If the colts trade back its going to take more than three picks to do it.

Why do you think it would take more than the 6th, 37th, and 49th?

Receiving the 6th, 37th, and 49th (for the 3rd) is already more than the norm.

    3rd = 2,200

    6th = 1,600

    37th = 530

    49th = 410

    ----------------

    6th, 37th, and 49th = 2,540

In this hypothetical trade, the Colts already get an extra 340 points, which is equal to a second round pick (57th overall).

As you can see, a surcharge is already built-in to the mock trade, so I am not sure why anyone would say "If the colts trade back its going to take more than three picks to do it." Your response is certainly something I am willing to entertain in discussion, but not something I am willing to take at face value.

A bidding war is always possible. However, according to the mock, the Broncos would already be out of the bidding as they would have a quarterback. It would be other teams bidding with the Jets.

How far are we willing to move back (a question for the Colts front office)? I doubt they want to move back very far. The Jets have the 6th pick, and that's not too far to move. Therefore, it makes sense to charge the Jets a little extra, and then make the deal with them.

Zierlein doesnt have Arden Key going in the first round.  I would be surprised if he falls to the second.  Ive read one article that Key may have some character concerns, but do not know the details.  Based on talent alone, id love to get him in the 2nd.

He will probably be there for us in the second, and we will probably pass on him.

Loads of talent..... But you can't teach "want to".

  3. In this mock, the board plays out as follows….

With the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns select Sam Darnold, Quarterback, USC.

The New York Giants have traded the second selection of the 2018 NFL draft to the Denver Broncos. With the second pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select Josh Allen, Quarterback, Wyoming.

The Indianapolis Colts have traded the third selection of the 2018 NFL draft to the New York Jets. With the third pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select Josh Rosen, Quarterback, UCLA.

With the fourth pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Saquon Barkley, Running Back, Penn State.

With the fifth pick in the 2018 NFL Draft the New York Giants select Bradley Chubb, Defensive End, NC State.

    ………………………………………………………………..

The Colts acquire the Jets selections (6th, 37th, and 49th) for the 3rd overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Colts now have 9 total picks, as follows (compensatory picks will change some of the draft order).

With the sixth pick in the 2018 NFL Draft the Indianapolis Colts select Quenton Nelson, Guard, Notre Dame.

6: Quenton Nelson, Guard, Notre Dame

36: Sam Hubbard, Defensive End, Ohio State

37: Tyrell Crosby, Offensive Tackle, Oregon

    49: Malik Jefferson, Linebacker, Texas

67: DaeSean Hamilton, Wide Receiver, Penn State

100: Dorance Armstrong Jr, Defensive End, Kansas

131: Bo Scarbrough, Running Back, Alabama

164: Allen Lazard, Wide Receiver, Iowa State

195: Chris Worley, Linebacker, Ohio State

I doubt the NFL is putting a 4-12 football team on opening night.

Sorry guys, but we have to earn our way back into the inner circle. :D

I saw your list.    I was very impressed with your work.   I always am.   And when I saw that you had Leonard as a first round pick I knew you wouldn't be comfortable with my post.

You may be right on Leonard.   It's too early in the process for me to have a good feel.    But for whatever it's worth, in my nearly six years here this is the first time I've advocated using a 3rd round pick on an ILB.    All the other years I've recommended using 4s and 5s.   So I do recognize the need to address it.

I'm hopeful we can collect more Day 2 picks and focus on building a great defense.

Oh, one last thought...   Okereke went back to school, so you can remove his name.   But when you make your list of OLBs, you can add Peter Kalambayi.   He'll be a nice free agent pickup for someone and spend a redshirt year on the Practice Squad.

Thank you for the kind words. I will move Bobby Okereke to 2019. Still cleaning some things up from the players who stayed in school. I probably have a couple more to move to 2019. The waters can get kind of muddy on who decided to return for a fifth year due to a redshirt season, especially the UDFA players.

I usually have a few stragglers to figure out until around mid-February. Most are easy, because they get invited to the East West Shrine, NFLPA Bowl, and the Senior Bowl. I started with 1200 players in April of 2017, I am currently sitting at 830 players, and I've probably verified the status on about 80% of them.

I have Peter Kalambayi listed as EDGE player for now. At 6'3" 247, he has the size but we will see how he moves. It was easy to track his intentions, because he was invited to the NFLPA Bowl. :D

I did not have any issues with your post at all. :) I agree that it is early in the process. Typically I completely agree about not drafting the off-ball linebackers early too. I don't usually have them ranked so high. The rankings could  drastically change over the next few months, or it could end up being an extremely good year for off-ball linebackers.

Your second sentence.    On most drafts I wouldn't use a top-40 pick on an ILB, unless I had most of a very good defense already in place and a good ILB is perhaps the last missing piece to the puzzle.

This is my personal view...   I'm not quoting someone else here.    I realize it's not going to be popular with many here.

But ILBs often come off the field for extra corners and safeties...   so I don't like using a top-40 pick on a guy who doesn't play a high percentage of snaps.

Again, I know there's going to be some push back and disagreement here.    It's just my view....

I think your position is sound in a typical year.

Not sure what to think about these off-ball linebackers this year though. It's early so I do not want to get ahead of myself. However, this draft seems to have a lot more high end talent from off-ball linebacker positions.

I don't typically have 4 off-ball linebackers projected in the first round. There is usually 1 or maybe 2. There have been several years where I have had 0 off-ball linebackers ranked in the top 20. This year, I have 2 ranked in the top 15, and 3 ranked in the top 25.

Like I said, it is early, and my rankings could prove to be a little over-zealous. If I had to pick a side right now though, I would bet on these of-ball linebackers getting drafted much higher than we are used to.

