I have been a big fan of the NFL for a good few years now but never entered into fantasy based on lack of opportunity and fear of the unknown, but I am now lucky enough to get in a UK based fantasy league where there are prizes up for grabs in a 12 team league.

I think my general NFL knowledge is fairly strong, especially for a Brit, but I am looking for some general advice on how to draft as I know it's a different craft. I have done a fair bit of research, so happy with the basics but any additional advice is more than welcome.

I did my first ever mock draft today (practice makes perfect right?!) and thought I would share my results and look for feedback, again a 12 team standard draft:

    QB: Rivers, Dalton

    RB: Mixon, Lewis, Breida

WR: A Brown, K Allen, J Brown (Bal)

    Flex: Diggs, C Davis

    TE: J Graham, G Kittle

    Def: Chargers

    K: Vinatieri

Only need one QB and I’d wait till later in the draft. Rivers is a good fantasy QB, I wouldn’t draft Dalton. He can be a waiver wire pick up if needed.

Only need 1TE and unless your going to go early for Gronk, Kelce, or Ertz I’d wait until later to get one. Seriously, there is the top 3 and then everyone else. But I personally wait until later.

For the first 5 or 6 rounds at least, I’d go RB and WR. You can alternate or tack two back to back, just depends on who is available, but stack up on RB and WR early and often.

Wait on defense and kicker until the last couple rounds. Especially in a 12 team league, you will need all the skill position players you can get your hands on. It’ll get pretty thin pretty quick.

Edit- forgot to mention that drafting is important and should get you a good base. But you absolutely gotta use the waiver wire and pick up the players who are trending up. You are guaranteed to draft someone that either gets injured or isn’t living up to his draft potential. The waiver wire, especially in a 12 team league is important. Defenses and kickers can be dropped and added each week to play your match ups.

Single gap defense where each defender is responsible for his gap (contingent upon personnel, etc.).  A lot of the run-stopping responsibilities ultimately fall upon the WLB, a critical position in this defense.

The ends are definitely pass rushers, but when it comes to the running game, they're going to play assignment football.

Thanks. Do you know if they are supposed to close down the line on down blocks or are they always responsible for the edge? Or is it just dependent on what play is called?

I’ve been trying to pay special attention to our Ends and I was just asking so  that I could put it together with what I was seeing on the field. Honestly, I’ve been watching Hunt a lot and I haven’t  been impressed, but maybe it’s my lack of understanding of what he is supposed to be doing.

  3. This is may be a dumb question, but what is the responsibilities for our DE’s in this defense? Is it to play run or pass first? And do both DE’s have the same responsibilities or is the strong side supposed to set the edge and weak side rush? Will Sheard and Hunt switch sides depending on where the TE is or is one always the right DE and one the left DE?

Also, if the tackle/TE they are lined up over down blocks, are they suppose to close down the line or still keep the edge/ contain?

    Thanks

    Kelly or Autry take #10

really not that impressive and outside of Luck, Hilton and Nelson, it’s kind of a crap shoot.

I forgot Vinny. He probably is one of the top ten

Since we've been talking about the state of our roster and how close we are, I'm curious what people think about what we have right now. I think we need 10-12 very good to great players before we can say we're ready to be a true contender.

So, assuming everyone is 100% healthy, and assume the young players who have flashed in preseason are as good as they've shown so far, who would you put in the Colts top 10?

    Luck, Hilton, Doyle, Castonzo, Nelson

    Hooker, Geathers, Simon, Sheard

I just want to say that IMO Supe you have always been a great poster but man over the last year or two you seems to have taken it to another level.  I enjoy and learn more from your posts than just about anyone else.

I don't know what you do for a living but you should seriously approach the Colts about doing an "Inside the NFL" type show for the Colts.  I know I would tune in weekly.

I agree with you about Superman’s posts. They are always excellent reads.

But don’t sell yourself short, I always enjoy yours as well and have learned quite a bit from reading your posts. I don’t post much, but I read the forum daily and it doesn’t take long to figure which posters know what they are talking about and which ones don’t. There are some other posters I enjoy reading on here, but you and Superman are two of the best.

Sure, would you be open to witnessing the randomization? I can email a link to the league owners to GoToMeeting or Google Hangouts or something.

I might be able to set aside some time this Friday night, the 24th, around 7pm or 8pm to do it.

I sure would, and I would appreciate it. If it’s not a big deal to anyone else then you don’t have to do it. I’m not trying to be a pain!

Right. Not gonna blame a receiver that wasn't even targeted on the play.

Agreed. It was a bad decision and he tried to force something that wasn’t there. I’ve watched the play a couple times now and it looks like Doyle was out of bounds anyway. He should of threw it away and took a FG.  Oh well it’s preseason and I’d rather it happen now as opposed to a regular season game.

I honestly do not think Luck Interception was on him near as much as it was on the RB.  Luck waited for the RB to come to the end of the route then threw the back to a place he could get it easily if the RB had turned around rather than loittered for a moment.  Instead, the RB seemed lost, and the CB was able to get  the easy pick.

Luck said he was trying to hit Doyle but just made a bad throw.

From what I've heard the Eagles really like Nate Sudfeld. I think Ballard tried to steal him from their practice squad too, but they activated him in order to prevent him from being snatched.

How would you know this? Serious question not being sarcastic.

We play the Bengals week 4 of the preseason and then again to start the season.

I wonder what they were thinking when they made the schedule this year?

Feels like we had this same topic a couple of weeks ago.

    Ahh thats why.
