Regardless of Ballard's talk about the current CB room, I think he's still taking a CB in 1st round

The talk + lack of a player who fits all his criteria, makes me think we don't take CB in R1... and possibly at all... followed with probably adding some vet presence in FA after the draft.

  2. Whatever his health scare was I wish him quick recovery. Jim is far from a perfect person and far from a perfect owner, but his heart seems to be in the right place and the love and support this fanbase is showing him(which is not the norm in the league) is an indication that for the most part the fans consider him a good owner of the franchise.

There're a couple of things that seems off about this to me.

    1) The Colts moving up in the 1st.

    2) Moving up for a CB after Ballard just spent the pre-draft presser complementing the CB group.

Yeah... I don't buy it... BUT... if there is someone you might have to take seriously about something like that... it's Jeremiah. Remember how he absolutely killed that last mock with predicting the exact trade and exact picks for the Texans? Lets see if he has similarly good sources on the Colts...

I was wondering what happened to you. I think you did a good job defending yourself. You should not let others take away your love of football or of this site.

Hopefully I will see some of your posts on the draft.

Agreed. Chloe is missed and I hope she returns for the draft. We all love the Colts and football and there is room under the sun for variety of opinions without people being rude to eachother. I know people are passionate about their opinions and things can get heated once in a while, but it's good to remember at the end of the day we are all fans of the same game/team and we want the best for that team.

Wow. Maybe I just got used to it...

Yah... well... you probably caught it on one of its last days on my profile. I usually put "my guy" in the draft as a profile pick during draft season and then change it to my favorite Colts pick after the draft. I guess the hope is still alive that I keep it for a while? :P

Are there players that you feel are getting too much hype?

    Who are your sleepers?

    @Defjamz26@w87r .   @stitches  @John Hammonds  Anyone else...

Too much hype... hm... I'm not sure about too much hype but I think a lot of people are glossing over the pressure-to-sack thing about Jayden Daniels. He's Will Levis levels bad at it. I think Dallas Turner is overrated if we are talking about him going top 10(no. 8 to Atlanta)...

No idea what the situation with Latu's medicals is... but I can't believe he's not a consensus top EDGE in this draft. He's so damn good technically...

My personal sleeper I think is Malik Washington, WR, Virginia. I think he's massively underrated. IMO he has day 2 talent and you rarely if ever hear about him. Who else... I haven't really gone too deep into this draft to have deep sleepers. I like someone like Jalyx Hunt at EDGE... I like Pearsall at WR, but people are projecting him at R2 so... not too underrated.

    Question….

Why does it have to be specific to anyone this year?   Why can’t it just be a general rule that CB tries to follow?   A core value, if you will.

Because both Byron Murphy and numerous OL that could be there for us at 15 have the talent to be that "great player you don't miss on even if you don't have the need" in this specific draft. This doesn't mean it's not a core value... we are just talking about this specific draft so we are looking for players who might fit that description and surprise us...

I get it that you don't like when people here try to read stuff into what Ballard is saying, but again... just let people have fun with it. It's not that serious. That's part of the appeal of discussions like this - trying to read the mind of the decisionmakers of your team before the draft, guessing what they might do... what they would never do.

You know what... we've been getting pretty good at it actually. Last year for example, in Dr.T's contest... there were numerous people who did extremely well... talking about guessing 4-5 picks right. Do you know how hard that is? Out of 1000+ players in the draft to guess about 40-50% of your team's picks? And this is without any inside information... just following your team and knowing their tendencies and yes... sometimes reading stuff into what they say and applying apparent core principles they have to the specific draft.

I think I'd have to, right?

Third round comp pick value is above $20m/year now, so we know we're not getting that if Kelly walks in free agency. I think JPJ can play on Day 1, and we have backup quality guys in Pinter (assuming he's healthy) and French. I can use that pick (84 or 87) right now. And I'm freeing up $12m in 2024 cap, and can use a third of that to go sign my favorite free agent lineman after the draft.

More likely, the very best we could get for Kelly would be a late 5th, in which case I don't feel compelled to accept.

What if Dallas asks you to take on that 2024 salary for the 3d?

  9. For whatever it's worth... Matt Miller said on Mina Kimes' podcast that he's hearing the Colts might take Worthy as the 4th WR in the draft. Said he's hearing "we need speed, we need speed" from the Colts. The thing is... Brian Thomas fits that description too... and so does AD Mitchell...

I doubt it. I'm not against it, but it's not likely, IMO. And I think OL depth will be important, so I'd probably rather keep him anyway, unless someone is making an amazing offer for him.

Colts get Powers-Johnson in R2 and you get a call from the Cowboys or Steelers asking for Ryan Kelly. They are offering #87(#84) for Kelly. Do you take it? What if it's not pick in the 80s(3d) but rather 119(PIT's 4th)?

