A follow up…. Can you remember the last time — if ever — Ballard went out and signed free agents in March, only to turn around and cut those same free agents in September?
I appreciate you’re not a fan of either Davis or Bryan, but they weren’t signed to vet minimum contracts. They were signed to decent contracts with signing bonuses. And now they’re going to get cut in September? I’m having a hard time seeing that.
It would appear the Colts have a plan, but now you think they might blow up their own plan. You're thoughts?
I think we just don't remember the ones that get released because they don't last long. Examples(not sure they fit the contract part)...
2021
Colts signed Sean Davis(S) on April 1 and they released him on August 31.
Same year - Colts re-signed Joey Hunt on March 29 and he was released him on August 31.
2022
Colts signed Armani Watts(S) on April 5 and released him on August 30.
Same year - Colts sign Brandon King(LB) on April 12, he was released on August 30.
2023
Colts re-signed Khalid Kareem on March 27. He was released on August 29.
So yeah... it happens more often than you think. We just don't remember them.

No doubt. It could also mean that BTJ's issue is more concerning than Nabers. Or not, know way of knowing without having the medicals and someone to decipher and contextualize them for me.
With DJ's mock, I think what's more likely is that his choices are flavored by what he's hearing + a desire to pair certain players with certain teams. Nothing he has stands out as weird or unreasonable (he has Latu as the 4th edge, by the way), but I think Bowers to the Colts is just what people think is fun, and BTJ to the Bills just makes sense. So he puts Rome at #10, and then no more WRs until BTJ at #28, which seems unlikely to me, and kind of forced. Then again, a month ago having BTJ at #28 seemed normal, so who knows.
If Rome is there at 9 and the Bears are willing to trade back would you give them our 3d rounder this year for it?

He still has Nabers at 6 though...
One is much better and you might be willing to overlook it for one of them while you might have lower risk tolerance for the other one? My guess...

I would need to get more info. If that's the indication from medicals, then I think I'd be okay with it. I don't know anything, though. It's probably a team by team thing, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Colts are more conservative than other teams when it comes to shoulder injuries...
I had not brought it up here until today but I saw a few mocks, including Jeremiah, who IMO is one of the most plugged in people in draft land, having him drop to the late 20s... so... I thought this might be one of the reasons why he might drop.

I'm not necessarily worried about it. The medical will be important for him and for Nabers, who I believe has the same situation. They might wind up having an operation after the draft.
From what I heard, they are talking about having surgery after his rookie year. I guess it's not too serious if he can play a whole season through it with minimal risk?

@VikingsFanInChennai who do you want for the Vikings? If you had your choice of the 3 - Maye, Daniels, McCarthy? Who do you pick?

Any worries about rumored shoulder issue?

I did not vote, as I really don't have a favorite. I guess whoever the Vikings draft will be my favorite, especially if we do not trade up for him.
The Vikings like Maye. I would be okay with him or Daniels or McCarthy.
Experts love McCarthy. Many Vikings fans do too. Why don't Colts fan think highly of McCarthy?
I knew I had a favorite last year, but I thought I would be good with whoever the Colts picked... and this was until the odds for the Colts picking Levis hit -4000 or something of the sort about half an hour before the draft and my heart completely dropped. In a way I'm happy the odds-makers completely missed on this one... it showed me how I really felt about those players and made me even more appreciative for us drafting Richardson an hour later.
So... you would be good with any of them... but who do you REALLY want?
On your question... if I had to guess, most Colts fans haven't watched this QB draft extensively. I know I haven't. So his statistical profile doesn't scream 1st rounder so... possibly why not many people really like him. Also keep in mind that this is compared to the other 3. 2 of them have been crowned as the next big thing for a while now and the third one won the Heismann with some exceptional performaces throughout the year.

I will post a few mock drafts from people who are really highly ranked in The Huddle Reports' mock draft competitions over the last few years:
Brendan Donahue(tied for highest score over the last 5 years)
https://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/analysis/2024-nfl-mock-draft-brendan-donahue/
Interesting things:
-Vikings trade up to 5 for McCarthy
-Colts get Brock Bowers at 15.
Eddie Brown(tied for highest score over the last 5 years)
Interesting things:
- JC Latham at 5 to the Chargers(Jeremiah has the same pick)
- Rome Odunze to the Giants at 6, Nabers to Atlanta at 8
- Philly trades up to 12 for Quinyon Mitchell
- Colts get Brock Bowers(seems to be a trend...)
David P. Woods(3d highest score over the last 5 years):
https://www.thescore.com/nfl/news/2900023
Interesting things:
- Vikings trade up to 5 for McCarthy(seems like this is the current divide - this pick will be either Latham to the Chargers or Vikings trade up)
- Odunze to Giants at 6!!! Nabers to Atlanta at 8. Second one with those specific picks.
- Colts get Quinyon Mitchell
Ben Standig (3 times Huddle report mock draft champion!):
https://www.benstandig.com/post/ben-standig-s-2024-nfl-mock-draft-final
Interesting things:
- Vikings trade up to 5 for McCarthy
- Colts TRADE UP to 8 for Odunze!! Interesting....
Sean Green(Last year's Huddle report mock draft co-champion):
https://www.sportsgamblingpodcast.com/2024/04/23/2024-nfl-mock-draft-sean-green-final-mock-draft/
Interesting things:
- Nabers goes 4 to Arizona, MHJ 6 to Giants
- Chargers go Taliese Fuaga at 5.
- Colts get Quinyon Mitchell

