  1. Interesting mock today.  Chad Reuter of NFL.com just did a mock and had the Colts picking McCaffrey with the 14th. pick.  He had three QB's going before our pick and Cook dropping to the Bucs at 19 due to injury concerns and previous off field issues.  I really like McCaffrey anyway so I thought this was an interesting mock. And I think it's possible three QB's could actually go before our pick.  We shall see.

  2. I do like your mock with the exception of Mixon.  What I would prefer is acquiring either Ingram or Perry in FA in place of one of your two FA's.  If that happens I would take Mccaffrey with pick 23 which is where a lot of mocks have him going in the back half of the 1st. rd.  Then you wouldn't need two ER in the 1st. rd.  Again all predicated on signing either Ingram or Perry.  Like the trades.

  3. The Jaguars just decided not to pick up the option on 27 yr. old starting LT Kelvin Beachum by 4PM today.  If they picked it up he would have been under their control for 4yrs.  The option was for 35.5M with 13M guaranteed.  He now becomes a FA.  Not sure if he can sign with a new team right away or if he has to wait for FA to start.   With so many people talking about moving AC to RT and finding a new LT maybe this is worth investigating?  Thoughts.

What do you assume contenders mean? That puts us in the playoffs and makes us a contender for the SB? Obviously the question by the OP meant are we SB contenders. Also, if we made the playoffs Vs the Pats or Steelers, would you bet a significant amount of money on the Colts?

Contenders means contenders for the SB.  That's pretty obvious.  When you make the playoffs you are automatically a contender for the SB the teams that don't lost their opportunity to win a SB.  Pretty straightforward I would say.  You seem hung up on the willingness to bet a significant amount of money on the Colts as a way to prove your point.  That's your measure of proof. I don't gamble so if that makes you happy so be it.  I guess you win the argument then.  Pretty silly reasoning IMO.

Answer me honestly, would you bet real money that the Colts could beat the Pats or Steelers? Something that could affect your pocketbook? The Raiders are a problem too with Carr back. I think we can win the division, but a new GM by himself won't make us contenders, he still has to fix the team and hit on a lot of new players, which it seems you are assuming is a given.

The question was are we contenders not are we going to win the SB?  You think we can win the division.  I guess that puts us in the playoffs and yes that makes us a contender.  Any team that makes the playoffs is a contender IMO.

  6. Sign the man!   A great guard entering his prime and he's young.  If he hits FA he should be a top target for us along with Ingram if he hits FA.  CB said it starts in the trenches and this guy is the perfect road grader. People are getting hung up on how much to pay him.  You want to pay less for a lesser talent because he might cost one or two million more.  Really?  In the NFL a few million is peanuts when you have the cap space we have to get a great player.  We need some great players.  Difference makers. It isn't going to happen going cheap. I don't mind if he gets paid a lot.  Somebody is going to pay him and I hope it's us and he's the first of a couple of blue chip FA's we sign.

  7. I have seen mocks of him being taken at the top half and bottom half of the first rd. not to mention second as well.  He is also an excellent punt and kickoff returner.  I think his stock will probably rise at the combine and based on his showing he could move ahead of Cook on some boards.  He has the potential to be one of those day 1 surprises come draft day and go early.  In any event I think he would be a great weapon for Luck if he were to become a Colt.

Yeah I think Cook is highly likely to go higher than McKinley. But it's comparing apples and oranges when you talk about BPA. I'd prefer to ask 'Who will make the biggest impact for us as a team?'.

Don't get me wrong, Cook is great, really good prospect. I like him as much as Elliot last year. Although, since we have Gore under contract and he has given us no reason to believe his production is going to stop next year, it doesn't make sense to me to take another RB when we are so desperately thin not just at OLB but at LB in general.

There will always be a sexy, offensive skill position player there when we pick. But if we keep taking them because they're the BPA, we risk a Polian-esque neglect of the defense.

McCaffrey intrigues me. I think he's a player that gives you a lot of options as an OC. You can line him up at RB, use him on those zone runs. Split him out wide to run routes. Run him in motion. Use him in the screen game from the backfield or from the WR position. Even use him on sweeps. And size wise he's not far off the same size as Wayne Gallman. I'd like to see him go to someone like SF with Kyle Shanahan who knows how to utilise a RB like him.

He's never going to be your workhorse 25 carry RB. But I think he could be a 20 TOUCH player. He's a guy the defense is going to need to account for whenever he's on the field. He's someone who will spark an offense, in much the same way as Darren Sproles does. If he's there in the 2nd I'd take him, depending on who else is there.

McCaffrey intrigues me as well.  An NFL network writer posted an article predicting the five most impactful players from this years draft class.  They were Garret, Adams, Williams, Foster and McCaffrey.  He can also handle punt and kickoff returns.  I have also seen him mocked in the top half and bottom half of the 1st. round.   He might really improve his stock at the combine.

Desmond King has potential to be a great FS. From everything I've read he's also a great teammate and an extremely hard worker. I'd rather have Buddha Baker or Eddie Jackson though.

