The kid makes plays.  He has since his 1st training camp.

he has made more from his limited playing time than others with much more time on the field.  Remember from day 1 in camp he , as an undrafted rookie, outshined number 1 pick Dorsett.

Yeah he might be a keeper. :D

  3. We just need a win. This team needs a win!

I just want to know what it feels like (again) after a win.

We have lost 6 games in a row (and I think there was a bye week in that losing streak). That's like half a damn season without a win.

When the Lord was handing out wins in 2017, we thought he said hymns, and got in the wrong damn line.

No passes either, but others will put up the same investment in OL.  I'd put up the same problem with our drafting of WRs, nobody to complement TY.

Me thinks we will be drafting LBs this spring.

    I agree.

In my mind, a GM must put the majority of his resources into protecting the quarterback and hitting the opposing quarterback. I wouldn't blame Ballard if he spent every pick for the next 3 seasons on drafting nothing but offensive linemen and pass rushers. If we can block for Andrew and frustrate the opposing quarterback then we will win a lot of games.

That might seem a little extreme, but it is true, nonetheless.

I guess the draft after Werner I see as the need to give Werner a chance.  If you draft another EDGE high after you drafted Werner, then you're giving up on Werner.  Maybe we should have, but I can see the logic in not investing back to back high draft picks, especially when the other OLB is more of a SAM and not a rusher.

ILB we have never drafted very highly, and Angerer was a Tampa 2 guy to begin with.

I liked Angerer, and even met him once. He was excited about playing in the 3-4, and I think he would have played inside well (a lot better than others following him).

I don't believe you ever stop looking for EDGE rushers. Look at Denver. They have Von Miller, and they're still drafting pass rushers. That's why they play great defense.

I am not going to give the Colts front office(s) any passes on this. They have failed.

  6. 36 minutes ago, DougDew said:

We had Mathis at EDGE for a lot of those years so the need for a high draft pick wasn't there, and recent drafts really haven't aligned talent with our draft position.

But as far as ILB, I don't think we know what we're doing.

I cannot give the Colts a pass because of Robert Mathis. He was getting old in 2010, and we needed to replace both him and Freeney. Mathis had a couple of good years left, but we needed to find replacements. Everybody on the boards knew it. We have failed to replace either of them, and we have had 7 years to accomplish the task.

I don't think the Colts have had any idea what to do at linebacker, ever since Clay Matthews was taken out from underneath us.

  7. Having a great quarterback (and protecting him) is the most important ingredient to being successful. The next best ingredient is to apply pressure on the opposing quarterback.

The tables below really puts things into perspective.

Inside linebackers the Colts have drafted over the past 7 years:

    http://footballdungeon.com/indianapolis-colts/

Year OVR RD Player Position College Rank
    2017 161 5 Anthony Walker Jr. ILB Northwestern 141
    2016 125 4 Antonio Morrison ILB Florida 129
    2015 207 6 Amarlo Herrera ILB Georgia 260
    2014 203 6 Andrew Jackson ILB Western Kentucky 194
    2010 63 2 Pat Angerer ILB Iowa 101

Edge rushers the Colts have drafted over the past 7 years:

Year OVR RD Player Position College Rank
    2017 80 3 Tarell Basham EDGE Ohio 76
    2016 239 7 Trevor Bates EDGE Maine 298
    2014 166 5 Jonathan Newsome EDGE Ball State 170
    2013 24 1 Bjoern Werner EDGE Florida State 25
    2012 214 7 Tim Fugger EDGE Vanderbilt 255
    2010 31 1 Jerry Hughes EDGE TCU 35

We traded away the only player we actually hit on (Jerry Hughes).

It's too soon to know much about Anthony Walker or Tarell Basham, but our last 7 years of drafting linebackers is absolutely horrid!

I tried to bring this up on another forum but the dialogue had disintegrated into a personal feud. So......I am bringing it up here.

The Colts have a weakness no one talks about: the second TE slot. Doyle is rock solid; the current backups are scrubs. Swoope may be an exception to the scrub label; he has some talent but is still unproven as a blocker, has a bad knee, and is still very green. And our new player, Ross Travis, gives one some hope, but he has very, very little on his resume.

Having a talented pass catching TE that can block as Doyle's opposite would be a huge bonus for this team. It could certainly give the offense a bounce.

I'd like to see the Colts draft a TE in the mid rounds that matches this description. To my knowledge, the team hasn't spent a pick here since they took Fleener and Allen in Grigson's first year. Time to prioritize this position again.

I will not only check your thoughts but raise them, sir!

    Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State

He has been on my radar ever since his 2016 season. I think he will be a great pro, and I would love for us to take him in the second or third round, if we can trade our top pick for some extras, then it would make it easier to draft him. He might be available mid-to-late second, or early in the third.

It's early, and a lot of people don't really even know how good he is yet, because there is so much firepower in his offense. His stock could soar or he might be that diamond some team grabs in the third or fourth round.

A talking head over at ESPN claims to have a source revealing the Browns love Josh Allen, comparing him to Favre.

It's likely six QBs (Darnold, Rosen, Rudolph, Mayfield, Allen and Jackson) go in the 1st, so even if Darnold returns another's stock will rise.

