If Ijalana makes the roster , he would provide depth at OT . That's the position he played at Rutgers and his first year with the Colts. I think many were projecting him at guard before signing Thomas and drafting the 2 O Lineman. But if he can't come back , we would have any Link as a proven back up OT.
Big Ben played at Villanova...

Ryan Grigson on Thornton...
" I thought he was the most dominant guard of the Senior Bowl. "
Exactly what I like to hear. There were references of him struggling against pass rushing DE's which won't be a problem here as with him playing guard he won't be going against them. Grigson did a heckuva job in this draft IMO.

Just outta curiousity?.... When you guys are talking about holmes size ....what about him isn't big enough?. Isn't he like 6'4?.
He's just a tad over 300lbs.
-
Considering Thornton could not block 1on1 in passing drills at the off-season bowl games, I am not shocked.
He did decent against Sylvester Williams from the little I remember but wasn't good against smaller DE's which as a RG he won't have to worry about.

I think Vaughn makes the roster
I think Nevis makes the roster
I think Cunningham makes the roster (but this one is more of long shot than the others)
And then some Notes
1. Our team looks so much better on paper than it did last season. OLB, NT, DE, S, OG, C look much improved.
2. The position I question the most is OT. I'm comfortable with AC and Cherilus, but I'm not sure about the guys behind them.
3. I really hope Ijalana finally makes his debut this year. He has 2 years of no playing, but has the potential to find a place on the line.
4. I really like a RB situation. There were a few guys in this years draft I would have liked, but I'm glad the coaches think we're fine.
5. I think the WR battle can be interesting. I think Wayne, DHB, and Hilton are locks, but after that I think anything is possible.
You can correlate 2 with 3. Ijalana can play both tackle spots along with guard. As most have said, he has to get healthy first but if he does he will be very valuable.

NFL.com, ESPN.com, BleacherReport.com, etc, etc, etc.
Did you really just quote Bleacher Report as a source and with the same regards as NFL.com/ESPN.com? Ehhhhhhhh.....

If you get the chance, look at his high-lite tape.... it's been posted in this thread...
It is one of the best high-lite tapes you will see from a safety.... he is a heat-seeking missile. He is a collision looking for a place to happen. This is a kid who loves contact. He loves to mix it up and he does so at high speed.
Don't get me wrong... he's not Ronnie Lott or Kenny Easley.... but this is no 6th round safety. He only went this low because of his double-knee surgeries which are said to be rehabbing very, very well.
This is a kid it's hard not to love him.... I'm predicting he could become a Colts nation favorite very quickly.....
One of my favorite picks this draft...!
You know, I'm not so sure that if Rambo were still on the board, that we still wouldn't have went with Boyett. He looks to me to be a better player. Even with the knee injuries and looking at him from 11', I still can't believe this guy fell in our lap. I honestly believe he is going to be our starting FS eventually.
And the references to Bob Sanders are unfair. I HIGHLY doubt Boyett will be used as our sole run stopper. Dungy and Polian didn't help Bob's injury problems at all. Grigson and Pagano are building a front 7 that can stop the run without NEEDING a safety in the box. Boyett can play center field and tee-off on WR's instead being beaten up on the front line.
I trust they'll use this guy right and help his career last for a while.

Idk much about this guy. Is he SS or FS? But he looks really fast
FS which could be major if they let Bethea walk after this year.

I understand and agree with you, but we could have traded, got more picks, then got better value or leverage to move up if needed or wanted.
Again, as I replied to you earlier, trading back guarantees you nothing but head count. We could have easily lost out on the players we could have targeted. Werner was obviously a guy they wanted that may not have lasted much longer. New England, who also needs pass rushers, could have jumped on him. You just don't know, and am glad they got such a talented player that late.
-
How do we know that he will not be. Never has played in our system, so we do not know.
If he were good, and Atlanta desperately needed pass rushers last year when Abraham had injuries late in the season, he would have had WAY MORE snaps than he got.
-
What happens if Sidbury turns out to be a monster in our D?
There have been no camps yet... Sidbury could very well turn out to be a great player but for one you can still never have enough pass rushers, and two I believe they are looking at life beyond Mathis with Werner.
I hope Sidbury turn out to be a good player but at the #24 pick there was NO OL talent of value to warrant being picked there. Werner was the BPA in my opinion and an obvious need of the Colts.
-
...and NOT CB. ;)
Had Werner went to the Vikes instead of Floyd, I'd have put a large wager on the Colts taking Rhodes. However, I'm ecstatic with Werner and glad he fell to us.
-
No. Just responding, but if you would like, check out my posts from last year's predraft and see for your self.
You mean you along with 9736382929 other people guessed Luck for the first pick? Toot that horn buddy...
And as far as pass rusher being a want?? It was a severe NEED. Mathis is really the only proven pass rusher the Colts have. Werner is an every down player who will be able to play BOTH OLB spots. The guy was a steal at #24 and obviously there were no O-line players of value that were on par with Werner.
On top of that, and even I was a proponent of trading back, but even that guarantees you nothing. Nor does it guarantee that Werner is still there. The only thing it guarantees is head count, but what good is that if you lose the people you were counting on being there. Then you're more than likely selecting a player graded lower at a position when you could have had better had you just stayed where you were.
You're fighting a losing battle...
-
Let me make amends... The Colts select the Cal center in the 3rd.
Man.. you just can't win

His measurables are similar to Paul Kruger and Jarrett Johnson.
I don't see how. As JWF stated his pass rush ability is so far beyond those two. He's much more comparable to Suggs or Lamar Woodley in that he's a pass rusher first who's outstanding against the run.