Budda Baker in the 2nd. would be an awesome pick.  He just might not last that long.

This draft is deep in defense across the board. I was reading yesterday (wish I had the link) that capable GMs will be able to find defensive starters as late as the 5th round. That could bode well for teams like the Colts that will desperately need rookies to step up and produce on that side of the ball.

Sort of suggests taking Cook in the 1st. if he's there.  Also trading back in the 1st. and taking McCaffrey and getting an extra 2nd.  Then loading up on defense and maybe finding starters in the 2nd. and 3rd. rounds.

As I write this it has to be OLB for me. Simply because the cupboard is bare. Before resignings, we have Akeem Ayers and Curt Maggitt. On their best days, they are role players, at most. Erik Walden needs resigning. He's not going to light the world on fire as a pass rusher. He's not an elite edge defender anymore, although he is still decent against the run and can hold up in the passing game. Unless we boss FA and bring in at least 1 quality OLB starter, for me there is no other choice if McKinley is available.

But it all depends on what happens between now and draft night. If for some Ballard decides on an 'out with the old and in with the new' approach and cuts Gore; Takes Vontae's, likely Pagano's and the fans advice and brings in someone like Melvin Ingram (along with resigning Walden, although he might end up a casualty of the 'out with the old...' business). Then I can absolutely see him picking up Dalvin. And after a brief 15 second blinding rage, I'll be fine with that. I'd say a few things need to happen before I'd be happy taking Dalvin at #14/#15.

It comes down to the fact that it is easier to find a quality RB in rounds 2-4 than it is to find a quality pass rusher.

If Gore is cut this is a list of RBs in the draft that would be instant starting quality RBs IMO, along with their round projections:

    Fournette (early rd1)

    Cook (early-mid rd1)                  Tier 1

    McCaffrey (early rd2)

    Kamara (mid-late rd2)

    Foreman (early rd3)                   Tier 2

    Hunt (mid rd3)

    Clement (late 3 - early 4)           Tier 3

Conclusion: Talent to be had in 2nd tier. 3rd tier are backups/change of pace backs. Note. I did not include Joe Mixon because with his character stuff I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole.

The instant impact starting quality OLBs:

    Garrett (should be no.1)

Thomas (likely top 10 on draft night)

    McKinley (top 20)

    Harris (top 25)                              Tier 1

Barnett (late rd1, trending down due to lack of athleticism)

    Smoot (late rd1)

Watt (early rd2 and rising)         Tier 2

Conclusion: A lot of talent flying off the board early and a significant drop off after the 1st tier. 2nd tier starting still in the first round. Note. I did not include Tim Williams due to his apparent drug issues which takes him out of consideration for our first 3 rounds IMO.

Nice analysis.  According to your rankings Cook is ahead of Mckinley and Harris.  If Garett and Thomas and Fournette go early Cook would be BPA at 14 with Mckinley being the closest.

^^ Just realized you were abbreviating Edge Rusher... Since I never advocated specifically for edge rusher and given your previous comments about knocking teeth out (I believe that was you if not sorry), ER just didn't click.  My bad... Apologies.

... Although since you bring it up it will be much easier to find good RBs than good defense/edge rushers in later rounds and/or future drafts.

No big deal and no apologies needed.  I have to think through the abbreviations too.  Just to let you know I wasn't the poster talking about knocking teeth out.  Pretty hard to keep everybody straight with all the volume on this board.

Let's not parade Chris Ballard around as a hero just yet. This move isn't earth shattering. It's an obvious move anyone who had control of the Colts this off season would have made.

    Yes, that includes Grigson.

However, I am happy with that decision.

If he cuts Gore, I'll probably cry.

I totally agree.  This move is so obvious any new GM or Grigson would have done it.  Making Ballard out to be a genius for this move is a little over the top.  All this tells me is that he has evaluated the roster and more moves are now to be expected.  This and Jones are the easy ones.  It's the possible moves after those two which are going to be interesting;  Cole, Gore, Robinson, Adams( not resigning), Reitz, McNary, Butler, Morrison to name a few.

I believe him when he says it starts in the trenches, and that D wins championships.

And the majority was fine with the Kelly pick, because it was a humongous need and also a great talent.

And I see more people not wanting a rb, than people that do.

I also believe defense wins championships and I also believe him when he says it starts in the trenches. That is why I can see him acquiring a G or T or NT in FA.  ER is not the trenches unless you consider a DE an ER.  Most people are clamoring for a standup OLB as our ER in a 3-4.   The majority was not fine with Kelly as a potential 1st. rd. pick.  The majority wanted defense.  They eventually warmed up to him when the draft got closer and Polian rated him the top 4 prospect in the draft.  I see more people warming to RB than you do.  A lot more than I would have thought considering so many want to draft defense.   I agree with an earlier post that it all depends on FA.  The discussion only gets better after FA.  And quite honestly I can see Ballard taking an OL with the pick too.  I don't think he's taking anything off the table.  It al depends on what he does in FA IMO.
