last season with the Colts unless he really shine's playing the weak side.

Plenty of guy's have to change positions in the NFL, because they are tweener's and Jones is a tweener whether people don't want to admit it or not. Like I said, Mayock studies tape relentlessly and he agree's that the 4-3 would be the better fit for Jones. If we draft him to play rush LBer, then I hope he prove's me wrong, but I'm not going to count on him being a stud.

8 million a year for a guy to give "a little leadership"? haha... OK... I believe the Colts seen a little more in Mathis than just a "leadership" role, but whatever.... I wonder why Mayock has never stepped into a GM role or if he's even been offered one. I mean, you would think with all the film study and effort put into what he does, and the "high regard" he has, he would have teams knocking down his door for his scouting skill set.

  3. That 40 time is just awful and I don't know if he just had a really bad day or if he feels entitled, or what it was, but for a LBer his size to run that slow is inexcusable IMO. Charlie Casserly said a LBer his size has never made it in the NFL running that slow of a 40 time.

James Harrison ran a 4.85 40. Sorry, but 1/10 of a second isn't much faster. 4.5-4.6? Sure! But to say a guy "that slow" hasn't made it is ridiculous on Casserly's part. Harrison has been a terror for years and went undrafted only to become one of the top pass rushing OLB'ers in the league on top of DPOY.

  4.

IMO, his size says more of a SLBer in a 4-3. IMO, he's undersized to play in a 3-4. At 6'2" 241 lbs, that is small for an OLBer in the 3-4. For what ever it's worth, Mike Mayock see's it the same way. On all his projections, he always has Jones listed as a 4-3 LBer instead of a 3-4 LBer. This is part of what it says on NFL.com...

This is what I'm talking about.

Go tell that to James Harrison and our very own Robert Mathis, to which he's bigger than both. To what you had quoted at the bottom of your post, Jones started the last 2 years at Georgia and racked up 28 sacks in that time after transferring out of USC. The guy has played at an ALL AMERICAN level as a 3-4 OLB'er. Why would ANYONE want to take him out of a position he's dominated at, while being in the premier conference of college football?

  5. The 07' team was one of my favorites. Probably the most complete team we've had here in Indy. #1 ranked scoring D that actually could stop the run without Bob being in the box all the time, hence the fact he played every game that year and won DPOY. The injuries to Marvin and Dwight that year hurt us bad in having the chance to repeat.

That team and the 09' team were far and away better than the 06' team. Sad to think how many Superbowl's this team should have had between 05' and 09'.

  6. Lets not forget, he's displaying his speed outdoors, on crappy fields. Now he's gonna be indoors on a great field at least 8 games a year. We got a cheap, bigger, faster version of Garcon who I think has a larger upside. Unless he completely bombs this upcoming season I look for DHB to be a Colt for a while.

  7. Guys.. seriously.. He didn't have an awesome game against Bama (best OL in college football in some years) and still had 6 tackles, 2 sacks.

    In 2012 he had 85 tackles, 24 tackles-for-loss, 14.5 sacks, 1 interception, 7 forced fumbles, and 2 fumbles recovered.

and this guy it's not about stats either.. he plays the run really good, and he's a perfect fit.. can play both sides.. at #24 we should be grateful if he's there..

Its that mindset of thinking they are ALWAYS supposed to be in pass rush mode, a la Freeney and Mathis. I liked the tape myself as well because he shows A LOT of discipline in maintaining his ground and protecting against the screen which was what Bama was looking for, primarily on JJ's side. AJ looked to that side quite often to find JJ sitting in the hole and protecting his ground. Had he played that game like Freeney, in which every play is about shooting up field, Georgia would have been destroyed. JJ played a very smart game in keeping himself in or around the ball carrier rather than shooting up field every play, which was what Bama was hoping for.

Against the premier O-line in college football he played a very good game. People need to stop living in the Freeney-esque play that's been prevalent here in Indy so long. JJ showed his versatility in that he can play the pass and run just as well as he can rush the passer. THAT'S what we are looking for here in Indy now.

  8. No, he didn't. Morris was a big reason for Griffin's success, not the other way around. And yes, it was the OL and Shanny's scheme.

I'd HIGHLY doubt teams were game planning to stop Morris moreso than Griffin. And, yes, the scheme is the penultimate reason they succeeded like they did.

  9. Glad someone mentioned Alfred Morris. PRIME EXAMPLE OF WHY YOU DO NOT NEED AN "ELITE" RB! All you need is a good oline & any RB will shine. If not, then he shouldn't be playing RB. We don't need all these big name people & Grigson has shown that he doesn't care what your name is. Those of you expecting Lacy in the 1st, not saying it impossible..... but remember.... he's a "big name". We could grab a RB in the 4th or later.

RG3 had more to do with Morris' performance than their O-line did. When Cousins took over for RG3 against Cleveland, Morris had one of his lowest totals of the season rushing. Granted 80 yards is by no means bad but Vick had just as good of a day against them as Alfred did.

  10. Spot on, it is his weight that I like. 250 lbs is a good size for either OLB or MLB, Pagano runs a hybrid so he will move McNary around a lot, if he makes the team. I heard Chappell on Grady and Big Joe, talking about the draft and the Colt's need for a pass rusher other than Mathis. Chappell kept saying where is it going to come from, I think that Pagano will use multiple looks and exotic blitz packages to generate a good pass rush.