He's put the retirement rumors to rest, at least to my satisfaction. I wouldn't expect him to rock the boat either way, and it wouldn't change my draft strategy at all. I was just thinking out loud, especially since he commented on his contract situation the other day.

I must have missed that. What did he say about his contract?

Edit: I just saw it. Yeah... he seems like he wants to keep playing. Scratch that doubt in my previous post. Well... yeah. I guess... whatever Ballard decides, I'd be OK with it I think. BTW... is it possible we draft a new guy early(day 2) and we trade Kelly? Any contender needing a C?

  12. 1 minute ago, Superman said:

I agree, it's Ballard's responsibility to find Kelly's successor, and the fact that everyone else has been re-upped except for him is probably a concern of his. You can expect that concern to multiply significantly if we draft a center early.

Should we care? Maybe... if you have someone throwing off the vibes, it could be problematic, and issues like this can snowball. Not that it would stop me from drafting anyone, but they should be prepared for whatever happens next.

The way I feel about it is - if the rumors about him considering retirement are true... maybe he will be OK with it and be a good mentor to the new guy in his final year and the Colts can give him a warm send off into retirement after the season. If he wants to keep playing... it will serve as motivation to show other teams that he still has it and they can give him another big contract. He doesn't strike me as a guy who will make huge problems or be malcontent of any sort. He might be disappointed, but I don't see that as a reason to not draft a guy we really like and think can be our center of the next 5-10 years...

Let's say the Colts take Jackson Powers-Johnson in the second round, does Ryan Kelly cause trouble?

The real question is... should we care if he does(in the long-term that is)? This is his last year under contract and he will be 32 by the start of the 2025 season... Ballard is absolutely within his rights to prepare the team with Kelly's successor, especially if we are feeling like we need to budget the expenses on the OL with impending contract for Raimann...

By my count there are 17 WRs on this chart.   Unless one of them has a serious health issue I’d expect all of these 17 to go in the first two days of the draft.  And maybe 2-3 more as well.  All in the first 3 rounds.

Yeah, there are a lot of good WRs in this draft... I think even Ballard said in his presser he thinks WR is pretty deep this year.

Not that it will matter in the end, but a number of scouts and front office personnel were upset with this approach. In the Athletic's GM and Coaches polling Harrison received half the votes as the best receiver in the draft. The other half voted for either Nabers or Odunze

I hope the half that like Odunze or Nabers more are all drafting ahead of us... might create some opportunities for us.

Not really have specific player.  MHJ.     Some of the more talked about players. etc      Harrison didn't do the combine but wasnt sure about a pro day.   Just curious

Yah, MHJ didn't test at any point during the off-season. He pretty much said after the season that he will be preparing for real football rather than underwear olympics and that he thinks his career is better served this way and if teams have questions about his athleticism they can watch his tape.

Is RAS established from the combine?    There are a lot of players I would have expected to be on there that are not. I assume they are not there because they didn't work out???

I don't know much about this stuff

It's from the combine and verified pro day numbers if there are missing combine numbers. You need to have some number of tests and measurements in order to have a RAS score so maybe the players you assumed would be there didn't test...

Who did you think would be there but isn't?

Who feels like paring this down even further? Arm length, height, weight, etc...

Theo Johnson is an example of someone who tests well, but his athleticism doesn't show up on tape all that much. I didn't watch a ton of him, but from what I did watch, I didn't see an explosive athlete.

Yeah, I think you can cut down the list even further, but it's a good starting point. Ballard's last few drafts have been with average RAS of 9.5 or something of the sort. (2022 - 9.63, 2023 - 9.48)

I'm not sure we can completely eliminate some players because of lack of length but we definitely can emphasize some with great length at certain positions - DL, LB, CB... Ballard has a history of drafting high arm length prospects at thsoe positions.

Cooper Dejean went to South Dakota State? Hmmmm

Huh? No... it's 2 separate tables that here show one next to the other so you see the school of the player on the row from table 1 and the name of the player on the same row from table 2. Just open the tween and see the full lists... actually ... here they are:

There aren't a lot of them to talk about. Of the handful of WR prospects in the sub 4.3 range, Henry Ruggs is probably the best player. He ran 4.27, and was doing well halfway through his second season, but we know how that ended.

The best overall player in that range is Champ Bailey, who ran 4.28 back in 1999, and had a great career. Second best is Chris Johnson, who ran a 4.24, and had a strong career as well. So being fast isn't a curse, nor is it disqualifying.

We already know that being fast doesn't make him a good player.

Tyreek Hill ran 4.29 at his pro day... No idea what Waddle would have ran, he was still recovering from his injury that he returned to play in the playoffs with. Possible he runs somewhere in that range too?

The problem is... there really aren't that many players who have ran so fast so the sample is not big.

If we expand to other positions... you mentioned Champ Bailey and Chris Johnson. Tariq Woolen ran 4.26... which for his size is quite possibly the most impressive run of all of them.
