PFF has him going to us at #3 in their most recent mock drafts.
Not a lot have mocked him to us, they compare him to Atkins/Donald
Anything is possible, but I don't see this happening at all.
One thing I like about PFF is they make people look at things from a different angle. Sometimes they throw things like this out there to see what people think about it.
Hurst is an excellent player, but I don't think he is a 3-down lineman (YET), so I would not take him that high. He could grow into a larger role, but right now he is an excellent pass rushing, 3-technique defensive lineman. He will have to WOW everyone like Solomon Thomas did last year if he wants to get drafted in the same area Solomon did.
Hurst needs to get bigger to play on first down.

Okay....you have to select 5 of these choices. We'll tally them up at the end of the draft.
An offensive lineman is chosen before Bradley Chubb is selected
Bradley Chubb lasts until at least slot #6
Baker Mayfield is one of the top 2 QB's taken
Colts trade down and select an offensive lineman and snag a 1st rounder next year
Colts trade down and get a starter player in trade
Mike McGlinchey makes it out of the top 12
Vita Vea makes it inside the top 12
Arden Key is selected before Bradley Chubb
An offensive lineman is chosen before Bradley Chubb is selected - Not going to happen
Bradley Chubb lasts until at least slot #6 - Slightly possible with QB's going high
Baker Mayfield is one of the top 2 QB's taken - I do not see that happening
Colts trade down and select an offensive lineman and snag a 1st rounder next year - Possible
Colts trade down and get a starter player in trade - Possible
Mike McGlinchey makes it out of the top 12 - Slight possibility
Vita Vea makes it inside the top 12 - Becoming a possibility
Arden Key is selected before Bradley Chubb - Only if Chubb gets arrested or shows up to the draft with a blunt in his mouth
-------------------------------------------------
Vea has been moving up the boards. Would not surprise me if he passes Hurst by draft time. I think in the end they will both be drafted anywhere from 10 - 20 overall.

love already stated that hes returning to play senior year.
I posted the thread you are quoting a couple weeks ago. Long before Love made it known he would return to Stanford.
Love returning surpised a lot of people, including those who closely follow the Cardinal.

Who is we? I would actually respect Ballard more with not taking Barkley that high and I think there are more of us on that side of the fence than the "take Barkley" side.
Difference of opinion.

I want some discussion reguarding actually taking someone at #3. Trading back draft day is a possibility, but let’s assume we don’t. When you answer, I encourage you to say why. Thanks!
No doubt, it is Barkley!
It is becoming clearer every day. Barring something ridiculous happening, he is our guy.
If we passed on Barkley then we would need to seriously doubt Chris Ballard's ability to be a GM. I don't think we have that problem though.
-
Kind of curious what @NewColtsFan thinks of Love's decision to stay in school. He has a better eye on Stanford than most of us.
For the record, I almost always (99%) of the time, approve of players staying in school. Got to get that education! Football doesn't last forever.

Trevor Lawrence is going to be very good. The arm strength and accuracy is incredible for that age...as is that hair.
Clemson might just roll with him as a true freshman. With that returning defense, they could still be in it at the end.

I saw that....super disappointing. I really like his running style. He's one of my favorites out of the draft eligible backs this year.
It was sort of surprising. I had not heard anything leading up to the deadline that he was staying. It does make sense though. This draft is top heavy with talent at running back. I had him and Ronald Jones pretty close to each other, and they're similar backs. Jones is a little bigger. I had them both slated in the late first round to early second area, and it was going to be interesting. Not sure what the supply and demand will be there, and one of them could have fallen. It's possibly that Bryce was also informed of this, and maybe it helped him make a decision to stay in school.

The deadline for all college players (or 3-years removed from high school) to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft was yesterday, January 15.
The NFL is supposed release this information, and make these declarations official by the 19th. However, with social media, we get an early jump on these things.
Take a look at Clemson's front seven. Everyone is coming back. They are going to be unreal. They might even start a true freshman, Trevor Lawrence, at quarterback. We'll need to keep an eye on this cat over the next 3 years. He could be a heck of a player.
Austin Bryant, EDGE, Clemson
Clelin Ferrell, EDGE, Clemson
Christian Wilkins, INT-DL, Clemson
Kendall Joseph, LB, ClemsonMark Fields, CB, Clemson

Barring Marcus Davenport walking the drafts red carpet with a blunt in his mouth, he is going to be off the board in the top 40. Bet your house on it.