  7. @krunk

Is it just me or does it seem like the off-ball linebackers are extremely good this year?

I have them ranked a lot higher than I usually do. I cannot remember having 4 first round worthy off-ball linebackers. I am sure it has happened before, but I would have to go back and look at all my notes to confirm.

23 off-ball linebackers were chosen last year, and that is about how many I have draft-able this year. However, this year it seems I have them ranked much higher than usual. Eh, maybe it's early and it will balance itself out. But, it is something I am paying close attention to.

Below is my (January) ranking of off-ball linebackers. I think a few could easily move up too. Jefferson, DeLuca, Griffin, and Kiser are good examples.

For the time being I am considering Nwosu, and a few others that played on the edge as off-ball linebackers, but obviously the drafting team could see it differently.

    Tremaine Edmunds 1st
    Roquan Smith 1st
    Rashaan Evans 1st
    Darius Leonard 1st
    Leighton Vander Esch 2nd
    Uchenna Nwosu 2nd
    Malik Jefferson 2nd
    Travin Howard 3rd
    Dorian O'Daniel 3rd
    Tegray Scales 3rd
    Nick DeLuca 4th
    Jerome Baker 4th
    Andrew Motuapuaka 4th
    Josey Jewell 4th
    Micah Kiser 4th
    Shaquem Griffin 5th
    Christian Sam 6th
    Chris Worley 6th
    Matthew Thomas 6th
    Mike McCray 6th
    Fred Warner 7th
    Jason Cabinda 7th
    Leon Jacobs 7th
    Keishawn Bierria 7th
    Azeem Victor 7-FA
    Skai Moore 7-FA
    Jack Cichy UDFA
    Shaun Dion Hamilton UDFA

I don't think we are going to trade out of the spot anyway.   They made it known up front in last years draft they wanted to trade back and they didn't even do it until like the 4th round if my memory serves me right.   I think they'd have to offer an absolute haul to get Ballard to trade out of that spot.   It's either going to be Barkley or Chubb and you know what my opinion is.    Chubb

I have said it for a while now and still believe quarterbacks are going 1, 2, and 3.

I think Elway is trading up with the Giants to grab Josh Allen, and the Jets are trading up with us to get Josh Rosen.

I the end, I think the first 3 picks will look like this:

    1. Browns - Sam Darnold

    2. Broncos - Josh Allen

    3. Jets - Josh Rosen.

We will likely pick up the Jets 2nd and 3rd to move back to 6.

I don’t think anyone thought Hooker was going to be available in the first or Wilson in the second. They were both fantastic values at the time so I’m sure he weighed that with a trade down. I think I remember seeing a picture showing Hooker was like 4th on our board at the time.

This is the picture you are referring to.

If Barkley is a dud and the lack of extra picks leaves gaping holes on the team, then the Colts would look pretty stupid passing on a trade down scenario and still not having any pass rush.

To the bolded, that's just called bad drafting. Of course if the first round pick and all other picks obtained from a trade down don't pan out the Colts would look stupid. But so would 31 other teams in the same scenario.

I agree. Thought it was built into my point. Maybe you’re just agreeing with me though. :)

That’s why I believe this is a career defining decision. It’s a tough choice.

Career defining decision?  I highly doubt that. No GM is keeping or losing his job over one player hitting or missing.

Look, I understand your man love for Barkley but the Colts world does not end if they don't get him.

Your attempts to keep making this about me is noticeable. I am sure many others see it too.

Chris Ballard’s decision with the 3rd pick in this draft will absolutely be career defining.

I'd much rather trade back with say Denver or the Jets, get additional high 2nds, and 3rds, and get Bradley Chubb in this scenario.

I think it will all depend on how much Ballard likes Saquon Barkley.

On paper it's a great idea to pick up Chubb and the extra picks. However, if Chubb is a dud and the extra picks don't pan out either, then the Colts would look pretty stupid passing on Barkley.

Same thing if he chooses Barkley, and hindsight says taking the deal would have been better.

It's a very tough decision for Chris Ballard to make. It's a career defining decision.

  13. You guys crack me up.

Small school kid comes to the Senior Bowl, and it takes him time to figure out the speed, with a higher level of competition. Who would have thought that a gifted athlete might actually have to adjust to better techniques than he is used to seeing?

Behold, look what he does on Day 3. LOL

Davenport is going to skyrocket during this draft process.

If you guys don't see a young JPP in Davenport, then we are absolutely not watching football the same way.

So by your reasoning if the Colts don't take Barkley this franchise is doomed?  The coin flips both ways.

Look, no one is saying Barkley is by no means not a great RB and may very well turn out that way but at this point the Colts need a pass rusher or two more than it needs a RB. It's not rocket science.

If McDaniels is named the head coach and brings the Patriots philosophy with him they have always used a RB by committee.

One thing the Pats were missing this season was that one pass rusher needed to get them in position for the playoffs. What did they do? They signed James Harrison and the dividends paid off immediately. Now look where they are at.

Figured one of you would take my comment completely out of context.

I am going to make this very simple for you and everyone else. I do not think our front office stupid. They are intelligent, and understand football. That is why they will take Barkley, unless we get a very good offer to move back.

Noooooo, no, no, no. I can't imagine that anyone would think he's better than Chubb.

I haven't watched enough players to start thinking about who belongs in the first round, but Davenport doesn't look like a first rounder, to me. He also doesn't have the kind of elite production that I would want to see from a mid-major guy if I were putting him in the first round.

Watch JPP in college. Then put Davenport’s tape on. Then you’ll see it.