Personally…. I’m hoping and praying you’re wrong. I don’t even think Murphy is a Ballard type of player. He’s not tall or long or rangy or athletic. He’s a 6’1” 300 pound ball of muscle. I’m not saying he’s not a good player, he is. But CB has never drafted or signed a player with that body type or athletic background.
Is it possible the Colts draft Murphy? Yes. I’m just hoping it doesn’t happen. I’d be scratching my head forever. Just my two cents.
Murphy IMO is not a Ballard type only on one count really - he's not long enough. He's short and squaty... he's bit like Grady Jarrett. But I disagree that he's not rangy or athletic. He's really athletic and really explosive for his size... but yeah... if I had to bet... I would bet against us drafting him.

Daniel Jeremiah has 5 QBs get taken off the board before us and having us land Bowers at 15. Jeremiah is not to sleep on, he can be very accurate with his inside information.
I was waiting for his mock today. Some interesting picks but nothing quite as exciting as him predicting the Texans trade up to 3 and them getting Stroud and Anderson. The most interesting one is him giving JC Latham to the Chargers at 5. I expect them to get an OT but I thought it would be Alt. Lets see...
Another interesting thing - Brian Thomas Jr drops all the way to 28 to the Bills. There has been some rumors about him having a shoulder issue that would need to be addressed surgically at some point. Possible he falls. Latu falls to 27 too... I guess health related again.
Worthy and Mitchell go 31 and 32 to the 49ers and the Chiefs... Urgh!

Matt Waldman who was dead on with his analysis of Josh Downs last year, listed
Xavier Worthy as the 4th best WR in this class and a franchise level receiver.
- He Notes that Worthy can be a small slot because of his toughness.
- He also lists Worthy as having elite caliber elusiveness. So he is not just fast, he can make people miss and is very adept at avoiding contact.
- He lists Comps as Isaac Bruce & Desean Jackson.
"Worthy makes a lot of difficult catches. His tracking with his back to the ball is up there with Rome Odunze. His weight falls in the range of Isaac Bruce and DeSean Jackson and like those, his toughness at the catch point belies his size. He’s fearless and wins targets that bigger receivers lose at the boundary, over the middle, and against hard contact."
Agree with a lot of this... Sometimes I even wish he would be less physical and make a few more business decisions, like TY used to make. Because Worthy would regularly try to run over people or gain extra yards with the knowledge he will suffer a hard hit and he still does it. There are some very ugly reps where he gets thrown around by defenders like a ragdoll, because he didn't slide down or go out of bounds and I can't help but think... he should probably have spared himself that one.

Since after I posted my bold prediction in our no. 15 pick thread and got tons of replies on it, I decided to post a separate thread where we all unload our unpopular takes/bold predictions/hot takes about the draft tomorrow. So ... here we go...
Here's mine:
- Chargers take Joe Alt at 5 and this an avalanche of OT picks and trade ups for OTs
- Colts trade back in the 1st and take Xavier Worthy
- Not sure this fits... but... only 4 QBs go in R1.
- At least 8 OTs go in R1
,,,
Might add other ones as we go...

Who do you think that is?
Second bold prediction - we trade back with another team coming up for an OT...

ESPN Graziano:
"Trades from the teens into the top five or top 10 for quarterbacks are fun to discuss, but they're tough to execute because of the expense associated with such deals. The people I talk to think we're likely to see more trades in the second half of the first round than in the first half. The Colts (No. 15), Jaguars (No. 17), Rams (No. 19) and Eagles (No. 22) are all teams I've heard have been making calls about potentially moving up."
I honestly will not believe this until I see it happen. Or unless it's super cheap... like... if it cost a 3d to move from 15 to 9 for Odunze or Nabers(if he falls), or if it cost a 4th to move from 15 to... 11? for someone like Bowers? But again... I just don't think it happens.

Top 5 money for any position is getting pretty expensive though. Those teams are paying it because of their SB window now, compared to what Pittman got.
I think St. Brown is better WR than Pittman too... another reason he's getting paid more.

Amon-Ra St.Brown just got 4/120M deal... highest paid WR in the league. WRs are highly sought out and highly paid! What would this mean for Aiyuk, Lamb, JJ? They are going to break the market. IMO this is another reason you should be looking at the draft to get your high end WRs,

Regardless of Ballard's talk about the current CB room, I think he's still taking a CB in 1st round
The talk + lack of a player who fits all his criteria, makes me think we don't take CB in R1... and possibly at all... followed with probably adding some vet presence in FA after the draft.

Whatever his health scare was I wish him quick recovery. Jim is far from a perfect person and far from a perfect owner, but his heart seems to be in the right place and the love and support this fanbase is showing him(which is not the norm in the league) is an indication that for the most part the fans consider him a good owner of the franchise.
Colts have the 15th pick in the draft. (MERGE)

Short arms... extensive injury history. I don't think he fits what Ballard likes...