I might be in the minority but I think it's possible the Browns select Barkley #1 overall, opting for a QB (Allen) a few picks later.

That's interesting. Cleveland taking Barkley at #1 would shock me.

They can stay put and probably get Darnold and Barkley.

Let’s wait and see who declares. I’m still not sold Darnold will declare. Let’s also wait and see how the draft picks shake out. If we end up 2nd it will change everything as just about any trade scenerio imaginable will be a possibility. Also I am watching Buffalo very carefully. 17/24/future 1st  is a likely scenario for them to move up in the top 5 and land their guy. Also free agency might change everything. If some of these teams get free agent qbs it will be impossible to tell who is in the market to trade. As of now let’s focus on the 3rd pick as if we keep it. It’s an interesting theory you have and may play out I agree but so many moving parts as of right now it’s pointless to speculate.

ps...don’t sleep on Lamar Jackson...if he has some good pro day/combine throwing his speed and athleticism is off the charts. Teams that felt they missed on Watson might want to take a second look at him.

    Thanks.

Speculation is what being a fan is all about! :)

Strap on tight everyone, because this is going to be fun.

  11. POSTED DECEMBER 29, 2017

Before the 2017 college football season started, I had seriously pondered the thought of quarterbacks going first, second, and third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Keep in mind, I did not read this anywhere. These are my thoughts. I don't need some NFL wannabe journalist to tell me how to think. I am more than capable of watching players and determining with my own eyes with my (over 33-years) experience, as an avid NFL fan and NFL draft wannabe guru. :D

From the start of the season to near the end now, nothing has changed with these top college quarterbacks to make me think otherwise. Could it? Sure! A lot can still happen. If Darnold and Rosen both enter the 2018 NFL Draft then I believe the top 3 picks will all be quarterbacks. I believe it will be far too tempting for the Colts not to trade back from number three.

That bodes well for us. Let's look at the teams needing a quarterback, and also having the Draft Power to move up and trade with us.

    http://footballdungeon.com/2017/12/draft-power-2018/

Team Draft Picks First Pick Selections Draft Power

    Cleveland Browns 12 1 1, 4, 33, 37, 64, 65, 97, 123, 129, 153, 161, 193 6,720
    New York Giants 7 2 2, 34, 66, 98, 130, 162, 194 3,611
    Indianapolis Colts 7 3 3, 35, 67, 99, 131, 163, 195 3,189
    New York Jets 7 7 7, 38, 52, 73, 104, 147, 166 2,769
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7 5 5, 36, 69, 100, 133, 164, 190 2,666
    Buffalo Bills 8 17 17, 25, 48, 60, 96, 114, 145, 186 2,623
    Denver Broncos 9 6 6, 41, 72, 103, 105, 134, 151, 169, 200 2,597
    San Francisco 49ers 9 8 8, 56, 70, 71, 126, 135, 167, 198, 217 2,342
    Cincinnati Bengals 6 10 10, 44, 75, 106, 140, 171 2,116

Cleveland and the Giants (presuming they lose Sunday) will both draft quarterbacks. I am absolutely 100% positive that both of those choices will be quarterbacks. If Darnold and Rosen both enter the draft then we can press very hard with that pencil.

Mark it down folks, there will be a team who falls in love with Mason Rudolph and/or Josh Allen. Baker Mayfield is another interesting cat to look out for. And it really doesn't stop there. I like Riley Ferguson and Jarrett Stidham, and the list goes on, and so on. Riley and Jarrett, both share similar paths with taking some time off from football so there will be questions to answer, but the talent is there. I think they should both stay another year. However, they could enter the draft and have huge careers, falling to successful teams (like Dan Marino did).

    Rank Player College HT WT
    1 Sam Darnold USC 6'4" 225
    2 Josh Rosen UCLA 6'3" 210
    8 Mason Rudolph Oklahoma State 6'4" 235
    14 Josh Allen Wyoming 6'5" 230
    25 Baker Mayfield Oklahoma 6'0" 210

The team with the fourth most firepower in the 2018 NFL draft is currently the New York Jets. The Buffalo Bills have the sixth most firepower in the draft, and I think they might not want the Jets to gain a franchise quarterback while they sit back and watch. The Bills first pick is at #17, so they would likely have to move up twice, but they have the firepower to do it.

The Broncos need a franchise quarterback and have more than enough firepower to make a deal with us. Don't sleep on the Bengals trying to move up either, because they are in striking distance.

I am sure I will change my mind several times over the course of this great upcoming off-season, and a lot of that will be determined by what the future brings. We still must play week 17 of the 2017 NFL season, and we don't know which quarterbacks are entering the 2018 NFL draft yet. If the quarterbacks come, then the Colts can build from it!

Relax, it was just an example!!! I am just leaving it up to the ones who invest months of their time to determine BPA. :)

I am certain some of us will be upset, some will be happy, as always!!!

I agree with you. Fitzpatrick would have probably been the top corner in this draft, had he not been forced to play safety. If we took him then I wouldn't lose any sleep. I would prefer that we trade back and pick up some additional picks though. I am nearly in love with the idea of trading back with the Jets.