I don't feel that even Ballard is set on who he's going to draft yet.
You've got the Combine and Pro days still left to go plus there is no idea what's going to happen on draft day and what kind of trade offers you might get offered.
Honestly one would be a fool to have already decided at this point.
It's going to be a question what he rates higher. Barkley, Chubb, Nelson, or whatever trade offers he gets on draft day.
I think they're prepared for most situations, especially the most logical.
Darnold and Rosen will go off the board quickly, and the Colts will have the rest of the field.
Doesn't take even take a nights sleep at a Holiday Inn to figure this much out.
You are correct, in that we still have the combine and Pro Days, and so on. However, when Barkley runs a 4.3 then it will only solidify his position.
I have been at this draft game for a very long time (over 30 years), and the first 3 picks have never been this clear, especially this early on. That said, trades can change things. It is possible that free agency makes a small impact. Even the bizarre is possible. Rosen could go out on an all-night bender, and do or say something stupid, and become the next YouTube celebrity. Aliens could break their silence and start communicating. Anything is possible.
Barring something drastic, I do not see this changing:
1. Sam Darnold
2. Josh Rosen
3. Saquon Barkley
Mason Rudolph is the real dark horse. That cat is the real deal, and he might cause a fuss at #3. We will have to do a gut check, and ask if it's worth losing Barkley, to move down and gain a couple of extra picks.

What if, The Browns Take Barkley with the 1st overall, and due to the situation in NY the Giants don't want to further alienate Eli by drafting a QB with the #2 pick, and they select Bradley Chubb.......who do the Colts take and why?
Do we go safety for the 2nd year in a row?
Do we grab an O-Line prospect? (I hope not)
Do we reach at ILB, or some other position?
Yeah this is a no-brainer.
We would auction the pick to the highest bidder, and kiss our championship rings later.

As we have seen in recent drafts, a lot of movement happens early in the draft.
The page below provides a visual for every teams selections, and it totals the value of each pick to create an overall Draft Power number for each team. It also totals how many picks each team has, and when each teams first pick is.
Houston and Kansas City are paying the price this year, for moving up last year. Neither team has a first round pick or any Draft Power.

Why is most assuming that Barkley gets past the Giants? Right now the Giants need a RB more than they need a QB.
I think Eli will be a Jaguar next season.

That would go against everything Ballard said in the season ending press conference. He said they were not focused on an offensive or defensive minded coach.
Has something changed?

I agree. Unless Bradley Chubb tests off the charts, I don't see how they could go in another direction. Almost everyone has Barkely as the best, or one of the two three players in the entire draft.
Agreed. Been mulling it over for a bit, and barring some bizarre event, I do not see how anyone could let Barkley slip past them. This isn't some product of the system back. He is the real deal.
-
The only thing I am unsure of is IF we keep the pick. Depends on if a 3rd QB is in high enough demand. Maybe a team falls in love with Mason Rudolph, Josh Allen, or Baker Mayfield and makes us an offer we cannot refuse.
Deep down, I think we are keeping the pick, and I think Barkley is already our guy.
I think we need to prepare for a backfield with Andrew Luck and Saquon Barkley. Could be a lot of fun watching those two work together.

People are probably thinking about Mr. irsays comment when he mentioned the colts would get a special kind of player in the first round. However lets not forget that our GM after last years Draft fired pretty much all of the scouts that were under grigs. That being said, with this new staff we have i just don't see Ballard hiring them to just stand back and applaud without doing there part. No i believe that he hired them to find the right pieces and the best possible choices to pick at 3
I believe the chances are much higher that we do trade down.
Scouts are not only looking at where we are picking. We have a big board, and we'll move where we think the value is.
Look at last year when Malik fell to us. There was very little chance we were trading that pick.
Scroll down to the part about Indy.

My first goal would be to move back.
If I can stay in the top 10 then I would select Mike McGlinchey. or Quenton Nelson. I have not made my mind up yet between those two.
If we stay at #3 then:
Barkley is an interesting prospect, and Jim Irsay is right about getting Andrew Luck an Edgerrin James type of back. This is probably the only chance we will have to draft a caliber back like this. I would not be upset.
We need a pass rush so Chubb is also another good choice.
Both Fitz and James are dynamite players, but I would rather move back and see who falls.
If we don't take Barkley in the first then I hope we take a hard look at Ronald Jones (should he happen to be there) early in the second.

BlueShoe for new head coach, he will lead us to the Super Bowl! @BlueShoe, What would be your tactics to get us there?
I would matriculate the ball down the field!
I would make it a focal point to spend 2 of our top 4 picks on the offensive line, every single year. Then go BPA with the rest of the picks.
That's my CB!

Agreed. This is exactly why Pagano kept referring to him as a 20-year old.
His skills did not keep him out of the lineup. His immaturity did.