Warmack, the heralded guard from Alabama was asked today in Tennessee about good players he faced in college.
And he pointed to our own Drake Nevis as the best he faced....
Here's your story.....
http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/76317/warmack-salutes-colts-drake-nevis
Chance isn't the only one to have said that. There was an article about Nevis, when he got drafted, that had a couple of OL who got drafted the same year and played against Nevis as well who said the same thing. Some analysts even said he was the steal of the draft when he dropped to the 3rd and the Colts snagged him.
Nevis has been one of my favorites since he was drafted, but I just wish he could stay healthy.
-
if Sharrif Floyd wasn't selected by Minnesota do you think Clark W. Grigson would have selected him?
I would think pass rusher would be rated higher than DLineman, so no I don't think Floyd would have been picked had he been there.
-
Terrell SuggsI'm not gonna make any secret of the fact that I despise this pick. Werner is a 4-3 LDE IMO and I think we'll all regret this pick was ever made. I hope he proves me wrong but there is absolutely nothing impressive about Werner to me.
Demarcus Ware
James Harrison
Lamarr Woodley
Paul Krueger
Mike Vrabel
And the list goes on and on who were predominantly 4-3 DE's in college who ALL have went on to become good-great 3-4 outside linebackers in the NFL. Give the guy a chance before selling him short.
Werner has the versatility of being able to play both outside linebacker spots. He's an outstanding pass rusher who is also very good at playing the run. I think JWF's comparison of him to Suggs is spot on. I look for him to have a hand in the dirt as much as he stands up.
Give the guy a shot...
-
on film he looks like he could be a poor mans JJ Watt. 6'3'' 266 and athletic (JJ is 6'5'' 295 i believe).
I don't think the JJ Watt comparison is accurate because they play two separate positions. I think he's a guy who will end up being compared to Suggs in the Colts system.
-
With the drafting of Bjoern Werner, and with players like mathis, sidbury and walden on the roster, could there be a chance that we will use a bargaining chip in the form of jerry hughes? If this is the case, what could we get for him?
I'd say no because even in limited time last year Hughes produced. He's still a very good special teams guy as well. I'd much rather keep him around for his versatility and depth than try and see how late of a pick we can get for him, which is at most what we'd probably get for him.
-
If they didn't believe it why would they have drafted him?
Exactly!
-
It was a consensus top ten pick before the combine, he ran a 4.8 and fell on mocks and rankings
I wouldn't look too much into his combine speed. He's quick (very good initial burst), but not fast, which is more important, in my opinion, as a front line player. If he's having to make plays 40 yards down field then we have a whole separate problem. The guy takes great angles on the ball and is very rarely beaten.
It was a surprise pick for me as well, and I love the pick, but I think he has the skill-set and athleticism to play standing up or with a hand in the dirt. I think the comparison to Suggs is more accurate than the comparison to Krueger. A pass rusher who can play the run.
I think he suits this "hybrid" defense very well and can very well be an every down player. Walden? I don't him having enough of a pass rush skill-set to see him being an every down OLB.
-
I'd be willing to bet that no one had Werner on there top 20 list, if at all. Can you honestly say that you had him on your list for the Colts to pick? I can definitely say that I didn't. That doesn't mean I dont follow the draft process. Again like I said, I can't think of a post in any of the forums that even hinted that he could be a pick for the Colts. If they did, they should go buy a lottery ticket ASAP.
Because he was expected to go earlier.. Again, as was stated, you didn't pay much attention to the draft process..

I would be surprised if a safety is drafted early. We already have 2 pro bowl starters, granted Bethea's contract is up next year, but I'd much rather select a guy who can play right away rather than sitting a high pick like that on the bench and waiting to give him starter time next year IF Bethea isn't retained.To TKnight85: I ment to say FS because Matt Elam is listed as a FS just like A.Bethea, Matt Elam even though listed as a FS and has been said by one article I read that he can also play close to the line like a SS so he can do both, he's more athletic than Antwan Bethea and he can play close to the line as a SS against TE and slant receivers and stop the run past the d-line and he can play down field and help corners..... I would use him to help the corners and play the pass down field while he's young and as he ages and gains some weight he can play the SS later in his career.... He would be a great pick up in the higher second pick if they can manage a trade back, we shall see :}
Go Colts!!!!!
Go Grigson!!!!!
I look for Bethea to return back to form with Landry back there with him. Gavin brought up a good topic about how many decent FS will last late and we could possibly target one then.

Hate to say it but USC and ND aren't much to brag about, especially the last 3-4 years and it goes beyond that.