When you have a good secondary you can do that. Rex really doesn't have great pass rushers in New York but he had a secondary that could give him a little more time with his front 7 to disguise blitzes better because he knew the back-end would more than likely hold up.

If Toler is as good as advertised, and with what we already know we have in Vontae, Pagano could easily do the same thing in letting his secondary help with his blitz packages. I think we are quite a bit like the Jets in the fact that we don't have "great" pass rushers but given a way and time they will be able to produce.

  11. This review/clip is actually closer to a week old. They did a small piece day before yesterday on the colts draft possibilities and they were all mixed up. They even said we could wait till the second round to take Manti Teo'....ahh...duh! We don't have a 2nd round pick! I don't think these guys are doing very much homework before they comment...they're just picking out well known/frequently talked about names.

I do think we should seriously consider WR in round 1. I expect Cordarrell Patterson, Tavon Austin, and possibly Keenan Allen to be off the board by 24. If Allen or Justin Hunter are available they would be great pickups. DeAndre Hopkins is no slouch either.

John Simon, DE, Ohio State - This guy in the 3rd round would be a solid guy to add some pass rush ability and a great motor. Here is a description from Walterfootball: He finished 2012 with 44 tackles, 14.5 tackles for a loss, nine sacks, one forced fumble and four passes broken up. The senior has one of the best motors of any defender in college football.

In round 4 we could go OG...there are a number of good guards in this draft...not just the three or four that NFL knuckleheads keep talking about.

Simon is a freaking hoss. I'm a Buckeye fan and he would be a great look later on but he has very little experience as an OLB. He played with his hand in the dirt primarily so I don't know how well he'd transition to OLB'er. He reminds me a lot of Jason Babin.

  12. The question is if Mclain were to clear waivers, does Pagano possess a large enough personality to "cure" him of his knuckleheaded behavior, like BB in NE. NE gets these headcases and turns lots of them into good players Corey Dillion, Randy Moss, etc..but you have your Chad Johnsons, and Albet Haynesworths. If the Colts think that through the strength of there head coach and locker room you could bring the best out of Mclain then take a chance on him, but if headaches far outweigh the production then let him slide on by.

By the way this is the second post this week that I have used the Patriots as a positive example, I feel ashamed.

Don't feel bad, I did the same on this same topic a couple weeks ago. I firmly believe that the Colts and Patriots are the VERY few than can turn "headcases" back to normal per se. Also, I just believe Oak is about as cancerous of a place as there is. I don't remember McClain ever having problems at Bama, but he's not the only one to go to Oak and all of a sudden be an "issue".

  13. My mistake, I thought it said 3/4 OLBer. Regardless the difference between a 4-3 MLBer and a 3-4 ILBer is minimal and if he was such a great talent then he shouldn't have had such disappointing seasons. I think people are trying to fool theirselves into believing that he can come here and be a difference maker so they are coming up with anything they can find to convince theirselves of it.

Actually the difference is more because as MLB he's been asked to play more in coverage, which yes is a weakness of his, but when it comes to tackling and shedding blockers and focusing primarily on stopping the run he is very good. He would be an upgrade over Conner with his run defense and tackling.

  14. Yes he's played so well, thats why a team thats desperate for talent just released a 23 yr. old LBer that was only set to make 4 mil. this yr. and has all world talent couldn't wait to get rid of him and all the fans loved the fact that he's gone. :slaphead:

Why pick his contract up now when teams can wait for him to hit waivers and clear. Stupid business to take him now..

  15. Go to any of the articles about him being waived and read the comments from Raiders fans. This is a team desperate for talent and you'll be hard pressed to find a single good comment from a Raider fan about his play on the field. We do not need to add bad locker room headache's on this team, he got into it with his head coach and was suspended. Not to mention his off the field issue's where he stuck a gun next to a mans head and fired off a round. He is a complete m-o-r-o-n. His play does not even come close to justifying overlooking his stupidity. If he was bad at coverage playing MLBer in a 4-3, he would be worse playing OLBer in a 3-4. I don't buy all the nonsense about a change of scenery either. You are who you are and geographical location isn't going to change that.

OLB'er?? He's a 3-4 ILB'er playing MLB in a 4-3. If put back into that role here next to Freeman he would excel greatly. He wouldn't be put into coverage as much as he is in Oak.

  16. Teo was exposed against Alabama missing tackles left and right against a semi-NFL caliber offense. He seems to be a very confused and gullible young man and that is the optimistic view of him and his involvement with the whole Catfish fiasco. His skills are not enough to warrant adding a potential sideshow. I don't expect the Colts to be interested.

Since the DHB signing and the added luxury of being able to go BPA, I am starting to warm up to drafting the safety from Florida International...Cyprien. It just might be time to grab the successor to Bethea who most likely will be gone after this season. He would also provide insurance this season in the event of an injury to either Landry or Bethea.

Especially since this is Bethea's last year under contract. I would be surprised if he's reaigned next year. Shamarko Thomas would be another I would look at if the happen to trade back and add extra picks
